From lively beer festivals to huge community cook-offs, Europe knows how to celebrate its food and drink.
And during the harvest season, which generally runs from mid-September to the end of October, autumn’s harvest
is the star of the show, with a series of festivals that mix seasonal ingredients and folk entertainment. Here are our
top picks.
Weimar Onion Market, Germany
Held from the second weekend to the end of October, the Onion Market in Weimar is this city’s oldest and
largest folk fair, dating back to 1653 and attracting some 300,000 visitors every year. With over 500 stands (摊位)
decorated with circles of onions and dried flowers, people can hang around and pick up slices of onion pie.
Impruneta Grape Festival, Italy
The small town of Impruneta celebrates the harvest with an annual festival, held for about a month around the
September vendemmia (grape harvest). It has dance workshops and theatre concerts, but the highlight is the
impressive parade (游行) that travels through the town’s central square for one day in late September.
Lovran Marunada Festival, Croatia
The Maruni chestnuts have a larger size and a unique, sweet flavour. Try them at the local Marunada Festival,
第 3页/共 12页
which marks the start of the chestnut harvest. Over the course of a week in October, visitors can dance to the folk
music with the locals while tasting chestnut-flavoured ice cream, cake and wine.
Beuvron-en-Auge Clder Festival, France
Beuvron-en-Auge grows about 60% of the nation’s bittersweet apples. For over 50 years, the pretty village of
Beuvron-en-Auge has marked the end of the apple harvest in mid-October with a two-day festival. Celebrations
take place on the historic market square and include apple-pressing workshops and applewine-tasting activities.

In 2022, I had just recovered from a serious illness when I received an invitation to a writers’ conference in
Orlando, Florida. My family persuaded me that a holiday might be good for me, so off I went.
After arriving in the Sunshine State, I was rather tired, but I managed to catch a taxi to my accommodation
and settle in. The next morning, I took another taxi to the shopping center to buy a few souvenirs. Later, I went to a
café to have lunch, but all the seats were taken. Then I heard a friendly voice saying, “You can share my table.”
I gratefully sat down with the old lady and we had a happy lunch together. As the meal drew to a close, she
asked how long I would be in Orlando. I had already told her that I hadn’t hired a car, and hadn’t realized how
expensive taking taxis would be. After a while she said, “My dear, don’t use any more taxis. I’m retired and it
would be my pleasure to drive you wherever you wish.” I told her that I couldn’t put her to that trouble, but she
ignored my protests (反 对 ). She asked me where I was staying and the next morning she was waiting at my
apartment at the appointed time to take me to the Disney World. She spent some time with me before leaving me to
explore alone. At the end of the day, she returned to take me back to my accommodation. I offered her money but
she refused to take any.
I’ll never forget that wonderful lady who, through her kindness, filled my brief holiday in Florida with
wonderful memories.

Putting food into the microwave for a couple of minutes may seem totally harmless, but Europe’s
quick-cooking ovens emit as much carbon as nearly 7 million cars, a new study has found, and the problem is
growing. Due to the fact that costs are falling and kitchen appliances (厨房电器) are becoming symbols of status,
owners are throwing many microwaves after an average of eight years. This is pushing rising sales of new
microwaves which are expected to reach 135 million annually in the EU by the end of the decade.
A study by the University of Manchester worked out the emissions of carbon dioxide — the main greenhouse
gas responsible for climate change — at every stage of microwaves, from production to waste disposal. “It is
electricity consumption by microwaves that has the biggest impact on the environment,” say the authors, who also
calculate that the emissions from using 19 microwaves over a year are the same as those from a car. According to
the same study, efforts to reduce consumption should focus on improving consumer awareness and behaviour to
use appliances more efficiently. For example, electricity consumption by microwaves can be reduced by adjusting
the time of cooking to the type of food.
However, David Reay, professor of carbon management argues that, although microwaves use a great deal of
第 5页/共 12页
energy, their emissions are minor compared to those from cars. In the UK alone and these emit way more than all
the emissions from microwaves in the EU. Backing this up, recent data show that passenger cars in the UK emitted
69m tonnes of CO in 2015. This is 10 times the amount this new microwave oven study estimates for annual
emissions for all the microwave ovens in the whole of the EU.
Further, the energy used by microwaves is lower than any other form of cooking. Among common kitchen
appliances used for cooking, microwaves are the most energy efficient, followed by a stove and finally a standard
oven. Thus, rising microwave sales could be seen as a positive thing.
8. What contributes to the increasing consumption of new microwaves
A. Various functions. B. More carbon emission.
C. Declining prices. D. Further improved quality.
9. What is the advice from the study by the University of Manchester
A. Changing microwave users’ habits.
B. Stopping using microwaves gradually.
C. Carrying out more research on microwaves.
D. Replacing microwaves with other appliances.
10. How is paragraph 3 developed
A. By giving definition. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By making comparison. D. By concluding viewpoints.
11. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Microwaves are probably not to blame.
B. Energy efficiency is not a top priority.
C. People should be talked into using microwaves less often.
D. Stoves consume the least energy among kitchen appliances.
D
Climate change leads to rising temperatures, rising sea level, and drought (干旱). However, its effects don’t
end there — it can also change the taste of food.
In southwestern Spain, black Iberian pigs (Pata Negra) look for oak acorns (橡子) under centuries-old oak
trees, a process key to the unique taste of Jamón Ibérico, a special cured ham (腌制火腿) made from these pigs.
However, according to National Geographic, more heat waves and a five-year drought have reduced the number of
the trees’ acorns as well as the grass around them. Without these natural food sources, the pigs require extra feed,
第 6页/共 12页
which changes the ham’s unique taste.
Drought also affects the taste of fruits. Watermelons, for example, show significant flavor changes in drought
conditions. According to researchers at the Agrifood Research and Technology Center of Aragon in Spain,
compounds (化合物) such as sugars build up during drought, changing the taste of fruits, either for better or for
worse.
Beyond drought, rising temperatures and sea level also influence food flavors. The warm day and cool night
help fruits develop the best flavor by increasing their sugar content and acidity (酸度). However, global warming is
changing this. For example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and drier because they bloom early
and grow in higher temperatures. Oysters, which do best in a mix of salt and freshwater, are losing their unique
taste because rising sea level is making their environment too salty.
While the food we eat is affected by climate change, our food choices also impact the climate. Meat and milk
products, especially from cows, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Raising animals for food
makes up about 14.5 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, similar to the emissions from all
vehicles combined. Producing animal protein (蛋白质) uses more land, energy and water than plant protein.
While this seems like a bad cycle, it can be broken. For example, The Good Food Institute, a US-based think
tank, believes people will choose alternative proteins if they are as tasty and affordable as meat. Meanwhile, more
farmers are practicing “greener” farming, and when people buy local, in-season produce, the impact on the
environment is reduced.
12. What has caused the change in the flavor of Jamón Ibérico
A. The use of other meat sources.
B. The lack of natural feed for the pigs.
C. The introduction of new curing techniques.
D. The change in pig feeding methods due to new technology.
13. How does drought affect the taste of fruits according to the passage
A. It decreases their acidity.
B. It adds to their water content.
C. It improves their natural flavor.
D. It changes their taste for better or worse.
14. What action can consumers take to fight climate change
A. Eating less processed food.
第 7页/共 12页
B. Buying local and in-season food.
C. Supporting traditional farming practices.
D. Choosing animal protein over plant protein.
15. What’s the best title for this passage
A. Shifts in Sea Level B. Droughts and Agriculture
C. Changes on Your Plate D. Greenhouse Gas Emissions

When the night fell, James, a middle school student in London, dragged his tired body home.In order to save
money to buy himself a new bike, he had been working at a restaurant for over a month during the summer
vacation. He had already earned some money. With one more week, he would have his dream bike.
Entering the room, James found his younger brother Adam sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy
expression on his face.James stared at Adam confusedly.
“Sorry.I did something wrong,” Adam said, on the verge of tears.
“What’s the matter with you ” James asked.
“This afternoon I went to play football on the road outside the house and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr.
Black’s car.I was so scared and I hurried home in panic without telling him,” Adam said, full of guilt.
“Is the car seriously damaged ” James couldn’t wait to continue asking.
“The ball hit the car back and the tail light got broken,” Adam said in a low voice.
“It’s truly your fault. It’s really dangerous to play football on the road. What’s worse, you shouldn’t have
come back without telling Mr. Black about it. You are such a naughty boy,” James raised his voice. Hearing this,
Adam lowered his head and bit his lips hard. James added, “Anyway, it’s never too late to mend.I’11 take you to
his house tomorrow to apologize. Now it’s time to sleep.”
When Adam went bed, James couldn’t go to sleep himself. Father always told him to be honest, to be a boy
admired by the people and to be an example of his brother. He was sorry for his brother’s behavior. He shouldn’t
have blamed his brother after he did something wrong. But he could understand him. Anyway, Adam was only a
boy of seven and what had happened really scared him. But as his elder brother, he should pay for it though this
might delay his plan of having the bike. “Nothing serious. At worst, I can take more summer jobs,” he said to
himself.
