Debra Des Vignes spent more than a decade as an on-air news reporter in small markets across the US. For most of
that time, she covered crime. It wasn't until later that she realized she didn't know the full story of the people she was
covering.
Des Vignes had always wanted to volunteer at a prison to better understand the people behind the stories she covered.
The opportunity came in 2017 when she met a co-worker whose husband worked for the local prison. Des Vignes
volunteered to teach a class about victims' experiences, which was intended to help criminals see the consequences of
their crimes from the victim's perspective.
“I think society has that image of TV and movies and what that represents, and how a criminal is supposed to act or
behave with anger,” Des Vignes said.“I found the exact opposite.”
During the course, Des Vignes decided to depart from the curriculum and have the prisoners write a letter to their
victim. Des Vignes said she witnessed these men open up in ways they hadn't before and write some very impactful
letters.
That class inspired Des Vignes to start her own nonprofit to focus on writing with prisoners. In 2018, the Prison
Writers Workshop was born and has since expanded to eight correctional institutions.
The curriculum, developed by Des Vignes and her all-volunteer team, provides imprisoned students with a
foundation in creative writing through weekly prompts and introduces fiction,non-fiction, poetry, and play writing. For
Des Vignes, the goal is to create a safe space where they can write and openly share.
“Some may want to make sense of their past; some may want to spend an hour and a half in a positive environment,”
Des Vignes said.“And some may just want to be heard and felt seen and welcomed.”
24. Why did Des Vignes volunteer to teach a class about victims' experiences

B. To help those victims to get treatment.
C. To improve the relationship between criminals.
D. To teach offenders writing skills for a future job.
25. What can we infer about Des Vignes from the text
A. She is strict with all of the prisoners.
B. She is indifferent to the prisoners' feelings.
C. She is enthusiastic about helping the prisoners.
D. She only focuses on the prisoners' writing skills.
26. What is the purpose of the Prison Writers Workshop
A. To teach prisoners only basic writing skills for daily use.
B. To help prisoners get released from prison earlier.
C. To make prisoners become professional writers.
D. To provide a creative space for expression.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. The development of a news reporter's career.
B. The importance of creative writing for prisoners.
C. A news reporter's experience in teaching in prison.
D. The establishment and goal of the Prison Writers Workshop.

Old fishing nets may look useless, but they add up. The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates fishers
throw away around 640,000 tons of nets every year. The waste also rots extremely slowly, presenting major
environmental problems across not only crowded areas of the world, but in oceans and beaches. Multiple organizations
have launched projects aimed at the issue, but they face a difficult task, especially when it comes to the larger nets.
In recent years, engineers have started adding fiber from old fishing nets to building materials. This process helps
strengthen the recycled materials for reuse in construction.Aware of the unused value, researchers decided to work
together on a new way to develop more usage from the waste nets.
Once they removed any remaining waste material, they broke down the remaining nets, typically made with plastic
fibers, and mixed them into a connecting material. Next, they pressed, heated, and cut their new material into small
blocks. Block 1 contained only fishing net fibers, while Block 2 featured the net material and an additional strengthening
part.
During the production process, the connecting material inside each block begins to melt after coming into contact
with hot concrete. Once melted, the recycled fishing net fibers are set free into the material and strengthen it by
improving both its flexibility and ability to resist breaking.
Researchers then tested three concrete mixtures containing 40 percent recycled building materials and various block
ratios(比率 ) against a control concrete made without recycled materials. The team found that every fishing net-added
concrete was stronger than traditional concrete. On top of this, the combination of connecting materials made it easier to
change the concrete's thickness, which could reduce the necessary production temperature—— further reducing its
energy requirements and pollution output.
The team added that future research could focus on better improving how the fiber blocks are made, or increasing
strengthening part amounts to increase the concrete's strength. They also believe that combining additional recycled
materials with the nets may further improve the material while also making the industry even more sustainable.
28. What causes main environmental issue of fishing nets
A. Their fire risk. B. Their bad smell.
C. Their long lifetime. D. Their high cost.
29. How do fishing net fibers improve concrete
A. They can reduce concrete's weight.
B. They can make concrete melt faster.
C. They can improve concrete's thickness.
D. They can increase concrete's flexibility.
30. What advantage does adding connecting material to concrete bring
A. Lower production temperature. B. Higher strength.
C. Reduced material use. D. Faster construction.
31. What is researchers' attitude towards future studies
A. Critical. B. Hopeful. C. Proud. D. Indifferent.

For millions of years, megalodon sharks were top ocean hunters and then came the great whites. New studies of
teeth show that competition for food from great white sharks may have helped push the giants toward dying out.
Scientists studied shark eating habits by looking at zinc (锌) in the teeth of 20 living shark species and 13 extinct
species, including megalodons. Megalodons and great white sharks lived in similar environments, eating sea animals
such as whales and seals, the researchers reported on May 31 in Nature Communications.
Megalodons were one of the largest hunters ever to live, growing to at least 14 meters long. This giant began
threatening the oceans around 23 million years ago. When and why it died out isn't clear. The species may have remained
until about 2.6 million years ago. Or it might have disappeared as early as 3.5 million years ago, right around the time
when the great white shark appeared.
To find out if the two sharks ate similar food, the researchers turned to zinc, which has two main forms: zinc-66 and
zinc-64. The amounts of zinc, kept in tooth surface, can show an animal's position in the food chain. Plants and plant
eaters are relatively high in zinc-66.Higher up in the food chain, that 66-to-64 ratio decreases. This means the
relationship between the two forms of zinc changes as you move up the food chain.
The studies found that when and where megalodons and white sharks existed together, the sharks had similar ratios.
That finding suggests that their diets were similar too, according to scientist Jeremy McCormack of the Max Planck
Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and colleagues.
Still, that the sharks ate similar food isn't the only proof they were in competition, the researchers say. And there are
many factors that may have helped drive megalodons to die out. Those factors include ocean changes, falling food
populations and competition for food with other ocean creatures.
32. How did the researchers find the feeding habits of the sharks
A. By interviewing many experts.
B. By bringing the sharks back to life.
C. By analyzing zinc in the teeth of the sharks.
D. By returning to the habitats of the sharks.
33. What does the underlined word“ratio” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. The total amount of something.
B. The relationship between two numbers.
C. The speed of a chemical change.
D. The distance between two places.
34. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. The two kinds of sharks liked eating the same food.
B. The two kinds of sharks must have competed for food.
C. The extinction of megalodons had nothing to do with white sharks.
D. White sharks might not be the only factor of the extinction of megalodons.
33. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. There is much competition in the ocean
B. Great white sharks competed with megalodons
C. The two kinds of sharks have much in common
D. Great white sharks may have helped drive megalodons to die out

Student Gardens: More Than Just Growing Food
Across the US, more and more schools are turning empty lots and playground corners into student-run gardens.
These small green spaces aren't just about growing tomatoes or carrots—— they' re teaching kids big lessons that go
beyond the classroom.
At Lincoln Middle School in Portland, Oregon, students in grades 6-8 tend to a1,200-square-foot garden every
week. 36 “We start with tiny seeds and watch them become food. It makes me think about how much care things need to
grow,” says 13-year-oldMia Carter, who helps plant lettuce (生菜) and herbs. The garden is part of the school's“Growth &
Giving” program: 37
Teachers say the gardens build key skills. 38 “Math comes alive when kids measure soil depth or count harvests,”
explains science teacher Mr. Lopez.“They practice teamwork when they plan plots(种 植 地 块 ) together, and
responsibility when they remember to water their plants.” For students like 12-year-old Jayden Reed, who once struggled
with focus, the garden has been a game-changer. 39
Student gardens also connect kids to their communities. Last month, Lincoln Middle School hosted a“Garden Fair”
where families tried student-grown snacks and learned how to start small gardens at home. 40 “It's not just a school
project—— it's a way to bring people together,” says principal Ms. Garcia.
These gardens prove that learning doesn't have to stay inside four walls. They grow fresh food— but more
importantly, they grow curious, kind, and capable kids who understand how their actions can make a difference.
A. Many find peace in caring for plants.
B. Kids use the other half to cook in class.
C. It lets students learn by real teamwork.
D. Students spend hours planting and weeding.
E. They share half the harvest with food banks.
F. These skills help them in daily study and life.
G. Such event strengthens bonds between families.

Archeologists(考古学家) in China have unearthed 56 they believe is an ancient astronomical calendar(天文历).
The 23 wooden pieces were found inside a about 2,200-year-old tomb in China's Wulong District, Chongqing. They are
carved with Chinese 57 (character) connected to an astronomical calendar known as Heavenly Stems and Earthly
Branches. It was started during the Shang Dynasty, 58 ruled from 1600 BCE to about1050 BCE. This is the first time
that written wooden pieces linked to the ancient calendar 59 (find) in a tomb.
The archeologists say round holes at the edge 60 the wooden pieces show all 23 were once tied and used together.
However, they do not know how the calendar, which was based on a 60-year cycle, 61 (exact) worked. They think that
one piece stood for the then-present year, while the rest were used 62 (represent) other years.
63 (base) on the condition of the skeleton(骨架) inside the tomb, archeologists determined that it used to be a strong,
middle-aged male. The copper spears, bows and arrows, and other weapons found alongside suggest he may have been
good at martial arts. The tomb also contained 64 (vary) high-quality objects, including copper and bronze pots. This has
led archeologists to doubt 65 (it) owner was a person of high position.

Mrs. Anderson, Lily's 8th-grade teacher, taught a chapter about diversity and understanding differences.
She said,“Everyone belongs, no matter how we look or move.”During breaks, Lily saw Tommy—a new student in a
blue wheelchair— watching the catch game alone. He gripped his wheelchair arms tight, and no one invited him. Lily
felt a pang of sadness, so she ran over and said,“Hey Tommy! Wanna play We' ll pass slower for you.”Tommy looked
up, surprised but hopeful, and slowly nodded. For the first time that week, a genuine smile appeared on his face as Lily
carefully explained the rules to him.
That evening, over dinner, Lily told her mom, Mrs. Martin, about Tommy:“He still seemed shy, even when we
played.” Mrs. Martin smiled,“Kindness isn't just one act.Tommy might love space or drawing too— your care already
helped.” Lily nodded, thinking of ways to make him feel part of the group. She lay awake that night, remembering
how Tommy's eyes brightened when he finally caught the ball, and she knew she wanted to see that light again.
The next day, Lily asked Mrs. Anderson for a group activity Tommy could join in. Mrs.Anderson planned a
storytelling session. When it was Tommy's turn, he shared a thrilling astronaut story, making the class laugh and
cheer. Over two weeks, classmates sat with Tommy at lunch, asked about his books, and adjusted games for him.
Even the boys who once ignored him now saved him a seat at their table, and girls brought him space magazines from
home.
Mrs. Anderson then had the class draw favorite moments. Lily drew all classmates—including Tommy grinning
in his wheelchair— playing tag. As she added a sun, she thought how a small“Wanna play ” became real friendship.
The bell rang for lunch, and Tommy wheeled over, saying“Want to walk together I have a new space book to talk
about.” Lily grinned— but Mrs. Anderson called her to the desk, holding a stack of paper...
