At an altitude over 4,500 meters in Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, Southwest
China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, lies Mapam Yumco Lake. For over a decade,
42-year-old Dradul has dedicated himself to protecting the wetland around this precious
lake as an ecosystem guardian.
Before becoming a guardian, he struggled with temporary jobs and hoped for a steady
salary. Now, he earns a stable monthly income of 2,000 yuan and comes to feel a deep
sense of purpose. “Protecting this lake makes me proud. It’s not just work — it’s about
preserving it for future generations,” he said.
Dradul’s workday begins early. He patrols (巡查 ) a fixed 10-kilometer route by
motorcycle, with duties including observing the reserve, recording data, and addressing
ecological threats. Last February, he and his team rescued a wing-broken eagle, sending it
to a rescue center until it recovered. This July, they spent 20 minutes pulling a trapped
wild out of a mudflat with ropes. Educating visitors is another core task. Dradul reminds
tourists not to litter, drive on delicate grasslands, or leave waste. “In the past, the wetland
was full of garbage and had fewer wild animals,” Dradul recalled. Today, the wetland is
home to 411 plant species and 157 wildlife species—a remarkable level of biodiversity for
such a high-altitude area.
Yet, the work is far from easy. Climate change is a major threat: melting ice and
shifting rainfall patterns cause shoreline changes and grassland degradation. Human
activities also continue — some visitors still litter, bathe, or wash cars in the lake. With
nearly 99,000 hectares (公顷 ) of wetland and only 90 guardians, remote areas can’t be
patrolled daily.
In spite of these difficulties, Dradul remains hopeful. He dreams of Mapam Yumco
Lake staying pure forever. “This responsibility, though built on small daily efforts, must
be passed down. With sincerity and commitment, even the simplest actions can safeguard
the lake’s beauty for generations,” he emphasized.
24. What’s the original purpose of Dradul to work as a guardian
A.To earn a stable income. B.To help animals in need.
C.To protect a precious wetland. D.To seek a sense of purpose.
25. Which of the following can best describe Dradul’s job
A.Well-paid but dangerous. B.Relaxing and effective.
C.Challenging but worthwhile. D.Flexible and professional.
26. What does the underlined word “degradation” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Improvement. B.Expansion. C.Decline. D.Stability.
27. What can we learn from Dradul
A.Every cloud has a silver lining. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Chance favors the prepared mind. D.Small efforts make a big difference.

Researchers have studied changes to mealtimes(吃饭时间 ) in older adults. They
found that people experience gradual shifts (改变) as they age(变老), and these changes
may show important information about their health.
Lead researcher Hassan Dashti suggested that mealtime changes, especially in
breakfast, can be a simple sign of a person’s health. He said that doctors and patients
should use changes in mealtime routines as early warnings of hidden(隐藏的) physical or
mental problems. He also noted that keeping a regular (有规律的) eating schedule may
support healthy aging and longer life.
To explore this idea, the team studied 2,945 adults in the UK, aged 42 to 94, who
were followed for more than 20 years. They collected health data and blood samples (样
本 ) to see how the mealtime might relate to health problems. They found that as older
adults age, they tend to eat meals especially breakfast and dinner later during the day,
while also narrowing the overall time window in which they eat each day.
Later breakfast times were strongly related to some health problems such as extreme
sadness, low energy, poor sleep, and trouble preparing meals. People who ate later were
also more likely to have oral health problems. Most importantly, later breakfast was
connected with a higher risk of death. The researchers also found that people who were
naturally “night owls” (preferring later sleep and wake times) tended to eat meals at later
times.
“Up until now, we have had a limited (有限的 ) insight into how the mealtime
develops later in life and how this change relates to overall health and longevity,” said
Dashti. “Our findings help fill that gap by showing that later mealtimes, especially a later
breakfast, are tied to both health challenges and increased death risk in older adults. These
results add new meaning to the saying that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the
day’, especially for older adults.”
28.What did Dashti suggest about mealtime changes
A.They usually have no clear reasons.
B.They depend mainly on sleeping habits.
C.They can show signs of a person’s health.
D.They are common among young people.
29.What did the researchers find about older adults according to Paragraph 3
A.They have more food each day. B.They miss breakfast more often.
C.They take longer time over meals. D.They eat meals later during the day.
30.What can be inferred about people who eat breakfast late
A.They tend to live longer lives. B.They usually feel more energetic.
C.They are less likely to stay up. D.They may face some health problems.
31.Which word can best describe the results of the study
A.Disappointing. B.Uncertain. C.Helpful. D.Unexpected.

Reason can’t fully explain why people keep reaching for(伸手去够 ) their phones,
even when they know nothing important will happen. A new study suggests that a
biological explanation for why some people find it especially hard to put their phones
down — it involves dopamine(多巴胺), the brain’s “reward” chemical which plays a big
role in people’s addiction.(入迷).
Each time we check a message or see a new “like”(点赞), our brain receives a tiny
burst of dopamine. Over time, some people’s brains become highly sensitive to these small
rewards and start to “ask” for them more frequently. In these people, researchers report,
there seem to be more dopamine-releasing cells(细胞) in certain brain areas — meaning
that their brains may release dopamine more easily in response to digital signals, keeping
them dependent on checking their phones.
Dr. Karen Liu, a neuroscientist at Northbridge University, studied whether the brains
of heavy phone users differed in any way from those who used their phones less. She and
her team focused on a part of the brain linked to habit-forming behavior. Brain scans
showed that frequent phone checkers had stronger connections between this area and the
regions that process visual notifications, such as screen lights and message icons. “Their
brains seem to treat a phone notification as something that deserves immediate attention,”
Liu says.
“It’s an important piece of the puzzle in understanding modern habits,” says Dr.
Miguel Torres, a psychiatrist who treats patients with technology-related problems. Torres
believes that recognizing the brain’s role in these behaviors may reduce the shame some
people feel about their phone use and encourage them to seek help. He also suggests that
future treatments might include both counseling(咨询 ) and simple changes in phone
settings, such as limiting notifications, to help lower the brain’s repeated dopamine
response.
32.What plays the most important role in people’s addiction
A.A new “like”. B.A fancy phone.
C.A tiny chemical. D.A brain area.
33.What did Liu’s study mainly focus on according to paragraph 3
A.Number of apps. B.Brain areas for habits and notifications.
C.Eye damage from phones. D.Different phone screens.
34.According to Torres in the last paragraph, how might future treatments help heavy
phone users
A.Block smartphones completely. B.Replace phones with other devices.
C.Change phone settings. D.Delete all social media.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.Shame over phone use.
B.Bright screens attracting users.
C.Preventing teens’ phone use at school.
D.Brain explanation for phone checking(看手机).

How to Discover Your Talent
Talent tends to refer to that inborn skill that everyone seems to be born with. 36 .
Therefore, it’s good to try and identify and practice that skill.
Revisit your childhood. A good way to figure out where your talents lie is to go back
to your childhood. 37 . This is often the time when you had plans that weren’t limited
by what people tend to think of as “reality”.
Consider what it is that you do when you lose track of time. One of the chief things
you can do is focus on what you love to do so much that you have a tendency to forget
everything else for a while. 38 . Then you might have to research a bit deeper into the
things you enjoy to discover what makes you really feel satisfied.
39 . Sometimes, when you’re having difficulty seeing clearly, it’s good to get an
outside opinion. Your friends and family members know you well and they should be able
to offer you some insights into the areas they think you’re talented in.
Try new things. Especially if you’re not sure what your talents might be, you should
get out and try new things. This way you’re more likely to hit on what it is that you’re
really good at and that really makes you happy.
40 . In your quest for your own talent you should look into the talents of other
people.
A.Consider what you loved to do as a child.
B.Ask others for better advice.
C.You can use your talents in the service of kindness.
D.Focus on the areas that you’re less talented in.
E.Not all talents are going to be super obvious.

When my daughters reached third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to
walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small
friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy (松垂
的) ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy I had
ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.
She was not more than twelve weeks old. She had no identifying marks of any sort. I
didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the Lost and Found but I really
didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her
owners should have watched her more closely, I thought.
By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with
the girls. The following week something told me to check the Lost and Found section in
the local paper. One particular ad caught my attention and my heart sank. Someone was

searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. He sounded desperate. My hands shook.
I could not ask myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly put the paper aside and tried to
ignore it. I never said anything about it to the kids or my husband.
We named the puppy Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they
went outside, she was one step behind them. When they did housework, she was there to
help.
There was only one problem with this perfect dog: My conscience (良心) was
bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the
puppy the person was desperately looking for.

读后续写:
With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the phone. Secretly I was praying no one would
answer, but a woman did. As I described the dog to her in detail, her voice shook with
excitement and she wanted to come over right away. Within minutes I heard a vehicle stop at
the driveway and some footsteps stop at the door. Head cradled in my hands and heart
hammering, I had a thousand thoughts crossing my mind: I could pretend I wasn’t home or
tell her “I’m sorry you have the wrong address”. But it was too late. The bell rang and Molly
was barking.
Opening the door, I saw a woman with a little girl sitting in a small wheelchair. One
look at Molly, the little girl’s face lit up. “Here, Lucy,” she yelled. “Come here!” Molly
instantly obeyed, wagging her tail wildly. My heart sank. Seemingly sensing my feelings, the
woman explained that Lucy (Molly) was more than just a puppy to her daughter, who was left
crippled for life in an accident. “Lucy gave her a reason to live,” she choked. Suddenly I felt
relieved. As they pulled out of the drive, I smiled, knowing I had done the right thing—that
puppy was exactly where she belonged.
