Marathon pacers(马拉松配速员), sometimes also called
“rabbits”, are usually great runners. There are usually between 10 and
15 pacers in a marathon. Each of them leads a different group. They run at a
set race in their projected(预定的) time. They usually hold a sign or a
balloon with the time on it to help the runners finish the race.

There are many reasons for running with a pacer. First of all, they can
help you run at the right pace. If you go out too fast in the first half of the
race, you can run out of energy quickly and slow down in the second half.
Similarly, if you set out to run a slower first half and a faster second half,
it can be hard to follow the pace in the end because you’re very tired then.
With a pacer, you don’t have to think too hard about your pace. You just
need to keep up with your pacer.
Marathon pacers do more than that. They can inspire you to keep going
when you go through the hardest part of the race. In fact, many marathon
runners bring out the best in them by following a pacer.

It’s not easy to become a marathon pacer. You must have experience in
running marathons and be able to pace a race correctly.
( B ) 47. How many marathon pacers are there possibly in a marathon?
A. 8. B. 12. C. 16. D. 20.
( C ) 48. What can you see on a marathon pacer’s sign or a balloon?
A. The name. B. The speed.
C. The time. D. The number of pacers.
B
C

( A ) 49. In the third paragraph, what does the underlined word
“inspire” mean?
A. Encourage. B. Invite. C. Teach. D. Force.
A
( A ) 50. Running with a pacer in a marathon has the following
advantages EXCEPT “ ”.
A. You must get the first prize.
B. You can run at the right pace.
C. You don’t have to think too hard about your pace.
D. You can keep going when you go through the hardest part of the race.
A

( D ) 51. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. It tells us the looks of marathon pacers.
B. It tells us the future of marathon pacers.
C. It tells us the hobbies of marathon pacers.
D. It tells us the importance of marathon pacers.
D

C(外刊阅读)
自我同情
When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it’s easy to be hard
on yourself. With self-compassion, you can be a friend to yourself
instead.

Compassion is a strong feeling of sympathy for people who are suffering
and a desire to help them. Self-compassion is giving yourself that care and
kindness. Sometimes being kind to yourself can help when you mess up or
when you’re struggling to do something new. Dr Kristin Neff, author of
several books on the subject, lists three elements(要素) of self-
compassion: being kind to yourself, understanding that everyone
struggles sometimes and noticing your feelings.
What is self-compassion?

Self-compassion can reduce stress, build confidence and ease pain.
When you’re kind to yourself, you relax, and you’re able to think more
clearly and see a way forward. Suzy Reading is a psychologist who says self
-compassion helps you be your own friend and feel at peace. Self-
compassion enables you to forgive yourself when you make mistakes,
helping you learn and grow. Just as you would be kind to a friend who made
a mistake, self-compassion helps you to be a friend to yourself.
Why is self-compassion important?

How can you practise self-compassion?
There are many ways to be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that
everyone messes up or struggles sometimes. Notice how you’re speaking to
yourself. Talk to yourself using kind words. “Try calling yourself a pet
name and see how that helps you choose softer words,” Suzy says. “This
is important when you are having a hard time. Kind words help us find
solutions and lighten our load(负担).” Try to find out the feelings you’re
experiencing. When you are upset, you might feel angry, disappointed or
anxious. Name the feelings and tell yourself it’s OK for you to feel this way.
Think about how to take care of yourself physically, too. Give yourself a
hug, go for a walk, take a few slow and deep breaths or draw a picture.

Some years ago, our head teacher Mrs Waters decided to start a school
newspaper and get some students to do it. She thought the newspaper would
help us learn more about school life. We liked her idea.
Some of my friends joined the newspaper team soon. I had always
loved writing and drawing, so I joined the team, too. My parents were
pleased with me. They thought I was doing something meaningful. And they
often came along to give me advice.

My first job was writing a report about a sports project. It was hard for
me, because I never wrote anything like that. Dad told me it was similar
(相似的) in some ways to writing a story—getting information in the right
order. With his help, I did a good job on my report. Sometimes the team
didn’t use what I had written or drawn, but I didn’t mind. I just told myself
to do better the next time.
I’m now one of the editors(编辑). We think about what goes into the
newspaper. We also correct mistakes in people’s articles(文章). I’m busy
with these things every day, but I really enjoy doing them.

That made a difference to me

Last year, I had a really hard time learning English. I couldn’t
remember new words. One day, my English teacher, Mr Li, noticed
my problem. He came up to me and said, “Don’t worry. Learning a
language takes time. Why don’t you try making flashcards to help you
remember the words?” I followed his advice and started making
flashcards. To my surprise, it really worked! I began to remember
more words and my grades improved.

This experience taught me that asking for help is not a weakness. It
also showed me that sometimes, a small change could make a big
difference. Now, I am not afraid to ask for help when I need it, and I
have become more confident in my studies.
