The world knows Sherlock Holmes (福尔摩斯 ) because of the British writer Arthur Conan Doyle and his
detective book series about Holmes. But the West knows Di Renjie or Judge Dee, China’s Sherlock Holmes, thanks
to Dutch sinologist (汉学家) Robert van Gulik and his great work Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee.
Robert came to know Dee, a character based on the historical figure Di Renjie from the Tang dynasty, and the
crime novel Di Gong An when he was working in China in the 1940s. He had great admiration for Dee, so he
translated the book into English.
Between 1950 and 1967, Robert wrote 16 novels and 8 short stories. In the series, he described cases solved
by Judge Dee. He also introduced plenty of culture and customs of the Tang dynasty.
Once the novel came out, it won western people’s hearts. It has been translated into over 10 languages and has
sold millions of copies worldwide. It has greatly helped the western people get a better understanding of China.
Besides, many adaptations (改编) inspired by the novel have been made around the world including China. A new
TV series, Judge Dee’s Mystery, has been aired in China. Many people who watch it think highly of it.
“I read the stories when I was 10 or 11 years old. It didn’t mean very much to me at that time. In later life, I
have re-read the stories several times and discovered how special Judge Dee was as described by my father.
Between the lines, there is a lot of wisdom in the writing,” said Thomas van Gulik, son of Robert van Gulik.
In the eyes of Thomas, it’s fantastic that his father brought the master detective of the Tang dynasty, Di Renjie,
back to life in the Judge Dee crime novels.

When winter arrived, the porcupine (豪猪 ) looked for somewhere nice and warm to live. He ran into the
woods, looking around for a place.
First, be came to a fallen tree trunk.
“This looks like a suitable place!” he said, spying a hole in its side.
But when he poked his head (探头) in, he heard “You can’t stay here. It’s our home, and breakfast, lunch and
dinner!” said hundreds of tiny termites (白蚁). The porcupine apologized (道歉) and backed away.
“Now where can I go ” he wondered.
第 7页/共 19页
Then he found a space under a thick bush that seemed to be protected from the wind, so he tried crawling (爬)
in there.
“Hey!” hissed the lynx (猞猁), showing her sharp paws. “This is my place, and don’t you forget it!” The porcupine
went away in a hurry—he didn’t want any trouble. The poor porcupine was really getting worried, “I might freeze
if I don’t find somewhere to stay soon!” he said, his teeth chattering.
A snake overheard the porcupine and felt sorry for him. She poked her head out of her hole and said, “Would
you like to stay in here with me My burrow (洞穴) is quite small, but I’m sure we can both fit!”
The porcupine was ever so thankful! He pushed his way into the snake’s narrow home. “This is so nice!” he
said.“How kind of you to let me in!”
However, when the snake tried to get to sleep, she found it impossible to get into a comfortable position.
Twist and turn as she might, she was always getting hurt by the porcupine’s spines (刺)...
“Can you move over a bit ” she asked. The porcupine tried, but it didn’t help! They both spent an uneasy
night in the little burrow and hardly slept at all!“I really wanted to help the poor porcupine,” the snake thought,
“but I wish I’d never invited him in.”
The porcupine was feeling just as upset. When morning came, he cleared his throat and said, “I’m sorry that
things are so uncomfortable, especially as you have been so kind. I think I have an idea, if you agree!”
The snake was still painful and tired from her sleepless night, so she just nodded. With his paws, the porcupine
began scratching (刨) at the hole’s walls.
As the snake watched in wonder, the porcupine dug out an extra room that was just the right size for him.
“There you are!” he said in a satisfied voice. “Now there is plenty of room for both of us!”
The snake and the porcupine shared that burrow all winter. It was warmer with the two of them in it, and
there was enough space for both animals to sleep comfortably.
The snake enjoyed the stores the porcupine told, and the porcupine was impressed by the snake’s skills at
finding food. Their unlikely friendship made winter less lonely for both of them.
“I’m glad I let you in!” the snake hissed.

Can you imagine walking around your city in just 15 minutes Dr. Carlos Moreno introduced the idea of the
“15-minute city” in 2016. This idea became especially popular during the special times when people asked for
basic services close to home. It helps create a healthier and more sustainable (可持续发展的) lifestyle.
In traditional cities, basic services such as stores, schools and parks are mainly in the city center, while people
live nearby the city. This makes cities less walkable, so ▲ . For example, Ali starts his day with a
15-minute drive to school, and his parents drive another 30 minutes to work. (Picture A)
To solve these problems, the 15-minute city idea was created. In these cities, most people cycle or walk
because they can fulfill their daily needs within 15 minutes. These cities focus on people rather than cars, with
第 9页/共 19页
walker-friendly streets and more trees. For example, Sarah walks 5 minutes to school, and her parents walk 15
minutes to work. After school, they all walk to the park and gym on their way home. (Picture B)
These changes make life not only more convenient but also more sustainable and enjoyable. A walkable
community reduces the need for private cars and produces fewer carbon emissions (碳排放), saving money for
both local people and governments. At the same time, it also encourages social communication and healthier
lifestyles.
However, creating 15-minute cities can be challenging. Some areas have strict laws about how land can be
used, like only for houses. More research is needed to solve these problems and make the 15-minute city an
achievable idea for the world.
31. Which of the following can be put in“ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2
A. most people prefer walking to work B. people enjoy living in the city center
C. most people depend on cars to get around D. public transportation is very convenient
32. What does the underlined word “fulfill” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Imagine. B. Develop. C. Understand. D. Satisfy.
33. Which graph shows the difference in school travel time between traditional cities and 15-minute cities
A. B. C. D.
34. What long-term benefit of the 15-minute city can be inferred (推断) from Paragraph 4
A. Carbon emissions may increase in the future.
B. People may reduce the cost for medical care.
C. Public transportation may become less necessary.
D. Governments will spend more on roads and parking.
35. What is the best title for the passage
A. City Life Changes: Slow & Fast B. Community Needs: Basic & Special
C. The 15-Minute City: Easy & Good D. City Planning: Hard & Important

Dear Editor,
I’m Sandy. I’m glad to share my experience of taking our exchange students from the UK to visit Taizhou during
the summer holiday.
First, we went to Fengcheng River. The scenery along the river was beautiful. We went boating and enjoyed the
gentle breeze. Then we visited Qin Lake National Wetland Park. We went cycling around the lake and watched
many birds. After that, we went to Qintong Ancient Town. We tried local food, such as fish balls and crab roe
dumplings. We also learned about the culture and history there.
The exchange students were amazed by the beauty of Taizhou. They said they would never forget this trip. I felt
very proud of my hometown. It was a wonderful experience to share our beautiful city with friends from another
country.
Yours,
Sandy
