In Wuhan, many people walk to the main building of the 719 Research Institute with flowers in their hands. They come here to show their respect to Huang Xuhua, a great scientist who devoted his life to China’s shipbuilding.
Huang was born in Shanwei, Guangdong in 1926. He grew up when the country was at war, so he made up his mind to study hard to protect his motherland. In 1945, he went to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to learn shipbuilding. After finishing school in 1949, he joined the nation’s shipbuilding work at once. In 1958, Huang started to work on the top-secret “09 Project”—to build China’s first nuclear submarine (核动力潜艇). At that time, China knew almost nothing about this new technology. Huang and his team started from nothing and kept working hard. In 1988, at the age of 62, Huang even became the first designer in the world to join in the dangerous deep diving test of nuclear submarines.
Because the project was top-secret, Huang didn’t go back to see his mother for 30 years. When he finally met her in the late 1980s, his mother was nearly 90 years old, and his father had already passed away. “To be loyal (忠诚的) to the country is the best way to show my love to my parents,” Huang said in a TV interview. He won many big awards in his life, like the Medal of the Republic. In 1994, he became an academician (院士) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Some people called him the “father of China’s nuclear submarines”, but he rejected this title. “China’s nuclear submarines are the result of our team’s hard work. I just did what I should do as a Chinese,” he explained.
A Wuhan citizen came to show respect to Huang with his family. He said, “Huang’s story is very educational. We must tell our children about it and encourage them to work hard for our country.”
30. What can we know about the “09 Project” when Huang started to work on it
A. The deep diving test of the submarine was finished before 1988.
B. Huang and his team had little experience in this new technology.
C. Top technology was already widely used in Chinese shipbuilding.
D. China had developed basic nuclear submarine technology before it.
31. Why didn’t Huang Xuhua see his mother for 30 years
A. He lost touch with his family after moving to a new working city.
B. The “09 Project” was top-secret and stopped him from going home.
C. He was asked to travel around the country to take part in different tests.
D. He was too busy with the school work in Shanghai and had no free time.
32. Which of the following would Huang Xuhua most probably agree with
A. He made more achievements than the country asked.
B. The title “father of China’s nuclear submarines” is useless.
C. Loyalty to the family is more important than to the country.
D. The success of the nuclear submarine depended on the team.
33. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Spirit of China’s Nuclear Submarine Research
B. A Great Scientist Who Won Many National Awards
C. The History of China’s Nuclear Submarine Development
D. A Great Scientist of China’s Nuclear Submarine Research

In 2025, a team of scientists from China developed a new environmental tech called “Solar-Powered Algae (藻类) Mats” (SPA Mats), which has become a great achievement in cleaning polluted water. Unlike traditional water treatment (处理) methods that cost much and use lots of energy, SPA Mats use solar power to grow special algae that eat harmful things in rivers, lakes and even oceans. This technology has been tested in three Chinese cities since early 2026 and shown amazing results.
Each SPA Mat is a thin, flexible sheet that can be spread on water surfaces easily. It is covered with tiny solar panels that provide energy for the algae to grow fast. Every 1 m2 of SPA Mats can clean 120 liters of polluted water per day, and it can work for up to 18 months without being replaced. The team first tested 50 SPA Mats in a small polluted river in Hangzhou. After two months, the water quality improved greatly. Encouraged by this, they added 150 more mats in the same area. In total, these mats reduced harmful chemicals in the river by 65% and made the water clear enough for small fish to return. Local people also noticed that the bad smell from the river was gone, and more birds began to stay nearby.
However, the technology still has room for improvement. The SPA Mats work best in areas with plenty of sunlight, but they don’t work as well on cloudy days or in dark water. Also, making the mats requires special materials that are not cheap yet. Scientists are now working to optimize the technology, hoping to make the mats affordable and suitable for different weather conditions.
The team behind SPA Mats hopes to bring this technology to more countries by 2027, for it shows environmental protection and scientific development can go hand in hand. Such green tech can surely grow fast in the future, solve more water pollution problems around the world and let more people see the great power of science and nature working together.
34. Why does the writer talk about the test in Hangzhou in Paragraph 2
A. To explain how to use the SPA Mats in rivers.
B. To show where the SPA Mats were first made.
C. To tell how well the SPA Mats work in real life.
D. To compare the SPA Mats with other water cleaners.
35. Why don’t the SPA Mats work as well in some environments
A. They need plenty of sunlight to work well.
B. They need to be replaced after a short time.
C. They need much water to keep the algae alive.
D. They can only be used in small rivers in China.
36. What does the underlined word “optimize” mean in paragraph 3
A. To look for something. B. To stop using something.
C. To make something better. D. To change something totally.
37. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Scientists will soon work out all the problems of SPA Mats.
B. Traditional water treatment methods are no longer popular now.
C. SPA Mats have been widely used in many countries around the world.
D. Green tech will play a more important part in environmental protection.
