Students make a ‘first-aid kit (急救箱)’ to help rescue dolphins.
A group of middle school students from Minnesota, US, has built a floating robot to help save dolphins, the
Cape Cod Times reported. They called it the Aqua Assistant (水上助手). On July 2, they tested it with dolphin
rescue experts in Plymouth, near the Atlantic Ocean.
The students, aged 12 to 14, began their project last August for the FIRST Lego League, a program that
encourages young people to explore science and technology. Their challenge was to find a creative solution to one
problem the ocean was facing.
The Aqua Assistant is like a floating first-aid kit. It is made from pool noodles, foam (泡沫), plastic pipes and
a small motor. It carries medical tools, towels and even a glow-in-the-dark (夜光的) flag, which helps rescuers treat
dolphins in the water, especially when many animals need help at the same time.
“We all love whales and dolphins, and we want to protect them,” said student Sam Gerber. “We also want to
support the rescuers and make their work safer.”
“It’s brilliant,” said Lauren Brandkamp from Whale and Dolphin Conservation. “It’s so cool that these
students are so warm-hearted to finding solutions to real-world problems.”
11. Who built the Aqua Assistant
A. Dolphin rescue experts from Plymouth. B. A group of US middle school students.
C. Scientists from the Atlantic Ocean Research Center. D. Teachers from the FIRST Lego League.
12. When did the students begin their project
A. On July 2 this year. B. In Plymouth near the Atlantic Ocean.
C. When they were 10 years old. D. Last August.
13. What can the Aqua Assistant carry to help rescue dolphins
A. Pool noodles and foam. B. Plastic pipes and a motor.
C. Medical tools, towels and a glow-in-the-dark flag. D. Whales and dolphins in danger.
第 2页/共 11页
14. What does the underlined word “brilliant” mean in Paragraph 6
A. cheap. B. boring. C. excellent. D. helpless.
15. What can we learn from the passage
A. The Aqua Assistant has been used to save hundreds of dolphins.
B. The FIRST Lego League aims to develop students’ interest in science and technology.
C. The students built the robot only to win the Lego League competition.
D. Lauren Brandkamp thinks the students’ project is useless for dolphin rescue.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is in the center of New Zealand’s North Island. Like a great painting waiting to
be seen, it is the most famous one-day walk for people who love adventure and nature.
When you start this amazing walk, you’ll see it’s more than just a hike. The walk is inside Tongariro National
Park, a UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) site. Here you can enjoy the wild beauty of New Zealand’s nature. What
makes this walk very special is its different kinds of land features (特征). You can see active volcanoes (火山) like
Tongariro and Ruapehu. In just one day, you will see bright blue lakes, volcanic rocks and green plants.
The road is easy to follow and well looked after. People in different health conditions can enjoy it, but you still
need to be quite healthy. Most people finish the walk in 6 to 8 hours. It depends on how fit you are and how often
you stop to rest.
It is also important to pick the right time for your walk. The best months are in summer, from December to
February in New Zealand. At this time, the weather is usually more stable and days are longer. This gives you
enough daylight to finish the walk. Spring and autumn can also be good times to go. There are often fewer people
then. The views can be very beautiful, especially in autumn when the leaves change color.
Before you go, remember to check the weather. In the mountains, the weather can change very fast. Whether
you are an experienced hiker or someone who just started walking, you will find every step of the trip worth it.
16. Why does the writer mention “a painting” in the first paragraph
A. To compare different styles B. To suggest the high tour cost.
C. To highlight the fantastic view. D. To explain the length of the walk.
17. What makes the Crossing special according to paragraph 2
A. It has special landscapes. B. It is home to many animals.
C. It takes a whole week to finish. D. It is designed for experienced hikers.
18. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the walk
第 3页/共 11页
A. Its difficulty. B. Its popularity. C. Its resting points. D. Its safety management.
19. Why does the writer suggest choosing summer (December to February) for the walk
A. Because the weather is more changeable then.
B. Because the park is less crowded in summer.
C. Because the volcanic activity is less active during that period.
D. Because the daylight hours are longer and the weather is more stable.
20. What is the best title for the text
A. A Safety Tip for Beginners B. A Day Walk Recommendation
C. The Volcanoes in New Zealand D. The Best Season to Explore Nature

Ffh. Ffh. Ffh! It was not just the empty nest (鸟巢) of a pewee bird (绿霸鹟) as Amy had found the last five
days. Amy ran home through the woods.
“Mum!” she shouted. “I see birds. Two. In cave (洞穴). Beautiful!”
Mum smiled. Birds! Always birds! From the moment Amy woke up in the morning to the moment she closed
her eyes at night, she thought only of birds.
Amy climbed straight to her attic room—her museum, she called it. Every shelf, every spare inch of floor, was
covered with nests, bird models and natural science books. The walls were covered with pencil and crayon
drawings of many different kinds of birds, all signed “Amy in the woods.”
“ Are those the same birds who built the nest last year Will they return to the cave next spring ” Amy always
wondered. “I will study my cave birds. I will draw them just as they are.” Amy made up her mind.
In a week, the birds were used to her. They were busy building their nest as Amy watched and drew with her
pencils. Soon the dried brown nest became a soft green bed.
Amy watched as two baby birds came out. She watched as the young birds flew for the first time. She began to
feel a part of this small family.
When the days grew shorter and the autumn air began to bite. Amy knew the birds would leave soon. But

river, under a bridge, she found two more nesting birds. And one wore a silver ring around its leg.

Dear Ethan,
I’ve learned from the school radio program that you have difficulty in reading ancient Chinese poems and
need a reading buddy. I’d like to be your partner.
First, I love reading ancient Chinese poems and I’m quite familiar with many of them. I can help you
understand their meanings. Second, I’m good at Chinese and English, so I can explain the poems clearly and help
with difficult words. Third, I’m good at guiding others to explore the beauty of poems.
We can read one poem each week. I’ll explain the background first, and then we can discuss the feelings in the
poem. I’m sure we can learn a lot together.
Looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
