his finest.

W: It’s priced at 180 pounds.
M: That’s a bit more than I can afford right now.
W: Let me see if I can do anything about the price sir. We are selling these paintings to raise funds for a local

moment to speak with a curator about a possible discount.

【原文】W: A new trend is gaining momentum across China: the 24-hour library. These well-lit havens provide a
shelter for students, professionals and anyone in need of a quiet place to read or study in the late hours. In addition
to staying open 24 hours a day and featuring a wide variety of books, these libraries are equipped with
comprehensive study facilities, including water, electricity, power outlets and restrooms. Some even offer beverage
service and dining options. For Ye, a 25-year-old from Weihai, east China’s Shandong province, the local 24-hour
library is an invaluable resource as she is preparing for the civil service exam. Employed full time, she finds that
traditional library hours do not meet her study needs. According to a national reading survey, the average Chinese
adult read 4.75 physical books and 3.4 e-books in 2023. As of the end of 2023 China boasted 3246 public libraries
with a total collection of 1.44 billion books, marking a 5.6% increase from 2022. People’s longing for public
cultural spaces like museums and libraries reflects the continuous improvement of spiritual and cultural pursuits of
our country.

【答案】参考范文
While walking together in the rain, he told me his story. Once he had dreamed of being a policeman, but he
had his left leg badly broken in an accident, which ruined his dream. Tough as the life was, he didn’t lose heart but
turned to find another new job. Worse still, his present work was demanding and did not suit for his leg, but he said
that every outing was a wonderful start to him. Enlightened by the man’s remarks, a decision like a green bud
slowly emerged from my mind.
Then, I decided to return to school and earn money to support my family while studying. I applied to the
school for continuing my study. Being permitted, I went back to school to pursue my childhood dream, during
which I found a part-time job to cover the basic living expenses. Efforts paid off, at last I was admitted into a
university, and afterwards I found a job, because of which my family’s situation became better and better. Looking
back, what I realized is that when we run out of the rainy season of our life, there will be bright sky ahead of us.英语试题

As I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his high school team, I was starting to feel sorry for myself
and for him. His team was facing adversity on the court and he was playing in a hostile environment — it was the
opponents’ home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan’s team was trailing (落后) for three quarters (节) of
the game. As for me, I had been fired from my job earlier in the day.
During my drive home, I kept telling myself that I would find work again in a short time — I am confident in
my experience and abilities. This is the same belief as I always try to teach my son.
The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still trailing. I saw the determination on his
face, as well as his teammates’ faces as they fought back to not only tie with the other team, but then go ahead by
three points. Then, a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to tie the score again. With the game in
a tie and few seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball. With skill and confidence, he proceeded to
make a basket with a defender hanging his hands all over him. The defender was warned for a foul (犯规).
As Nathan stood at the free-throw line preparing for a shot that would make his team one point ahead, I saw
the determination on his face again. There was no room for self-doubt. Nathan was able to tune out all the
distractions and nail the free throw with such skill. It was as if he had done it a thousand times.
As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride. It dawned on me that I had taught him perseverance in the face of
adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself
was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He would play in the finals, but it didn’t matter if
he would win or lose. At this moment, we both won.
24. Why did the author feel sorry
A. He had made a big mistake in his work.
B. He used to be too busy to accompany Nathan.
C. Nathan’s team was too weak to compete in the game.
D. He and Nathan were both going through a hard time.
25. Which of the following words can best describe the author
A. Self-centred and pessimistic. B. Self-confident and optimistic.
C. Hard-working and intelligent. D. Easy-going and warm-hearted.
26. What does the underlined phrase “tune out” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Ignore. B. Focus. C. Create. D. Receive.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Father and Son in Life B. A Lesson in Life and Basketball
C. It Matters Whether to Win or Lose D. Life Goes Just like Playing Basketball
C
Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few
pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective,” says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an
exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in
our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as
much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of
weight gain that you think it is.”
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to
improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change
your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat —
your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks
and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too
excited — it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight,
and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in
mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
28. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2
A. Your weight changes little during a day.
B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
29. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months
A. You will weigh more. B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body fat will increase. D. Your body composition will change.
30. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds. C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Why Do We Gain Weight
B. How to Work Out Effectively
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain
D
The number of snow geese arriving in the Arctic each spring to breed has risen over the past few decades. At
first, wildlife biologists saw this as an environmental crisis, pointing to marshes (沼泽地) where plants were eaten
by the hungry birds, and the federal government responded by loosening restrictions on snow goose hunting across
the country. But how do the Inuit (因纽特人), in whose backyard this is taking place, and for whom fresh goose
eggs and meat are among the pleasure of an Arctic spring, view the situation A recent study is bringing Inuit
wildlife experts and scientists together to look for common ground on managing the species.
The snow goose study asked experts in Coral Harbour and Arviat, on the north and west coast of Hudson Bay,
to share their generations of knowledge about snow geese and their views on what should be done. “The
community had concerns about controlling the population,” says Ron Ningeongan, a community officer for the
Kivalliq Inuit Association in Coral Harbour, “and Inuit snow goose knowledge had never been recorded. People
wanted to pass on what they knew.”
The Inuit experts rejected the idea of a cull (选择性宰杀 ), considering it wasteful of the geese and
un-necessary for the environment in general, but felt that hunting more geese in an organized way — for in-stance,
paying local hunters a minimum amount of money and distributing the birds to disadvantaged families or operating
a limited commercial hunt that would employ local people — would be appropriate.
The Inuit say that while there may be too many snow geese in some areas, it’s not a crisis. Biologists now
generally agree that there seem to be plenty of undamaged marshes available and newer research shows that some
damaged areas can recover.
Conservation planners for the three migratory bird reserves in the area will use the study’s recommendations,
which is an excellent example of how indigenous (土著的 ) knowledge can strengthen wildlife management
Johnson says.
“Now that we have recorded and documented Inuit knowledge of snow geese,” says Ningeongan. “when
facing the crisis again, other people will be able to use the information to help manage the species, which is
fundamental to dealing with it effectively.”
32. Why did the federal government loosen restrictions on snow goose hunting
A. To create more marshes. B. To protect ecosystem.
C. To make more profits. D. To wipe out the hungry birds.
33. Which of the following might Inuit wildlife experts agree on
A. Regarding too many snow geese as a crisis.
B. Never organizing large-scale commercial hunts.
C. Employing poor families to hunt more snow geese.
D. Using snow goose hunting to man’s best advantage.
34. What do biologists think about the marshes’ future at present
A. It’s unpredictable. B. It’s hard to get better.
C. It’s too discouraging. D. It’s a bit promising.
35. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A. The crisis. B. The species. C. Inuit knowledge. D. Inuit research.

Studies have shown that stress may affect not only your happiness but your overall health. It can lead to high
blood levels, weight gain, and it even weakens your immune (免疫的) system. Small steps can make a world of
difference. Here are a few tips to help prevent and reduce stress. 36
Reconnect with nature. Spending just 30 minutes a day in bright daylight can help to reset your body’s
natural rhythm (节奏). It also helps us to get away from the daily distractions and stressors of everyday life, such as
our phones, TV, and computers. 37 For a wonderful resource for connecting with nature, see The Outdoor
Adventurer’s Guide to Forest Bathing by Dr Hackenmiller.
Express gratitude by writing down your thoughts. 38 It can also help you wind down at the end of
each day by writing down all of your thoughts and feelings just before rest. You may find you fall asleep quicker by
having a clearer mind.
39 Whatever this involves, remember to take “me time”. This may be a 10-minute meditation (冥想),
a short walk, or a hot bath. It could also mean setting aside time to learn something new or take up a new hobby.
Find something you enjoy and put your energy into it.
Practice relaxation techniques. Breathing techniques, stretching, and meditation are all useful ways to deal
with stress. 40 Therefore, don’t be afraid to try out new techniques to find what works for you.
A. Set aside time for self-care.
B. Everyone responds differently.
C. Spend as much time as possible exercising every day.
D. From them you can determine what works best for you.
E. Stress can have a lasting effect on how you feel, think, and behave.
F. This can help you re-energize your thinking in a more positive direction.
G. A short walk outside or a relaxation moment bathed in the sunshine can work wonders.

77. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
20 years ago, my father died of an accident resulted from drinking, leaving my sick mother and two younger
brothers alone. At that time, I was in a senior high school. After my father’s funeral, the whole family was in a
worse condition than ever. As the eldest son, I had no choice but to quit school and work in a factory.
Life went on without any wonder. I dared not to ask for more, just hoping to bring up two younger brothers.
However, that was not an easy thing, for I couldn’t afford their tuition even if I worked from day to night without
stopping, and much worse, I had to take my sick mother into account. The present misery made me want to have
another try, but it seemed impractical, for I couldn’t lose this job any more.
A thread of hope sparkled in those gloomy days suddenly. It was a rainy dusk when I put myself in the rain
and walked in the street. Suddenly the rain stopped! To my bewilderment (困惑), I raised my head, and found that
“the sky” was in fact a dark blue umbrella. Then I heard a deep voice.
“Why not run without an umbrella ” A middle-aged man with one leg on crutch said to me, “If you run, you
would get less drenched.”
I shook my head, but after a second I thought: Right, why not run without an umbrella
His words shocked me deeply. Without my father, could I only be a slave to the fate, and my dream in
childhood only an illusion Life is like this. When you are in rainy days in your life, if you couldn’t find a way to
prevent you from being drenched earlier, you would have been overwhelmed by it, but if you decide to get rid of it,
you’ll discover that the rainy days last not so long as you imagined.
