Nicholas Joy, a 17-year-old teenager in America, likes skiing. On March 3, he went skiing in Maine. In the
early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a heavy snowstorm hit the area. Joy was unable to see far
because he could only see flakes (薄片,碎片) of snow falling around him. Before he knew it, he had lost his way.
The boy was all alone for there were no other people in sight. He didn’t have food, or water, or a phone. He was
getting colder by the minute.
Joy didn’t know where he was. He tried to calm himself down. He thought about all the survival (求生的)
shows he had watched on TV before. It was time to follow the advice and put what he had learned to good use.
Joy decided to stop skiing. There would be a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed where he was.
The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he stayed outside, his body
temperature would get very low and he would die, so Joy built a small snow cave using his skis. Then, he gathered
many branches and put them on top of the cave to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Joy was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby river. He slept in the cave
with his arms and legs close to his body.
The next day, Joy went out to look for help. He couldn’t find anybody and went back to his cave. On March 5,
Joy went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Finally, Joy
