Laser (激光) technology is set to revolutionize space communication, potentially allowing people to have video chats with family and friends while on long space trips: SpaceX, a leading player in the space industry, is pioneering laser-based communication technology for satellites. Last October, US startup Muon Space took up SpaceX’s offer, aiming to use the technology to establish a high-speed satellite connection, as reported by tech magazine PCMag.
Laser-based communication is widely regarded as the future of space communication. According to NASA, the term “laser” stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. In a laser beam, light waves are aligned in peaks, making the beam narrow and bright — ideal for maintaining focus over long distances.
Traditionally, satellites rely on radio waves for sending and receiving information. Both laser and radio waves travel at the speed of light, but lasers can carry far more data. For instance, NASA notes that downloading a two-hour HD movie with lasers takes just eight minutes, compared to over 26 days with radio waves.
Lasers also offer enhanced security due to their thin beams, which leave smaller “footprints” This reduces the chance of signals being intercepted or disrupted by others, as stated in the national magazine. Additionally, laser equipment is lightweight and consumes less power, freeing up more space on spacecraft for scientific tools.
However, the narrow laser beam presents a significant challenge: lasers are typically targeted at satellites 500 kilometers above Earth, which move thousands of kilometers per hour. Moreover, clouds and fog can interfere with laser signals, though more ground stations in adverse (恶劣的) weather areas can mitigate this issue.
While laser communication technology has not yet been widely adopted, its market is expanding rapidly. Fortune Business Insights predicts the market could reach 29.52 billion (about 210.19 billion yuan) by 2032. Some experts even suggest that as the technology matures, it may gradually supplement radio wave communication in most space missions by 2040.
24.Which of the following best explains the working feature of a laser beam that benefits long-distance space communication
A.Light waves in it travel at a speed faster than radio waves.
B.Its light waves are aligned in peaks, making it narrow and bright.
C.It can carry more data than radio waves due to its larger footprint.
D.It consumes less power, which ensures stable transmission over distance.
25.What does the underlined word “intercepted” probably mean in paragraph 4
A.Blocked. B.Occupied. C.Provided. D.Strengthened.
26.Which measure is mentioned to address the problem of laser signal disruption by bad weather
A.Increasing the power of laser equipment on spacecraft.
B.Building more ground stations in areas with poor weather.
C.Adjusting the wavelength of laser beams to avoid interference.
D.Using heavier but more stable laser devices for communication.
27.What does the passage imply about the future of laser-based communication
A.Its market growth will slow down as the technology matures.
B.It will completely replace radio wave communication by 2040.
C.It will play an increasingly important role in space communication.
D.It will only be used in a few space missions due to technical limits.
When learning a new language, our journey begins with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Yet the deepest experience happens when language is presented through culture. The recent World Chinese Language Conference (世界汉语大会) in Beijing explained this approach clearly. By presenting language education through cultural experiences — whether through tea, calligraphy or opera — Chinese language instructors worldwide are making use of the richness of tradition to build a connection.
A central idea stressed at the conference was that Chinese characters provide a basis for understanding the cultural logic that shaped the language. At the conference, participants from different corners of the world shared how cultural interest had inspired. their language journeys. Alessandro Tosco, Italian director of the Confucius Institute in Sicily, described how Chinese opera offered him a way to understand not only the language but also its philosophical (哲学的) and emotional meanings.
The global spread of Chinese further stresses the link between culture and language. Tea serves as a historical example of this. As it traveled from Yunnan and Sichuan across the ancient Tea Horse Road, so too did Chinese words, philosophies and practices. The Chinese character “cha” developed into “chai” across Central Asia, while the Amoy dialect of Fujian province exported “te” to Europe. A single word thus carries with its centuries of exchange, reflecting both linguistic development and cultural spread. Teaching such word-origin stories not only enriches vocabulary but also develops a sense of historical and global awareness, strengthening the idea that language is closely linked to its cultural basis.
Finally, the World Chinese Language Conference showed that cultural experience is not secondary but basic to effective language teaching. Culture turns the study of a language from an educational task into a journey of understanding — a journey that, in the case of Chinese, links learners to centuries of artistic, philosophical and social tradition.
28.How do we get the deepest language experience
A.By connecting language with culture.
B.By teaching Chinese with tea culture.
C.By learning grammar and vocabulary.
D.By presenting education through culture.
29.How does Alessandro Tosco see culture’s role in language learning
A.It is the only reason for language learning.
B.It helps find philosophy in Chinese characters.
C.It helps understand language and its deep meanings.
D.It is an effective way to memorize Chinese characters.
30.Why does the author mention the word “cha” and “te”
A.To show Chinese words change with places.
B.To explain language and culture connect closely.
C.To suggest dialects matter more than Mandarin.
D.To prove trade routes drive Chinese word spread.
31.What would be the best title for the passage
A.How to Learn Chinese Effectively
B.Chinese Characters and Culture Meaning
C.The World Chinese Language Conference
D.Language Learning Links to Cultural Origins
Every year, over 14 million tons of plastic waste end up in the world’s oceans, according to the UN Environment Programme. This waste kills millions of marine animals each year, pollutes fragile coastal ecosystems, and breaks down into microplastics that enter the food chain and reach the human body. Most of this plastic comes from single-use packaging, designed for days of use but able to persist in oceans for hundreds of years. Now, scientists and startups worldwide are turning to an unlikely solution to this global crisis: fungi.
At the heart of this innovation is mycelium (菌丝体), the root-like structure of fungi. Made of tiny thread-like filaments, mycelium grows by feeding on organic matter, binding into a strong, flexible, fully biodegradable material. To make fungal packaging, manufacturers use agricultural waste (wheat straw, rice husks, sawdust) as a growth medium, mix it with mycelium spores, place it into molds, and let it grow in a controlled environment for 5-7 days. It is then heat-treated to stop growth, forming a lightweight, durable packaging made without harmful chemicals, high temperatures or massive energy input.
Unlike plastic that never fully breaks down, fungal packaging is 100% biodegradable. It decomposes in soil in 30 days, and most importantly, fully breaks down in seawater within 3-6 months, leaving no microplastics or toxic residues. This makes it an ideal replacement for plastic packaging used to transport seafood, cosmetics and electronics, major contributors to marine plastic pollution.
Major companies worldwide are adopting the technology. A Dutch startup FungiPack uses it for seafood shipping, while Chinese firm MycoGreen produces it for electronics, reporting a 70% reduction in carbon emissions compared to plastic production. It still faces challenges: higher cost than mass-produced plastic, and poor water resistance. But with ongoing optimization, it will soon become a viable alternative to most ocean-bound plastic.
“Plastic was a miracle invention, but we forgot to design materials for the end of their life,” says Dr. Jane Zhao, a Tsinghua University materials scientist. “Mycelium works with nature, not against it. That’s the future of sustainable packaging.”
32.What is the biggest advantage of fungal packaging over traditional plastic
A.It is cheaper to mass-produce B.It can be reused many times
C.It can fully degrade in seawater D.It has a longer service life in wet areas
33.What can we infer about the production of fungal packaging
A.It has a lower carbon footprint than plastic
B.It depends on high-quality farmland
C.It requires a lot of fresh water and heat
D.It is more complex than plastic production
34.What does the underlined word “viable” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Rare and valuable B.Cheap and abundant
C.Complex and advanced D.Practical and functional
35.What is Dr. Zhao’s attitude towards mycelium packaging technology
A.Neutral B.Doubtful C.Critical D.Optimistic

On a beautiful Thursday this April, Mr and Mrs Brown took their daughter Lily out for a walk in the neighborhood. On their way back, Mrs Brown picked up a doll for Lily from the local toy store — it had smooth hair and wore a pretty blue dress, just like the dolls Lily always admired in shop windows. These days, when Mr and Mrs Brown were busy with their work and spending less time at home, such small joys meant more than ever.
In the afternoon, Lily couldn’t wait to play with her new doll in the backyard. She was carefully pushing the doll in her little toy pram (推车) when suddenly, a strong wind came and blew the pram down. Before Lily could catch it, the pram hit a tree and fell over. The doll fell out and broke into pieces on the hard ground. Since the doll was made of porcelain (瓷器) and completely broken, the Browns could do nothing about it. Heartbroken, Lily collected all the pieces carefully. She found a small cardboard box and put all the broken pieces inside, then buried it under the big oak tree in their garden.
About one hour later, their neighbor Mrs White happened to pass by and saw what had happened. She came over to comfort little Lily. Seeing how sad the girl was, she really felt sorry for her. And it was at that moment that she decided to do something special for the poor child.
The next day, Mr Brown went out to get the mail as usual and found a package. It was addressed to Lily, with no sender’s name written on it. Feeling curious, he brought it inside and called his daughter. Lily carefully opened the wrapped package.

【原文】Today we will talk about sports. We know all over the world people enjoy sports. Why Maybe the most important reason is that sports help people to keep healthy and happy and to live longer. Many people like to watch others play games. They often buy tickets or turn on their TV to watch the games when they have time. And often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins or plays very well. Some sports are so interesting that almost all the people go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with a lot of rivers or lakes. Some sports or games go back more than 4,000 years ago, like running or jumping. Chinese martial arts, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. As we all know, water-skiing is one of the newest in the family of sports. People from different countries may not be able to understand each other, but after a game together, they often become good friends.

Lily’s eyes immediately lit up with excitement and joy. Inside lay a brand-new doll—not just any doll, but one even more beautiful than the broken one. Beside the doll was a small handwritten note that said: “Every beautiful doll deserves to be loved by a sweet girl like you. Always keep smiling! — From your secret friend.” Mr Brown immediately thought of their kind neighbor Mrs White, who had witnessed Lily’s sadness yesterday. A warm feeling of gratitude filled his heart as he watched his daughter happily hug her new doll.
Deeply moved by this wonderful act, Mr Brown decided to share the story online. The story quickly spread throughout the community. Many neighbors, inspired by this simple but meaningful gesture, started helping with grocery shopping for elderly neighbors, while others shared plants from their gardens. When Mrs White’s family learned what she had done, they felt incredibly proud of her. But the most valuable reward for Mrs White was seeing Lily playing happily in the garden every day, always carrying the new doll with her. This experience served as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can create waves of warmth and bring people closer together.
