In June, 11-year-old JoJo Zager organized a 10-day donation drive for Michigan’s Community Food Bank of
Macomb County, planning to collect 10, 000 pounds of food. Worried about funding cuts affecting the area, he first
visited the food bank to learn about its work and how he could help.
JoJo then took action: he set up drop-off boxes at nearby libraries and made leaflets, and his mom helped
share information online. A local newspaper also covered the event, spreading the word widely. Donation boxes
filled up with nonperishable (不易变质的) foods, such as cereal and canned goods. JoJo and his mother took them
to the food bank every other day.
Food insecurity is a serious and widespread challenge in the United States. The food bank supported 50 local
pantries (救济食品室) and helped 400, 000 people in the community last year.
Though JoJo fell short of his 10, 000-pound goal — collecting 6, 000 pounds — he felt proud. The food
bank’s program manager praised him for putting the food bank on the map — many people didn’t know about it
before.

The Wilhelm scream is a famous sound effect in cinema history. And if you’ve watched some films in the
last 70 years, you’ve probably heard it before!
It’s a loud and funny scream that was first recorded in 1951 for the film Distant Drums, for a scene in which
a character is attacked by an alligator (鳄鱼). The scream was later used again in the 1953 movie The Charge at
Feather River. In the film, a character named Private Wilhelm is shot with an arrow (箭), which is where the sound
gets its name.
In the 1970s, sound engineer Ben Burtt discovered the Wilhelm scream while searching through the Warner
Bros. sound archives (档案). He thought it was funny, and began using it in the films he worked on. He first used it
in Star Wars: Episode Ⅳ — A New Hope in 1977, where the scream can be heard during a fight scene. “It was just
for my own pleasure. Nobody asked for it. Nobody noticed it. That was it,” Burtt said.
From there, Burtt secretly included the Wilhelm scream in more films he worked on, including the Indiana
Jones movies, other Star Wars movies and more. Eventually, with the rise of the Internet and the popularity of
DVDs, movie fans began to recognize the scream and its recurring appearances in films.
As word spread, other sound engineers started using the Wilhelm scream in their movies, too. According to
the National Science and Media Museum, the sound is believed to have been used in over 400 movies and TV
shows, including The Lord of the Rings and even Toy Story. Burtt says he tries not to include the scream in his
movies anymore, but his staff use it anyway, as they feel it’s a necessary part of their films. “I’ve created a
monster,” Burtt joked.
8.Why does the author mention Private Wilhelm in paragraph 2
A.To explain the origin of the Wilhelm scream.
B.To make a comparison between two characters.
C.To show how fun and loud the Wilhelm scream is.
D.To prove the success of The Charge at Feather River.
9.In which film was the Wilhelm scream first used by Burtt
A.Distant Drums. B.Toy Story.
C.Star Wars: Episode Ⅳ — A New Hope. D.Indiana Jones.
10.Which of the following has the closest meaning to “recurring” in paragraph 4
A.Reduced. B.Repeated. C.Restored. D.Relaxing.
11.What can we infer about the Wilhelm scream from the last paragraph
A.It is gradually losing its attraction. B.Using it requires Burtt’s agreement.
C.Burtt used it as a sound of a monster. D.It became widely recognized.

Many people wonder when the best time to exercise is. Experts have different opinions about morning,
evening and afternoon workouts. To explore these differences further, let’s look at the benefits of exercising at
different times of the day.
Dr. Jagim from Mayo Clinic Health System says, “Morning workouts make you feel like you do something
good and start the day on a happy note.” After a morning workout, people feel good because of endorphins (内啡
Also, mornings are usually free from other things to do, allowing people to enjoy their afternoons and evenings
without worrying about exercise. For morning workouts, Dr. Jagim says, “Eating a different breakfast with
carbohydrates (碳水化合物), protein, and healthy fats is important. This gives energy for the workout.”
“However, for some people, waking up early to exercise is the last thing they feel like doing, and therefore,
the case for evening workouts is more attractive. Your body works best in the early evening,” says Jake Erickson, a
sports medicine expert. “This is a good time to exercise. During this time, your body has time to wake up a bit by
moving around throughout the day. Also, your body uses oxygen better in the evening. This helps you use your
energy more effectively when you exercise.”
A study with over 90,000 people found that exercising in the afternoon is better for your heart and helps you
live longer than exercising in the morning or evening. This is especially true for older people. Dr. Gende,
emergency physician at Mayo Clinic Health System, says that morning workouts might not be good for people who
work late shifts or stay up late. For them, it’s better to sleep more in the morning and then do a workout in the
middle of the day or early afternoon before their next shift.
While science gives ideas, experts agree the best time matches personal plans and energy. Consistency (一致
性) is more important than timing.
12.What does Dr. Jagim recommend for morning workouts
A.Taking in more fats. B.Having a healthy breakfast.
C.Drinking enough water. D.Avoiding staying up late the night before.
13.What might Jake Erickson be in favor of
A.Early evening workouts suit late risers.
B.The later night exercisers wake up, the better.
C.All people’s bodies work best in the late evening.
D.Morning workouts set a positive tone for night workers.
14.Which group benefits most by afternoon workouts
A.Small kids. B.Active teenagers. C.Elderly people. D.Young women.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Why Is Evening Exercise Good for Everyone B.What Role Does Food Play During Workouts
C.What Is Important for a Healthy Body D.When Is the Best Time to Exercise

Just then, the school bell rang, signaling the end of the day.
Eliza packed up her skipping rope, but her mind was focused on something else — she had to make a

an upcoming competition. Anna, the student who usually did it, was sick, and someone needed to step in. Eliza was
surprised that Ms. White had chosen her. She was nervous and said that her handwriting wasn’t good enough. But
Ms. White encouraged her to think it over and promised to let her make the final decision by the end of the day.
Now, as Eliza walked toward the teachers’ office, her heart raced. The thought of her handwriting being

及下文“Listen to their side(倾听
G 选项“Here are some steps you

17.由上文“Even if you don’t share someone’s point of view, you can still listen to what they want to say. (即使你
不认同别人的观点,你仍然可以听他们想说的话。)”及下文“Keep eye contact, nod and move your body towards
the person you are listening to. Another way to show that you’re listening is by asking questions or repeating what
they have said.
D 选项“Show that you’re paying attention by

C 选项“Stay calm and start with “I” instead of “You”.
An opinion with feelings is weak. If you have a strong opinion, you can make a better case for it with
facts.
故选 A。
20.由上文“Find points you both agree on (找到你们都同意的点)”及下文“Still, look for points you agree on. You
may also have a better understanding of each other’s opinion. It’s worth the effort because healthy communication
builds strong relationships with others.

E 选项“You may find that neither you nor they will change each other’s minds (你

Eliza to focus on her creativity and positive energy. Eliza hesitated, still unsure, but Ms. White reminded her that
trying, even with doubts, was what mattered most. Ms. White smiled brightly. “If you need anything, I’m here.”
After some thought, Eliza replied, “OK, I’ll give it a try.” Ms. White immediately stood up and handed her a
few blank papers and markers. “We’ll start small. Let’s plan it together,” she suggested. Eliza smiled, feeling more
at ease with her teacher’s support. They spent the next few minutes discussing ideas for the bulletin board. As Eliza
sketched out some designs, she realized that maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. With Ms. White’s help, what
she would do was try her best to plan for the upcoming competition, and that was enough.
