When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends told me 1 that they would visit England for the first time. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find a good place to stay. I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of house gives a foreign visitor a good 2 to speak English with the family. My friends listened to me, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “Because we 3 most house owners were away on holiday.”
I thought this was 4 . Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke 5 English, and they thought “vacancies(空房)” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. But when we got there, we found that these houses were all 6 . As a result, we had to stay at hotels!”
We also laughed about the 7 my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “diversion” means " 8 ”. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “diversion” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have a good time.
English people have problems too 9 they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee was 10 ! Later I found out that “Thank you" in French means “No, thank you.”

Could people dig a hole all the way through the earth Some people joke about being able to dig to China from Australia on the other side of the world. It’s true that Chinese scientists are digging deep to study the center of the earth!
Earlier on May 30, 2023, China started drilling(钻)its first over 10,000-meter-deep borehole(钻井) in Xinjiang.By Oct 1, 2023, the hole was already 7,856 meters deep. The borehole had a planned depth of 11,100meters. When it was finished in February 2025, it became the deepest hole with 10,910 meters ever dug in China and the second deepest in the world (The world’s deepest man-made hole, the Kola Superdeep Hole in Russia is12,262 meters deep). It took one year and nine months to complete the digging project.
Sun Jinsheng, a scientist in China, said the hole was very difficult to dig. “The difficulty of the digging project can be compared toa big truck driving on two thin steel cables(钢丝),”he said. The drill goes through more than ten layers (层) of rock. The oldest layer is about 145 million years old. The earth has lots of heat inside. So as the drill goes deeper, it faces hotter and hotter temperatures. The metal drill could get so hot that it would become as soft as noodles. The company dealt with this problem by using high-tech tools, such as heat-resistant(耐热的) drills.
China’s National Petroleum Corp is the company leading the project. It said the hole would provide useful information about deep underground areas, which can help scientists learn what happens inside our planet. The hole was dug in an area rich in oil. The oil could be used to heat buildings and make fuel(燃料) for cars and planes. It’s important to look deep into the earth because it could help in finding energy resources. It could also help scientists study the risks of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions(火山爆发).
16.What can the oil in the hole be used for
①Helping in making planes ②Heating buildings
③Studying the risks of natural disasters ④Making fuel for cars
A.①② B.②④ C.③④ D.①④
17.How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraph 3
A.By having a discussion. B.By reporting a result.
C.By making a comparison. D. By listing numbers.
18.What do we know about the hole in Xinjiang according to the passage
A. It’s the world’s deepest man-made hole. B.It might mean a lot to the scientific study.
C.The deeper it is the more oil we’ll get. D.It hasn’t been finished digging yet.
19.Which is the right structure of the passage (①=Paragraph 1②=Paragraph 2,...)
20.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage
A.To explain what happens inside the earth. B.To praise how China develops in drilling.
C. To spread high technology tools for drilling. D.To introduce China’s deep borehole project.

How Modern Life Changes Culture
Culture is not fixed. It changes over time, and modern life is one of the main reasons. Today, technology, social media(媒体), and globalization are changing the way we live, think, and communicate. Young people can watch movies from other countries, listen to international music, and even follow fashion online. In addition, cultural festivals and international events are now more available thanks to online platforms, allowing people to experience other cultures without leaving their homes.
Social media, in particular, has a big effect on culture. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube allow teenagers to share videos, photos, and ideas with people around the world. This can make cultural fashion spread very quickly. While this can be exciting, it also means that traditional customs and local cultures may be forgotten if people focus only on global fashion. Moreover, some people worry that excessive online influence may make young people accept foreign habits without understanding their basis.
Even so, modern influences are not always negative. They can help people understand and enjoy other cultures. By learning about different countries through technology and media, young people can develop more open minds and respect for diversity. At the same time, they can mix traditional and modern ideas to create new ways of celebrating culture. For instance, some schools now combine local festivals with global online fashion, making celebrations more attractive and educational.
In this way, modern life shapes(塑造) culture in an energetic way, showing that the past and the present can exist together, influencing who we are today. It reminds us that culture is constantly evolving(逐渐发展), and we all play a part in shaping it.

In August, the gaming world celebrated the arrival of Black Myth: Wukong. China’s first AAA game caught the attention of people around the world right away. Some praise the game’s fresh take(演绎) on Sun Wukong, the most famous Chinese “superhero”. Others are attracted by the 36 beautiful scenic spots in the game. They are based on real-life places across the country. Twenty-seven of them are in Shanxi Province.
For a long time, Shanxi’s historic sites weren’t very famous. Few people knew that most of its ancient temples and sculptures are still complete. In fact, 70 percent of Chinese buildings before the Yuan Dynasty that still stand today are in Shanxi. Its collection of cultural relics is as rich as any other in the country. The main reason behind this treasure house of ancient architecture is like a double-edged sword(双刃剑). Shanxi’s endless mountain ranges once made travel difficult. On the one hand, they slowed the province’s development for a long time, but on the other hand, they protected its relics from harm.
Now, thanks to the success of Black Myth: Wukong, many are rediscovering Shanxi. Among the top destinations are the Yungang Grottoes, one of the largest grottoes in China. This World Heritage Site is special for its mix of Chinese and Western styles. It is a fine example of ancient China’s contact with other civilizations(文明). You can also visit the Yuhuang Temple. The small temple is hidden in a village and hard to find. Inside, you’ll discover coloured statues of the 28 Mansions(星宿) from the Song Dynasty. Or you can visit the Xiaoxitian Temple. Most of its structures were built during the late Ming Dynasty.
41. What does “them” in the first paragraph refer to (2分)

The Importance of Controlling a Healthy Weight
With the start of the national “Weight Management Year” plan, “weight management” has become a hot topic on social media. Keeping a healthy weight is really important. It helps us stay active, full of energy and away from illness.
I used to eat much junk food and seldom exercised, so I often felt tired. Later I kept a balanced diet and ran after class, and I became much healthier. Now our school holds sports meetings and offers healthy lunch to help us.
I think we should say no to sweet snacks and exercise for at least half an hour every day. Only in this way can we keep fit and study better.
