If you traveled back to ancient China 1,888 years ago, you might see a great moment in science. In the royal observatory (钦天监) of Luoyang stood a huge bronze(青铜)machine shaped like a jar (罐子). One day, without any warning, a loud “CLANG” rang out. A dragon on the west side of the machine opened its mouth and dropped a bronze ball into a toad below. No one had felt the ground shake. People laughed at the inventor, Zhang Heng. But days later, a messenger arrived with shocking news: a terrible earthquake hit Longxi, a place far to the west. ▲ .
How did this bronze machine work so well without electricity The secret was its clever design. Scientists believe it held a heavy hanging copper pillar (铜柱) called the “Duzhu”. To understand how it worked, we can look at a simple physics rule in our daily lives. Imagine standing on a fast bus, holding a heavy backpack. If the bus hits a small rock, the backpack hardly moves. But if the driver suddenly stops—like an earthquake reaching Luoyang—the bus stops quickly. The heavy backpack swings forward because of a physics rule called inertia. Zhang Heng used this rule. When earthquake waves arrived, the ground and the bronze machine shook. But the heavy hanging pillar stayed still. So, the shaking machine hit the pillar. This moved a small part, opening the dragon’s mouth, and the bronze ball dropped.
This invention was very important in ancient times. In the past, an emperor waited days for news of a disaster. Thanks to this device, however, he could now receive an early warning. Knowing the direction, the government could quickly send food and doctors, saving many lives. Sadly, the real machine was lost in wars, but Zhang Heng’s spirit of invention still inspires us today.
56. The arrival of the messenger in Paragraph 1 is ________.
A. to explain how news traveled in ancient China.
B. to prove that Zhang Heng’s machine had worked correctly.
C. to show that the earthquake was far away.
D. to describe the emperor’s reaction.
57. Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 1
A. People finally believed that Zhang Heng was right.
B. The earthquake was so strong that it destroyed many houses.
C. The machine had “heard” the earthquake before humans could feel it.
D. The messenger brought some good news as well.
58. Why did the bronze ball drop from the dragon’s mouth
A. Because the ground shook heavily in Luoyang.
B. Because the heavy pillar inside moved with the machine.
C. Because the pillar did not move when the machine shook.
D. Because people hit the machine to test it.
59. What does the underlined word “device” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Instrument B. Disaster C. Backpack D. Earthquake
60. What is the best title for the passage
A. Zhang Heng: A great inventor
B. The Bronze Ball That Fell from a Dragon’s Mouth
C. How a Bus Ride Helps Us Understand Earthquakes
D. An Ancient Invention That Saved Lives

阅读下面短文内容,回答下列小题。
A New Way to Feel Better A 2025 report from the World Health Organization shows a big problem: almost half of the people around the world who need mental (心理上的) health support can’t get it. This is mainly because many can’t afford to see a mental health doctor and there are not enough trained professionals. Now, AI chatbots (聊天机器人) are becoming a new way to help. They can talk with people about their problems at any time and cost much less than traditional ways. Doctors also think AI has its advantages. Dr. Li from Beijing Hospital says, “Chatbots can offer comfort and help with daily stress. Users often feel listened to.” This is especially helpful for those who feel lonely or stressed. However, most agree that AI cannot take the place of human doctors. They believe that real people understand our feelings much better because they have true emotions. Human doctors can talk with patients face to face and make special plans for each person. The human connection is very important for treatment. Another problem is that we can’t always trust AI’s answers. Human doctors train for many years to learn the right way to help people. AI does not have this real-world experience. So experts say our government needs to make strict rules to make sure AI is used safely and properly. In the future, AI is expected to work together with human doctors to provide better mental health care for everyone. This way, more people can get the help they need.

You should never ask others how much they are paid for their work. One safe subject to talk about is the weather. People in Britain are quite pleased to talk about the weather. And some people liked to hear good words about their dogs or cats.
When a man is walking into a room with a woman, he should always hold the door open for her. When a man is walking along the road with a lady, he should always walk near the traffic. The importance of imagination ● Imagination allows us to ____24____ with others. ● If you put yourselves in others’ shoes and understand others’ ____25____, thousands of people you’ve helped will be proud of you.
【答案】21. graduates
22. least 23. effort
24. connect
25. pain
【原文】 It’s a great honor to speak to all of you, proud graduates. Today, I want to share two things: the benefits of failure and the importance of imagination.
When I was a teen, what I feared most wasn’t hard times of studying, but failure. You might be driven by a fear of failure sometimes. But failure only takes away the least important things from you. You can still put all your effort into what are truly important to you. And you’ll never know your strength until you failed.
Imagination. Imagination not only shows humans creativity, but also helps us connect with others. Unlike any other creature, humans can understand each other without experiencing. We can put ourselves in others’ shoes. But many prefer not to use their imaginations. They stay in their comfortable place and refuse to understand others’ pain. However, being an adult means that we can help change others’ lives. If you have the ability to imagine yourself into others’ lives, then not only your family but thousands of people you’ve helped will be proud of you.
Thank you.

A. to explain how news traveled in ancient China.
B. to prove that Zhang Heng’s machine had worked correctly.
C. to show that the earthquake was far away.
D to describe the emperor’s reaction.
Disaster C. Backpack D. Earthquake

So, experts say our government needs to make strict rules to make sure AI is used safely and properly. In the future, AI is expected to work together with human doctors to provide better mental health care for everyone. This way, more people can get the help they need.
