A new documentary, Folktales, follows three teenagers who spend a transformative year at a “folk high school” in northern Norway. These schools offer unconventional education: no grades or exams, but encouragement to develop practical outdoor skills, build inner confidence, and
detach from the pressures created by constant digital noise.
Hege, a 19-year-old from southern Norway, comes to the school with modern anxiety from phone overuse and social worries about others’ perceptions of her. Life in Pasvik, a remote area
200 miles from the Arctic Circle, changes her habits. Students learn to set up tents in deep snow, keep warm at -30°C and guide dog sleds (雪橇). Within weeks, Hege uses her phone less and
finds peace in dog sledding on frozen lakes.
The directors, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, contrast this approach with America’s
exam-centered system. Pasvik’s philosophy prioritizes personal growth, social courage, and
character development — shaping how students engage with the world. As a teacher says, “It’s more about who you become than what you learn.”
Rooted in Scandinavian culture and inspired by philosopher N. F. S. Grundtvig, these
schools emphasize open and community-based learning. Norway now has 85 such schools,
hosting 7,000 students yearly who seek a break from traditional study or a chance to reset their lives.
Romain, another student in the film, initially struggles to build a campfire in the freezing
cold and asks to use the teachers’ fire, but his instructor firmly refuses, telling him he must rely on himself. When he finally succeeds, his confidence grows and he finds it easier to connect with
others.
Folktales shows that these schools give young people something vital: the ability to face real challenges, strengthen relationships, and gain a clearer sense of who they are. For students like Hege, the experience is life-shaping.
4 .What does the word “detach” probably mean in paragraph 1
A .Suffer. B .Separate. C .Hide. D .Result.
5 .What is a key feature of Norway’s folk high schools
A .They offer exam-centered courses to improve grades.
B .They stress the training of hands-on skills and mental strength.
C .They prioritize theoretical knowledge over practical application.
D .They concentrate on preparing students for specific future careers.
6 .What is the most important lasting change for a student like Hege
A .Having a clear career path. B .Choosing to live in remote areas.
C .Developing greater self-understanding. D .Gaining special outdoor skill certificates.
7 .Which activity contradicts the school’s principle
A .Public dog-sledding ranking. B .Personal progress journal.
C .Quiet camp for self-thinking. D .Students’ feeling-themed play.

About 300 years ago, some travelers along the Upper and Middle Orinoco River first
reported sightings of mysterious rock engravings (版画), describing snakes and other patterns,
along its shores. But as years passed, these artworks were recorded only in oral traditions and
locals’ word of mouth. The precise location and proof of their existence remained absent. It wasn’t until 2015 that a team of archaeologists first arrived in the region with the goal of searching for
clues ofthe artworks. After years of study, scientists found even more than they had anticipated.
The team visited 157 sites that had rock art, 13 of which had engravings more than a dozen feet tall. A great variety of figures are described, including insects, birds, humans and other
animals. In all, 60 individual engravings exceeded 30-foot dimensions, including a centipede (蜈蚣) and two figures. “Anything that size is monumental in our view,” Philip Riris, the study’s lead author, says. “That means they’re often visible from quite far away, maybe 500 meters to a
kilometer.”
But no creature was more common in the rock faces than snakes, of which the team found dozens. Interestingly, the team found that all of the snakes faced the river and were engraved
where its waterline would have been two thousand years ago. The engravings would have been
visible from higher ground, and certainly by those in incoming boats, leading the team to assume that they were used as territorial markers, boundaries, and landmarks. The team unearthed pottery (陶器) from the ecosystem. It had similar markings to those in rock and dates back about 2,000
years. The team estimates the engravings are about the same age and some 10,000 ancient rock engravings exist within a 1,000 square-mile area along the river.
“The giant snake engravings studied in the paper are some of the largest single rock art images anywhere in the world and mainly come from the heart of a lowland tropical
environment,” Patrick Roberts, an archaeologist at the Max Planck Institute says.
8 .Why did the archaeologists go to the region in 2015
A .To map the river’s waterline. B .To study the local oral traditions.
C .To find evidence of the rock engravings. D .To explore the biodiversity of the region.
9 .How is paragraph 2 mainly developed
A .By listing data. B .By quoting documents.
C .By making assumptions. D .By drawing comparisons.
10 .What could the snake engravings have mainly functioned as
A .Donation. B .Admiration.
C .Decoration. D .Indication.
11 .What does Patrick Roberts mention about the giant snake engravings
A .Their distribution. B .Their components.
C .Their symbolic meanings. D .Their impact on the environment.

For humans, aging is unavoidable. But axolotls (蝾螈), those cute smiling animals of pop culture fame, seemingly avoid this fate to a point.
In a phenomenon called “neoteny”, axolotls never outgrow their initial stage, looking like oversize babies as adults. Not only do they look youthful, with feathery structures and distinctive characteristics, but these critically endangered Mexican species also experience few physical
declines and diseases, and they can regenerate their limbs, tails, and even other organs over their 21-year lifespan. For that reason, human-bred axolotls, which are a light pink in color, are
common research subjects for biologists, who have long been fascinated by their ability to fight aging.
Now, a new study reveals one more mystery about these curious creatures. Their bodies
stop one of the key mechanisms of aging — the epigenetic clock (表观遗传时钟) — when they’re just four years old. An epigenetic clock estimates an animal’s age based on how life events, such as stress or diet, turns its genes on and off. If an animal has experienced a lot of physical and
mental pain, for instance, its epigenetic or biological age, could be much older than its real age.
The findings could be one more step in the long quest to discover effective anti-aging
treatments for humans, such as reducing inflammation (炎症), according to the study published on bioRxiv, a website where studies are posted without peer review. Chasing youth is a popular goal: The anti-aging market, valued at $40 billion, is estimated to hit $60 billion by 2032. What’s more,
understanding axolotl genetics could inspire medicines for regenerating cells, muscles, or maybe even arms and legs.
“It is a great leap forward in aging and regeneration,” says James Godwin, an immunologist at the MDI Biological Laboratory in Maine who was not involved in the new study. “If the
mechanisms can be understood, then many opportunities to improve human health could present themselves.”
The study team examined 180 axolotls from four weeks to 21 years of age. Hopefully, research on large scales is in store for future dedicated scientists.
12 .What is a feature of axolotls due to “neoteny”
A .They experience rapid aging. B .They have a higher risk of disease.
C .They maintain a young appearance. D .They undergo a few dramatic body changes.
13 .Which factor of an animal can affect its epigenetic clock
A .Its size. B .Its color. C .Its habitat D .Its suffering.
14 .What does James Godwin think of the study
A .It is thorough. B .It is promising.
C .It is one-sided. D .It is misunderstood.
15 .What field does the text mainly cover
A .Diet. B .Finance. C .Psychology. D .Biology.

For nearly a year, 91-year-old Donald, a former US soldier, had been frequently visiting US Gold & Pawn (典当) in Manchester, New Hampshire, unwillingly selling off pieces of his wife’s cherished jewelry bit by bit. Each visit felt heavier than the last, as though he were parting with
fragments of their shared life. Each time, he would politely ask for a slightly higher price, his eyes reflecting a mixture of hope and helplessness. There was a quiet dignity in his posture, a sense of duty that never wavered, even as he handed over another treasure from their past.
Janelle Marie, a warm-hearted employee at the shop, noticed his repeated visits and grew
increasingly concerned. She began to recognize his face, the same worn coat, the hesitant steps,
the careful way he unwrapped each item. She sensed something unusual behind his quiet behavior. One afternoon, she approached him gently and asked, “Sir, is everything okay You’ve been
coming here often. Can we help in any other way ” Moved by her kindness, Donald opened up. His wife was battling against a severe illness that demanded his constant care. To make matters worse, their landlord (房东) had recently raised the rent, worsening their financial situation.
It turned out Donald had already sold almost everything of value in their home — including a 1994 Mercedes he had gifted his wife on their 40th anniversary, a cherished symbol of their long marriage. They had no children, no close relatives, and no one to turn to for support, leaving him overwhelmed by loneliness and responsibility. He felt utterly alone in the struggle to protect his
wife and save their home, facing each day with quiet desperation.
Deeply touched by his story, Janelle made up her mind to help. She first convinced the shop
owner, Bob, to extend the loan period and reduce the service fee, which was instantly agreed by
the gentleman. But realizing that wasn’t sufficient, they decided to take it a step further.注意:

interesting. I’d like to recommend including interactive activities like group debates and role-plays related to our lesson topics.
There are several reasons for this tip. First, such activities create a lively and engaging
classroom atmosphere, which naturally boosts our motivation to participate. Second, from a
learning perspective, they allow us to apply language in practical, real-life contexts, helping
improve our communication skills and speaking fluency. Finally, collaborative tasks can reduce anxiety about speaking and promote teamwork among students.
I’d appreciate it if you consider my ideas. I’m confident these changes will make our learning experience both enjoyable and effective.
Yours,
Li Hua
47 .Paragraph 1:
Together with Bob, Janelle launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Donald. She wove together the threads of their story: his wife’s illness diagnosis, their decades of companionship, and the
hardships of selling precious items to make ends meet etc. She also recorded a short video in
which Donald was taking care of his wife with meticulous care and attention. Once the campaign went live, it spread like izens passed the story from screen to screen, and even local hospitals stepped forward to cut their medical charges. In merely a week, the donations soared far beyond their goal — enough to cover the rent, the ongoing treatments, and even a little more for the hard days ahead.Paragraph 2:
Janelle took out the donation money, put it in an envelope and handed it to Donald. Staring at the envelope, Donald froze for a few seconds, then tremblingly opened it. “I…I don’t know how
to thank you,” he said, “You save my wife’s life and our home,” Donald sobbed to Janelle and
Bob. He had thought there would be no one to turn to and he was totally alone. Janelle told him it was himself that he should thank, who had been holding on for so long and that was what made others follow the example.
