My father always said that Oct.20 was the precise day when the Florida air shifted slightly with a tease of fall.
Every year on that day, he’d lay some wood in the fireplace, strike a match, and sit close to the flames as if waiting
for a season to arrive. If the temperature still remained warm, he would light incense (熏香 ) called “Campfire
Memories” to increase the mood.
His romantic gestures contrasted with the hardships he carried from earlier years — the Great Depression and
flying bombers during World War II. After law school, he rode southward on the Silver Meteor train line in search
of a place to call home. When the train stopped in Winter Haven, he stepped down to stretch his legs and was hit
with the scent (香味) of orange blossoms. He never got back on the train.
Later I was born in that small town, but when I was three, my mother died suddenly. From then on, father and
I became a pair of many things. Professor and student, storyteller and listener. As I matured, he took me on trips,
taught me manners and how to read the world. If I asked his permission to do something potentially controversial,
he always said, “I’ll tell you what I think, and then it’s up to you.”
Father died at 72 — that was nearly thirty years ago — yet sometimes he returns in my memory. Recently,
an occurrence took place at 5 a.m. on Oct.20 when I was taking a bag of trash to the wheeled bin out by the street.
Then suddenly, a wind blew in from the west and seemed to surround and envelop me for a few seconds.
Immediately, my mind went to Father. Perhaps Winter Haven felt something on schedule — Oct.20 — the day
autumn always arrived for my father.
24. What does the father’s behavior on Oct.20 show
A. His preference for cold weather. B. His deep-seated love for Florida.
第 3页/共 15页
C. His longing for seasonal changes. D. His romantic greeting of autumn.
25. Why did the father decide to settle in Winter Haven
A. He continued his further law study. B. He wanted to break away from the past.
C. He was attracted by the atmosphere. D. He was eager to seek a lifelong partner.
26. What does the author think of his father
A. Affectionate and open-minded. B. Far-sighted and strict.
C. Committed and hardworking. D. Responsible and warm-hearted.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Wind always made the author sad. B. The author loved his father deeply.
C. Autumn was the author’s favorite season. D. Oct.20 was the most important day of a year.

A subway line that links downtown Beijing with Daxing International Airport in the Chinese capital now
allows passengers to enter and exit stations by just scanning the palm of a hand, setting an example of how using
biometric data in public transportation can make commuting more convenient.
The pilot program was launched on Sunday on the Daxing Airport Express subway line to spare passengers
the trouble of swiping a card (刷卡) or scanning a QR code to catch a train , the Beijing Municipal Commission of
Transport said.
Any commuter aged 14 and above can first register the print of either palm through a simple, automated
process and provide relevant information to authorize the payment gateway of WeChat, a popular messaging app in
China. Once the palm print is registered, a commuter can scan the palm at any automated ticket gate to pass
through. The fare is automatically paid after exit. Besides, the registration is a one-time process and doesn’t require
renewal.
“Passengers can just place a palm above the scanning machine when entering or exiting a subway station. The
ticket gate will open if the palm scan matches the palm print registered voluntarily,” said Zhang Li, an expert at the
Beijing Metro Network Control Center.
The biometric method combines the use of palm print and vein mapping, which are different for every
individual. Therefore, data masking and encryption (加密 ) technologies have been applied to protect user
information.
Xin Jianhua, general manager of the public service center at WeChat Pay, said palm scans can be gradually
used in offices, schools, gyms and restaurants, as it requires no contact and is therefore safer and more efficient.
“Currently, it is very useful for the elderly and those who have physical limitations,” he said. “Use of biometric
data allows passengers to take subway trains if they do not have cash or when they forget their subway cards,” he
added.
27. What do we know about palm scanning
A. Anyone aged 14 and above has to register the print.
B. There is an automatic payment after exit
C. Passengers should have both palms registered.
D. The registration needs updating every year.
29. What does the underlined word “masking” probably mean
A. Removing. B. Decoding. C. Uploading. D. Hiding
30. Which statement may Xin Jianhua disagree with
A. Palm scanning is of limited use to the disabled.
B. The new technology is more time-saving.
C. The future of palm scans is promising
第 4页/共 15页
D. Palm scanning spares passengers the trouble of taking cards.
31. What’s the main idea of this article
A. The ways of riding the subway in Beijing.
B. Beijing’s introduction of palm-print access on a subway line
C. People’s attitudes towards palm scanning in the subway.
D. The advantages of scanning palms to enter and exit subway stations.

Educators used to worry that comics or TV might affect how students think. Today, the concern is different
and backed by surprising data. A growing body of research shows that the long-term rise in average IQ scores,
known as the Flynn effect, has not only stopped but is actually going opposite among people, especially the young
in several countries.
Intelligence is inborn, to some extent, but it also depends on our environments. Too many of our children
struggle to focus in a way previous generations did not. While the causes are complex, mobile phones and social
media are the chief ones, and many children admit as much. However, an even more fundamental shift is occurring
with the rise of AI. The threat that AI poses to intelligence is existential: it allows children to outsource their
thinking entirely. Fundamental skills like memorising text, or reading a map could soon be a thing of the past as
cognitive offloading becomes a normal way of working.
As some scholars argue, the issue lies not only with technology, but with a widespread belief that exams
need to be adjusted in order to embrace AI. This mindset is leading us toward a dangerous cognitive downgrade.
The danger here is the separation of process from “product”. In the eyes of some tech advocates, the essay is simply
a product, a sequence of words to be generated as quickly as possible. But writing is thinking. Real learning
happens through actively recalling information, organizing ideas, and shaping sentences. If students rely on AI to
generate a finished essay, they will miss the process of figuring it out, leaving them unable to question, adapt, or
truly use that knowledge.
Ultimately, learning requires friction-the struggle of not knowing, the effort of recall. Using AI to bypass this
struggle doesn’t create smarter students, but passive consumers of information. Therefore, our goal must be to
encourage thoughtful engagement: teaching students to use technology for deepening their own understanding, not
replacing it, so they can navigate the future with critical judgment.
32.What has the recent research revealed
A.The decline in average IQ. B.A new way to measure IQ.
C.A change in education system. D.The impact of traditional media.
33.How does AI affect children according to paragraph 2
A.Forcing them to improve focus. B.Reducing their intellectual engagement.
C.Improving their efficiency in learning tasks. D.Changing how they acquire fundamental skills.
34.Why does the author mention some tech advocates in paragraph 3
A.To highlight the speedy progress of AI. B.To criticize a view that products come first.
C.To prove the popularity of technology in writing. D.To compare modern and traditional exam systems.
35.What is suggested in the last paragraph
A.Taking on challenging tasks. B.Depending on smart learning.
C.Upgrading the technology of AI. D.Using technology as a thinking aid.

Many of us want to age well — staying in good physical and cognitive health into our 90s and even beyond.
But not everyone has the genes linked to longevity (长寿). ____36____. Here are some ways to promote a long and
healthy life, according to people who are known as “super agers”.
Choose the right food
89-year-old top nutrition expert Marion Nestle attributes her longevity to the principle: ____37____. She
defines food as unprocessed or minimally processed, not ultra-processed. She eats everything but in small amounts,
partly due to age-related metabolism (新陈代谢) decline.
____38____
92-year-old Emma from Italy is a record-breaking runner, training 2-3 times weekly and walking on rest days.
She advises older athletes to check with doctors, know limits and stay consistent. Experts say consistent exercise
slows aging, recommending at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity (有氧运动) daily.
Connect with others and have a little fun
____39____. A study found exercise, healthy diet, socializing and brain games improve older adults’
cognition. Loneliness raises dementia (痴呆) risk, while strong social ties protect it. Morera and Rice, who are over
90s, stay socially active. They say that small and frequent positive social experiences build happiness and a good
life habit.
Don’t fear setbacks
Many view aging as decline but one research shows people over 60 can regain strength after health issues,
with good mental health, social ties and healthy habits (no smoking, good diet and sleep). Florene Shuber, 91, said,
“____40____.” She started gym training at 82 after several falls. Now she feels younger and stronger, stressing
consistency is vital.
A. It’s never too late
B. Perseverance leads to victory
C. Try to be consistent in your workouts
D. Eat unprocessed food, not too much
E. Research shows social interactions boost well-being
F. You can increase your chances of aging well with certain lifestyle choices
G. You can still extend your lifespan through regular exercise and a balanced diet

I had always thought of my neighborhood as a peaceful and friendly place. However, all that changed when
Mr. Thompson moved in next door. He was a middle-aged man who seemed to have a rather strange lifestyle.
At first, I didn’t pay much attention to him. But one day, I noticed that his car was always parked in a way that
blocked part of my driveway. It was really inconvenient, especially when I was in a hurry to go to work or pick up
my kids from school. I politely asked him to be more careful with his parking, but he just gave me a cold look and
said he would do so as he was pleased. This made me get cross with him.
As time went by, more problems arose. Mr. Thompson had a big dog that barked loudly day and night. I could
barely have a sound sleep, and my kids were also disturbed by the noise. I tried to talk to him about the dog, but he
refused to listen. He even accused me of being too sensitive.
One evening, I came home from a long-day work, extremely worn out. Just as I was about to park my car, I
found that Mr. Thompson’s car was once again blocking my driveway. I was so frustrated that I knocked on his
door forcefully. After seemed a long time, the door opened. There stood Mr. Thompson with an indifferent look on
his face. Words were exchanged, and both of us were angry. We had a heated argument. He even slammed the door
shut right in front of me. After that, we didn’t talk to each other for weeks. My once proud and friendly
neighborhood ties are gone.
One day, as I was mowing the law(n 修剪草坪)in my garden, I saw Mr. Thompson struggling to carry a heavy
box along his driveway.

It seemed that he was about to drop it. I hesitated for a moment, recalling all the unpleasant experiences I had
with him. A part of me felt that he deserved to struggle after how rudely he had treated me. But as I watched him
wobble under the weight of the box, his face tense with effort, another part of me felt guilty for just standing there.
I had always believed in kindness, yet here I was, debating whether to help a neighbor in need. Taking a deep
breath, I set aside my pride and walked over. “Let me help you.” I said, reaching for the box. He looked at me,
surprised, but after a brief pause, he nodded silently, and together we carried it inside.
As we were standing in his living room, Mr. Thompson broke the ice. He let out a sigh and, in a softer tone
than I had ever heard from him, admitted that he hadn’t meant to be rude before. Recovering from surgery had left
him frustrated and short-tempered, and he realized now how inconsiderate he had been. Hearing this, my frustration
melted away. I admitted that I had judged him too quickly. As we talked, the tension between us faded, replaced by
a quiet understanding. From that day on, our relationship changed—we weren’t just neighbors anymore but two
people willing to give each other a second chance.

around the house to prevent thieves from jumping in. I’ve never seen that in America.
W: Well, it’s not strange for me. I grew up in China. I’ve seen that kind of scene before. Let’s go back to this post.
It’s said that in Norway, people let their babies sleep outside, even if it’s cold.
M: That’s because they believe the outdoor environment, especially the fresh air, is good for babies’ health and
development. By the way, the babies are usually dressed warmly.
W: Well, I still can’t understand it. And look at this one: In Mexico, people treat death with love and fun. There is
even a festival called Day of the Dead.
M: Yeah. And there is a movie about that named Coco.

heard Sun Guang, head of Nanming district’s cultural department, became popular after his performance.

【原文】W: After heart surgery, Katharine Holmes was determined to get back to the dance she loved.
Katharine, 62, from Suffolk, the UK became a keen dancer in her 40s. “My two children were growing up and I
thought it’s time for me to do something I enjoy,” she said. Katharine, who worked in a library, always won
competitions. “When I first started dancing, it was mainly Latin dances, like Samba and Jive. Then I started
ballroom dancing, like Tango. My absolute favorite is dancing the Foxtrot to Fly Me to the Moon. It’s so smooth
and fantastic,” she added. It was at a dance in 2018 that she started feeling unwell. Katharine realized she should
have got medical help immediately. But she didn’t want to make a fuss, so she went home. After she had arrived,
her husband Frank called an ambulance. She was taken to the hospital and then had heart surgery. She even had
strokes after the operation. “I couldn’t get out of bed or walk at first,” she said. Challenges that she faced included
the loss of balance and weaker muscles, but they didn’t stop her from dancing. With her strong will and hard work,
she got back to a good enough standard to compete in the grand finals of a dance competition held at Blackpool’s
Winter Gardens.
