With the development of technology, our city life is becoming more and more “smart”. Here are some great technologies that make our cities “smart”.
Sensors are like eyes in every corner of the city. They can see and feel things by collecting data (数据) on people and the environment.

One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare (敢于) not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward.
“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe.
Just then the man on the other side saw us.
“Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter ” shouted my master.
“The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller.
When we returned home the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”

Seagrass, an underwater plant that grows on the ocean floor, is very important for sea life. It also helps prevent global warming by storing carbon dioxide, a harmful gas. However, scientists don’t know exactly how much seagrass is at the bottom of the ocean. With the help of tiger sharks, a team of researchers has discovered the world’s largest seagrass meadow (grassland) on the seafloor near the Bahamas.
Seagrass meadows are home to many different kinds of fish, shellfish, and so on. Large sea animals, such as sharks, also spend a lot of time there looking for food. Seagrass can grow in very deep and dark waters, making it difficult to find. But sharks can dive deep into the water and get to the areas people cannot reach.
After noticing tiger sharks swimming through seagrass off the Bahamas, an American scientist worked with a seagrass expert, trying to map the locations of the plants. The researchers fitted seven tiger sharks with cameras. Since tiger sharks swim in groups, they placed satellite tracking tags (卫星跟踪器) on eight other sharks to find out exactly where the animals swam. They collected hours of videos of the tiger sharks swimming through seagrass.
The researchers found more seagrass growing near the Bahamas than they expected—in fact, they believe that there is more seagrass there than anywhere else on Earth. The new finding increased the total amount of seagrass known to exist by 41%. However, more research is needed to discover the true size of the seagrass meadow.
Scientists often depend on findings from divers and boats to study about the underwater world, but this team found that working with animals improved their understanding. They are now placing cameras on sea turtles to study seagrass in the Red Sea. Hopefully, more mysteries about seagrass will be solved.
33. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A. To explain how seagrass stops global warming completely.
B. To introduce the value of seagrass and a breakthrough in its study.
C. To show that scientists have fully known about seagrass distribution.
D. To compare the importance of seagrass and tiger sharks.
34. Why did the researchers choose tiger sharks to help study seagrass
A. They can reach deep areas where seagrass may grow.
B. They are the most common sea animals near the Bahamas.
C They feed mainly on seagrass and stay around it all the time.
D. They are easy to catch and fit with cameras.
35. Which of the following is TRUE about the research process
A. The researchers fitted cameras and satellite tags on the same 7 sharks.
B. The team worked with divers and boat researchers to collect data.
C. Satellite tracking tags helped locate the groups of tiger sharks.
D. The researchers spent hours swimming with tiger sharks to shoot videos.
36. What can we infer from the passage
A. The traditional way of studying underwater life is useless now.
B. The true size of the Bahamas seagrass meadow hasn’t been determined yet.
C. Sea turtles will replace tiger sharks as the main research tool in the future.
D. Seagrass in the Red Sea is more difficult to study than that near the Bahamas.
(D)
Last month, calls were made to raise the taxes for sugary drinks. This shows growing worry over the amount of sugar that kids are taking in through cola, juices and other beverages (饮料), a new study has found that one in five children did not drink any water on a given day and that those kids took in more calories from sweetened beverages than kids who did drink water.
The study surveyed 8,400 children across the country between the ages of 2 and 19. Researchers found that around 20 percent of children were reported drinking no water throughout the day. And they took in almost twice as many calories as kids who did drink some water. Overall, the children drank 132 calories of colas and other sugary beverages per day. That number dropped to 112 calories if they drank any water. But kids who didn’t drink any water at all took in an average of 210 calories from sweetened drinks.
This can cause a lot of problems. “Those calories don’t provide much nutrition (营养) and they can add up,” according to professor Asher, a scientist in public health. Sugary drinks have been linked to a number of diseases, such as childhood obesity, dental problems and high cholesterol. “I’ve seen 6-year-olds with high cholesterol and teenagers with Type 2 diabetes,” said Natalie, a doctor for children. “These are diseases we used to see in their grandparents.”
“Kids should take in water every single day, and the first beverage choice for kids should be water,” according to Natalie. “Because if they’re not drinking water, they are drinking sugar-sweetened beverages that are less healthy and have more calories.” Adults should take up their responsibility to encourage kids to drink water so that they don’t take in something less healthful. And things need to be done to ensure childhood health.
37. What can we learn about children’s water drinking from the survey
A. Each of the children took in 210 calories per day.
B. Most of the children drank enough water every day.
C. Children who drank less water would take in more calories.
D. The children who drank water took in twice as many calories.
38. How does the writer support his idea in paragraph 3
A. By showing professional views to show risks.
B. By providing survey data to prove the influence of sugary drinks.
C. By comparing health conditions between heavy and light sugary drinkers.
D. By describing the forming process of related diseases.
39. Which is a direct result for children replacing water with sugary drinks
A. Taking in less effective nutrition.
B. Gaining nutrition from extra calories.
C. Developing strong immune systems.
D. Reducing the risk of dental problems.
40. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To describe the harm of sweetened beverages.
B. To compare water with sweetened beverages.
C. To suggest some ways to help children live a healthier life.
D. To introduce the importance of water drinking among children.

John took me to the stable. Oh! What a good supper he gave me that night! What a nice bed of straw! I was glad of it, for I was tired.

C. They feed mainly on seagrass and stay around it all the time.

The study surveyed 8400 children across the country between the ages of 2 and 19.

We can plant more trees to clean the air. We should sort rubbish carefully and save water and electricity every day. We can also walk or ride bikes instead of taking cars.
Small green actions are powerful. If everyone tries their best, our world will become more beautiful. Let’s take action from now on!Thank you!
