There are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants
have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1750, there were no restaurants. That means there were no places that
provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drink that you
picked from a menu. In fact, there were no menus anywhere.
There were eating places travelers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that
would serve food. And there were taverns where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals
prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a “restaurant”.
A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1750, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups. He used the word
“restaurant” to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help “restore”
(恢复)your health—so he called the soups “restaurants”. Soon, people started buying Boulanger’s soups even
when they were not ill. And over time, people began to use the word “restaurant” to refer to a place selling soup
rather than the soup itself. More “restaurants” opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often.
Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup. In the 1790s, menus started to appear. By
the mid-1800s, there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops.
Tea houses became popular throughout China. Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich and so on.

Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat their pets as a part of the family. They treat their pets as their
children—sometimes even better.
In America, there are more families with pets than those with children. 28 percent of U. S. homes have pets.
Some of the pets are not very common, such as monkeys, snakes, butterflies and even wolves. Those animals come
from other countries, especially China, Thailand, South Africa and so on. More common pets include fish, mice
and birds. However, their favorites are cats and dogs. They sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or
cats make better pets. “Dog people” and “cat people” often have friendly arguments about that.
People can get many benefits from pets. Pets stay with people, make people happy and help people get rid of
loneliness. Therefore, most of Americans like pets. They think pets should be treated well. At least 75 animal
welfare(福利)organizations have been set up in America. They provide care and good services for homeless
animals. Some pets can help people live a better life. Dogs can offer protection from strange visitors. Cats can play
games with the children. Some kinds of pets can provide love for their owners. In fact, to keep a pet can help a
young couple have the responsibility to raise children. Pets are as basic to U. S. culture as hot dogs or apple pies.

is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. ____46____
Is it possible to be born shy Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly.
Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. ____47____
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Some scientists found that children who had older brothers
or sisters were often bullied (欺侮) by their older brothers and sisters. So they became shy. At the same time,
children with no brothers and sisters may also be shy. ____48____ They are not able to learn the same social skills
as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries,
they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people
said so. ____49____ One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when
people do not succeed, they blame (责备) themselves for their failure. In Israel, people often blame failure on
outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say it
is possible for you to get over your shyness. ____50____ And don’t forget—if you are shy, you are not the only

A Window to the World : My Pen Pal in Kazakhstan
As part of a cultural exchange program inspired by the Belt and Road initiative (倡议), I was matched with a
pen pal, Aruzhan, from Kazakhstan. This connection has opened a window to a world I knew little about.
Our exchange happens monthly via email. I write in English, and she courageously responds in a mix of
English and Chinese she is diligently learning. Her letters paint vivid pictures of life on the vast Kazakh steppe, her
family’s traditions, and national festivals like Nauryz. She describes the taste of Beshbarmak, a beloved dish, and
the thrill of traditional horse riding games. In return, I share stories about my life in a Chinese megacity, explain the
customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and sent her a small paper-cutting as a token of friendship.
This ongoing dialogue has been transformative (变革性的). It has moved our relationship beyond mere “pen
pals” to genuine friends. Learning about her culture has not only broadened my horizons (视野) but has also
allowed me to view and appreciate my own cultural background from a fresh and more grateful perspective. It’s a
beautiful reminder of how shared curiosity can build bridges across continents.

Health is the foundation of our life. But the harm of it can also be a big deal. We are supposed to take it
seriously, or it will punish you somehow.
It was a night two years ago, and I had already decided to travel the next day. However, I had a serious
stomachache and felt like a huge stone in it. For the sake of my safety, my mom drove me to the hospital and the
doctor asked me to have an examination. It turned out that I had a bad illness and I had to put off my journey. The
doctor said that the cause was my irregular and unhealthy diet.
After that, I began to adjust my diet and eat healthy food. Health problems may get in our way sometimes, so
never treat our body casually.
