In Chinese, we have the phrase ban men nong fu. This phrase has something to do with Lu Ban. Do you know the story behind the phrase
Lu Ban was a master carpenter in ancient China. Once, a man came to the place where Lu Ban worked. He thought he was good at using an axe and started showing off his axe-wielding skills. But he didn’t know that he was in front of the greatest expert.

One day, Lu Ban cut his finger on a leaf. He saw that the leaf had teeth on its edges. He realised that a toothed edge could make cutting easier. In the following days, Lu Ban invented the first saw in history.
Lu Ban invented many other things, such as grappling hooks and rams for fighting on boats and the “cloud ladder” for attacking walled towns.
He also helped build many bridges and palaces in the State of Lu and other states. He made a big difference in China.

The Four Great Inventions in ancient China greatly promoted the development of China and the world. Can you tell more about them Then discuss with your classmates.
Printing was invented by Bi Sheng in the Song Dynasty. He made movable clay characters. These characters could be put together to print different texts. Printing became much faster this way.
Gunpowder was invented by Chinese people during the Tang Dynasty. They mixed saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal （硝石、硫磺和木炭）by accident. At first, it was used for fireworks. Later, it was used in weapons and changed the world.
Look and say
Paper-making was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Before that, people wrote on bamboo or silk. Cai Lun thought of using tree bark, rags and fishing nets. He made them into pulp（纸浆）, dried it, and invented paper. It made writing much easier.
Compass was invented in ancient China. Ancient Chinese people made the first compass by shaping lodestone into spoons and placing them on smooth plates. It greatly helped with navigation.

Thomas Edison was a famous inventor around the world. He invented many useful things. One of them is the light bulb. Before it, people used candles at night, but his invention brought bright light to our daily life. He was really interested in electricity and new-type devices.
From Edison, we can learn to keep going. His story shows that if we are determined and work hard, we can overcome problems and do great things.

Zu Chongzhi was a famous ancient Chinese scientist. He was good at math and astronomy. His greatest achievement was calculating π very accurately. He found that π was between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. This was amazing at that time. His spirit encourages us to keep our passions and work hard.
