Tom Hi guys! International exchange visits for teenage students are getting popular all over the world. I’m a middle school student and I am considering joining a short exchange program. Some people say exchange visits are great for teens, but others say they have many problems. I’m really not sure. Are the good sides better than the bad ones I really need your advice!
Sara I think exchange visits have clear disadvantages. First, many young students face culture shock in a new country. They feel uncomfortable with the new customs and lifestyles. Also, without parents nearby, many students feel lonely and homesick. This can even make their schoolwork worse. What’s more, exchange visits cost a lot. Most families cannot afford them.
Sam I don’t agree. The advantages are far more meaningful. Immersion in a native language environment is very useful for teenagers. You stay, study and talk with local people every day. You have to use the foreign language in real life all the time. This helps you improve foreign language skills much faster than only studying in class. First-hand cultural experience also broadens your horizons and lets you learn more about the world. At the same time, living with host families and local students makes you more independent. You can learn how to talk with others and solve small problems by yourself.
Tom
Thanks so much for your valuable advice! Now I believe exchange visits are a good experience for teenagers. There are possible challenges, but if you prepare well, you can grow a lot. I just heard an example that can show this. 15-year-old Lin Xi had a 4-month exchange in Toronto in 2024. At first, she missed home a lot and found English difficult. But later, she became more independent and learned to see the world in a new way. That’s exactly what I mean.
30. What is Tom’s main problem
A. His parents won’t let him study abroad alone.
B. He worries he is too young for exchange programs.
C. He can’t decide if he should join the exchange visit.
D. He doesn’t know how to organize an exchange program.
31. Which of the following is a possible challenge in international exchange visits
A. They can become more independent.
B. They may miss their home and parents.
C. They know nothing about local culture.
D. They must work to make much money.
32. What does the underlined word “Immersion” mean
A. Good memory of vocabulary.
B. Full use of the foreign language.
C. Quick learning in the classroom.
D. Smart ways to solve problems.
33. Why does Tom mention Lin Xi’s story
A. To tell others about his own experience.
B. To express his worry about Lin Xi’s life.
C. To show teens can grow from exchange visits.
D To explain why he gives up joining the program.

When you enter your new school, the first thing you need to do is learn the escape map well. You can find the escape map in every room. Please go over it and keep in mind the nearest emergency exit and the right way to the exit. What you should do is as follows.
◆ If you see a fire or smell smoke, don’t wait to pull the fire alarm to warn others quickly. Every room in the school has got a fire alarm. Use something hard, like a chair, to break the glass and start the alarm system. If the alarm is hard to reach or the fire is very close, move straight to the nearest exit to keep yourself safe first. In an emergency, every second matters.
◆ If you hear the fire alarm, move quickly to the nearest exit. Don’t stop to get your textbooks and notebooks. Leave your things in the classroom. Your safety is more important. The things you take with you will only slow you down. Remember to follow the arrows on the fire escape map.
◆ Don’t run and don’t use the lift! Walk quickly to the playground. Running may cause injuries and the lift will trap you if the electricity is off. Also, stay low to the ground to avoid taking in smoke.
◆ Don’t go home! Wait for your teacher to call your name and make sure that you are safe. Be careful. Don’t go back into the school buildings until a teacher has told you that it is safe.
Read the map and learn the instructions above by heart. There is little time for you to check the map when an emergency happens. Being prepared and calm is the key to staying safe in an emergency.
34. What is the first thing to do when you see a fire
A. Use a chair to break the window glass
B. Find things to make the fire alarm ring.
C. Wait patiently for others’ quick warning.
D. Go to the exit quickly with all your things.
35 How can you reach the playground safely when you hear the fire alarm in the lab
A. Run out of the lab quickly, turn right, and then turn right.
B. Run out of the lab quickly, turn right, and then turn left.
C. Walk out of the lab fast, turn right, and then turn right.
D. Walk out of the lab fast, turn right, and then turn left.
36. Which statement about the school’s escape map is True
A. You cannot find the escape map in the two offices.
B. Reading room is nearer to the exit than the art room.
C. Fire extinguishers can be found in some classrooms.
D. Calm down and check the map during an emergency.

①As we all know, “To get rich, build roads first.” A project under the China-led Belt and Road is now bringing hopes across Burera in northern Rwanda (卢旺达). For years, the beautiful scenery of this small area was hidden behind the long bumpy (颠簸的) roads. Today, built together by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and local companies in Rwanda, the smooth 63-km Base-Butaro-Kidaho (BBK) road has changed this situation.
②“In the past, reaching nearby towns was a struggle because of the bad road,” said Seth Havugimana, a 30-year-old businessman from a village in Burera. “Once it took four hours to get to the city, but now it takes only about an hour,” he said. “People can go from here to another place easily and do business. We are very happy about this new road.”
③The road has also made it easier to reach public services. “If someone in my family is sick, it is convenient to take them to the hospital,” Havugimana said. “Also, students can go to school easily. Before, it was hard.”
④The BBK road has changed more than just people’s daily life. It has also helped the economy (经济) of the whole area grow. “Where there is traffic, there are business activities,” said Thierry Kamuhanda, BBK project director. “Gas stations, coffee shops, and other shops and services follow, so there are more local jobs. Tourism will also increase, mainly because the road runs along Lake Burera.”
⑤Jing Niu, the project manager of the BBK project at CRBC, explained that it was not easy to build the first 22-km part. The difficulties included rocky hills, protecting the environment near Lake Burera, managing traffic, and keeping children safe. To solve these problems, the company worked closely with local leaders and communities to give safety lessons and keep the road open.
⑥Bruce Semana, a local worker who joined the project in 2022, spoke about the valuable skills shared by CRBC. “I joined as a young graduate with ideas but no practical skills,” he said. “Everything the workers know now—how to manage teams, work with different people, and work in poor conditions—is learned through the CRBC.”
⑦The last part of the BBK road is now mostly open to traffic, though final works are still in progress. The whole BBK project will be finished by the end of the year. It will continue changing the future of northern Rwanda.
37. How does the author start the passage
A. By asking a question. B. By using a saying.
C. By putting an advertisement. D. By telling a joke.
38. According to Thierry Kamuhanda, how does BBK project help the development of Burera
A. More Chinese tourists go travelling in Burera.
B. The project includes many shops and services.
C. New shops are built in order to improve tourism.
D. The road allows new businesses to enter the area.
39. What is the structure of the passage
A. ①/②③/④⑤/⑥⑦ B. ①/②③④/⑤⑥/⑦
C. ①②/③④⑤/⑥/⑦ D. ①②/③④/⑤⑥/⑦
40. What can we infer from the passage
A. More projects will start in the near future.
B The poor environment is the only challenge.
C. CRBC helps exchange the technology to the area.
D. Villagers could not see a doctor before the new road.

Waste sorting and recycling
Have you ever imagined that a waste-burning factory does not have enough waste to burn It sounds strange, but in some cities, this is becoming a new reality. ____41____
The main reason is the great success of waste sorting and recycling in China. People sort waste into different kinds for recycling, which cuts down the waste for burning. ____42____ For example, dry waste in Shanghai has dropped by 15% since 2019, and Beijing’s total waste collection has fallen by about 10%.
These waste-to-energy factories still play an important part in dealing with non-recyclable waste. The waste is burned at over 850°C and then gives out a large amount of heat. This heat boils water to produce high-pressure steam. The steam can drive generators (发电机). ____43____
However, these factories are not perfect in environmental protection. Burning waste still produces some harmful gases like CO , which is not good for the environment. ____44____ But in fact, they may forget the more important goals—to reduce and reuse first.
____45____ Reducing what we buy and reusing daily things are the most effective ways. The future of waste management is not just about burning. It is about a “zero waste” way where nothing is wasted.
A. The best waste is the waste we never make.
B. Some people might think burning waste is enough.
C. This produces electricity while reducing the amount of waste.
D. Let’s explore this surprising change and the science behind it.
E. Many big cities have already got great results from this green action.

D. To explain why he gives up joining the program.

35. How can you reach the playground safely when you hear the fire alarm in the lab

A More Chinese tourists go travelling in Burera.
B. The project includes many shops and services.
C. New shops are built in order to improve tourism.
D. The road allows new businesses to enter the area.
39. What is the structure of the passage
A. ①/②③/④⑤/⑥⑦ B. ①/②③④/⑤⑥/⑦
C. ①②/③④⑤/⑥/⑦ D. ①②/③④/⑤⑥/⑦
40. What can we infer from the passage
A. More projects will start in the near future.
B. The poor environment is the only challenge.

The waste is burned at over 850°C, and then gives out a large amount of heat.
