A 13-year-old American boy has become the first person ever to beat the popular video game Tetris (俄罗斯方块). The young gamer, Willis Gibson, completed 157 levels before the game technically gave in. Gamers call this kind of ending a “kill screen”. The Tetris program had no more plays to make and so it crashed, freezing the video game.
Gibson lives in Oklahoma and goes by the gaming name “Blue Scuti”. He repeatedly shouted “Oh my God” as he beat the game. “I can’t feel my fingers,” Gibson said.
Gaming experts had long considered Tetris unbeatable. It came out in 1984 and quickly became a worldwide favorite. Its creator, Alexey Pajitnov, was a computer engineer at the Russian Academy of Sciences. During the game, players move and join together seven different shapes of falling blocks. The goal is for players to fit the blocks together to form solid lines. The blocks fall faster as players progress through higher levels.
Gibson reached level 157 and dropped a final piece into place. This caused a single line of blocks to disappear and the game to enter a permanent (永久的) freeze. “This is staggering,” Vince Clemente, CEO of Classic Tetris World Championship, said. “Developers didn’t think anyone would ever make it that far and now the game has been beaten by a human being.”
Other fans of the game were quick to share Gibson’s excitement. Tetris chief executive Maya Rogers joined in the celebration. She said that it was fitting Gibson had beaten the game just ahead of 2024, when Tetris was entering its 40th anniversary. “Congratulations to ‘Blue Scuti’,” Rogers said. She added that the event broke any known limits of the game.
24. What do we know about Gibson
A. He got injured while playing Tetris. B. He thought it was not easy to beat Tetris.
C. He owed his great success to good luck. D. He planned to challenge gaming experts.
25. What had gaming experts thought of Tetris before Gibson beat it
A. It was designed for teenagers. B. It sometimes showed a “kill screen”.
C. It couldn’t be beaten by humans. D. It was the first video game in the world.
26. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Unbelievable. B. Unreasonable. C. Impossible. D. Unacceptable.
27. What is the best title for this text
A. Tetris, a Popular Video Game. B. Tetris Needs Further Programming.
C. Gibson, a Talented Game Player. D. A US Teen Becomes the First Human to Beat Tetris.

Pollination (授粉) is important for the reproduction of many plants. Some rely on the wind or water for pollination, but most depend on animals to serve as the pollinators. Insects like bees, moths, and beetles also serve as the pollinators, helping with this process.
Unfortunately, the worldwide spread of light pollution may be affecting the important interactions (相互作用) between plants and insects, causing bad consequences for both natural areas and agricultural lands.
A team of scientists in Switzerland recently studied how the complex interactions between plants and pollinators were affected by artificial light at night. By setting up several grasslands with LED street lamps, the scientists were able to compare the differences.
Focusing on cabbage thistle, a type of plants, the researchers counted 62% fewer insect visits to the lit grasslands. They also noted 29% fewer pollinators than the ones in the uncontrolled lands, which resulted in 13% fewer fruits on the cabbage thistle plants they were studying.
Based on the fact that there was reduced fruit production in the controlled lands, the scientists found that the pollinators who worked during the day were not able to make up for the reduced activity of the pollinators at night. Additionally, there seemed to be the potential for a very negative effect, because many of the plants some insects are helping to pollinate are the most important sources of food for them.
Artificial light affects pollination, and thus fruit production, in two different, but connected ways, according to a scientist from California. Imagine a moth flying into a light at night — the first way is by misdirecting pollinators. The second way is by confusing the sense of time of plants. Besides, plants and insects respond to varying wavelengths of light differently. More research is needed to understand the complex interactions between plants, pollinators, and different types of light.
“The annually increasing man made light improves humans’ life. It causes bad consequences for the environment, however. We can never base our life on the loss of the environment,” says Knop, lead author of the study.
28. According to the passage, the first paragraph is used to ________.
A. put forward a problem B. present background information
C. inform the purpose of the study D. introduce the subjects to be studied
29. According to the study, the plants under the artificial light ________.
A. stopped bearing fruits in the end B. failed to be pollinated
C. were visited by fewer insects D. were more attractive to pollinators
30. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. The starvation of insects. B. The loss of pollination.
C. The reduced fruit production. D. The death of some plants.
31. What can we learn from Paragraph 6
A. Misdirected insects confuse plants’ sense of time.
B. Pollination and fruit production are related in two ways.
C. The different effects of varying light on pollination are clear.
D. Artificial light affects plants’ pollination and sense of time.

Nowadays generative (生成的) AI tools like ChatGPT are flooding into schools, promising to transform learning. But in a recent study, researchers uncovered a hidden danger: the better these tools perform, the more they might drop students’ ability to think by themselves.
Nearly 1,000 students from grade 9 to 11 in Turkey joined the study. They were divided into three groups: one with no AI access (使用权) — the control group, one using ChatGPT, and one using GPT Tutor — an improved AI tutor designed by teachers which gave guidance instead of answers and included fixes for common mistakes. Over four weeks, students used these tools during practice periods, and then were followed by exams without AI help.
During practice periods, students using the ChatGPT scored 48% higher than those without AI. Those using the improved GPT Tutor scored 127% higher. However, in exams without AI, ChatGPT users performed 17% worse than the control group. GPT Tutor users, on the other hand, did just as well as students who never used AI. This shows that while AI can better shortterm performance, poorly designed tools might hurt real learning.
Researchers found that students using ChatGPT often asked for direct answers instead of trying to solve problems themselves. About 31% of their messages were simple requests like, “What’s the’answer ” In comparison, GPT Tutor users spent more time asking for guidance or explaining their details. The safeguards in GPT Tutor — like detailed guidance — helped students think critically. Without these features, ChatGPT acted like a “crutch”, making students less prepared for their own homework.
Surveys also showed another fact. ChatGPT users felt confident about their exam performance, even though their scores dropped. GPT Tutor users believed they learned more, even though their exam results were similar to the control group. This suggests that AI tools might create false confidence if not carefully designed.
In short, generative AI has great promise in education, but its design matters. Tools built with teacher expertise and focus on problem-solving can help students learn. Those that prioritize speed over understanding might do more harm than good.
32. Which aspect of generative AI tools does the new research focus on
A. Its advancement. B. Its accuracy. C. Its flexibility. D. Its influence.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Experimental design. B. Study results. C. Research background. D. Tool functions.
34. Which request is a student using GPT Tutor likely to make
A. Grade the monthly test paper quickly. B. Provide the best title of my composition.
C. Walk me through this problem step by step. D. Translate the following sentence into Chinese.
35. What do the surveys concerning AI tools present in paragraph 5
A. A misunderstanding of the product design contents.
B. A mismatch between student beliefs and actual results.
C. Confidence is directly affected by complexity of AI tools.
D. Scores differ between ChatGPT users and the control group.

Zena was always the quiet girl in the corner of her senior one classroom. She seldom spoke, avoided looking at others, and spent most of her free time hiding behind her books. The only thing that made her feel happy was her old guitar, a gift from her grandpa who had passed away. Every night, after finishing her homework, she would lock herself in her room and play, letting the soft strings (琴弦) drive away the loneliness in her heart. She never played in front of anyone — she was afraid that others would judge her, laughing at her mistakes, or that she would stand out too much. Only her best friend Mia knew this little music secret of hers, having accidentally heard Zena play one evening. So her music remained a well-kept secret to others, one she didn’t have the courage to share with the world.
One day, her class announced a school talent show. Hearing the news, Zena felt excited at first but then decided to give up because she was shy and afraid. But her best friend Mia begged her to join in. “You play so well, Zena,” Mia said. “Why keep your music to yourself Everyone should hear how nice it is.” Zena shook her head quickly. “I can’t. What if I do not perform well What if everyone laughs at me ” But Mia didn’t give up. She visited Zena every day, and encouraged her to try. Little by little, Zena began to change — maybe, she could have a try.
The weeks before the talent show, Zena was full of worry but she worked hard. She practiced for hours every day; her fingers hurt from pressing the strings, and she felt nervous all the time. There were moments when she wanted to give up, thinking her playing would never be good enough. But Mia was always there to cheer her on, and she remembered her grandpa’s smile. He once told her that music was a gift to share, not to hide, and she wanted to make him proud.
