When Arvin Kuipers, who graduated from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 2017 and loves Chinese culture, asks his patients to stick out their tongue so he can diagnose (诊断) their illness, many are confused.
Kuipers, 30, practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, said, “In TCM I need to do face and tongue diagnosis. That's strange for people in my country.” One elderly woman had been visiting him occasionally for advice, but her first experience with TCM surprised her.She had never experienced acupuncture (针灸) or any other TCM treatment.“She came in, and I examined her face and tongue,” said Kuipers.“I told the patient her kidneys were not doing well and that she wasn't getting proper sleep.” The woman was shocked by his insight and asked if he had been spying on her.“Actually, it was easy to diagnose her condition when I saw the dark rings under her eyes. Her energy levels were also very low at the time.”
Kuipers opened his TCM clinic in September. Most of his work involves performing acupuncture, cupping as well as tuina — a TCM massage that patients in the West like the most, he said.In some cases, he also gave his patients traditional herbal medicines.
Kuipers usually makes a cup of Chinese tea to calm his patients if they are nervous about the acupuncture needles. He also explains to them the meridian (经络) system, which is a central concept of TCM, yin and yang, and other concepts.“In TCM, good health requires balanced yin and yang, so practitioners not only pay attention to a patient's illness, but also to his or her overall physical condition,” said Kuipers.“TCM is also a different culture and offers a new perspective, instead of being a curing method.”
As of early April, Kuipers has treated more than 200 patients, many of whom come to his clinic every week.“TCM does work, and works well.My patients really feel better with it, so I value it, and when my patients feel better I also feel better.”

The Chinese old saying “good medicine tastes bitter” may no longer hold in the country where it was born and believed.
Xi Linjie, a 20 year old college student, sought help for tiredness at a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital in Chongqing and was pleasantly surprised by a cup of sweet milk tea.“The milk tea is filled with TCM ingredients, yet it tastes delightful. It's less sweet than regular milk tea and has a slight herbal fragrance (香味),” she says.“Most importantly, it's beneficial to health.”
This new milk tea is invented by the nutrition department of Chongqing Jiangbei Hospital of TCM.Since 2023, the hospital has mixed TCM processing techniques with contemporary food production to attract younger generation.“Milk tea is a favorite among young people. We hope it can act as a bridge for them to gain more knowledge about TCM and gradually accept it,” says Liao Changying, director of the hospital's nutrition department. She notes that almost everyone who tried the milk tea shared the special experience with their family and friends.
The hospital has employed various modern technologies to maximize (最大化) the effect of TCM while improving the taste.“Behind the TCM milk tea are numerous experiments and improvements. It represents the integration of TCM, modern medicine, nutrition and more. Our goal is to help people prevent and manage diseases while enjoying delicious food and drinks,” Liao explains. The TCM milk tea proves how traditional medicine is appealing to the younger generation in an approachable manner.
Liao is pleased to see many young visitors seeking professional health advice on physical conditioning.“Over half of the visitors are young people interested in health consultations (咨询) for body conditioning, which indicates that the younger generation has confidence in TCM,” Liao says. She also suggested that more efforts should be made to integrate TCM with other fields that interest young people, adding, “TCM is becoming a new trend among the youth.”

Scientists have developed a trailblazing 3D printed device that could speed up patient access to new medicines without the need for animal testing.Thousands of animals are used in the early stages of developing medicines worldwide every year, yet many drugs tested on animals do not end up showing any clinical benefit.
Now researchers at the University of Edinburgh have designed a “body on chip” that perfectly copy how a medicine flows through a patient's body. The plastic device means scientists can test drugs to see how different organs react without the need for live animal testing. The device is the first of its kind in the world.Made using a 3D printer, the chip's five compartments (隔层) look like the human heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and brain. They are connected by channels that resemble the human circulatory system, through which new drugs can be pumped (灌输).
The plastic device uses PET scanning to produce detailed 3D images showing what is going on inside the tiny organs.“The PET imagery is what allows us to ensure the flow of new drugs being tested is even,” said Liam Carr, the inventor of the device.
PET scanning involves injecting tiny amounts of radioactive compounds into the chip to transmit signals to an extremely sensitive camera, allowing scientists to better assess the effect of new drugs.
Carr said, “The platform is completely flexible and can be a valuable tool to investigate various human diseases, such as cancer and immune diseases. For example, we could have a fatty liver disease model in the device and use this to see how having a diseased liver affects other organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, etc.,and could even combine multiple diseased cell models to see how diseases can influence each other.”
Carr's supervisor, Dr Adriana Tavares, said linking five organs together on one device would help scientists effectively study how a new drug might affect a patient's whole body.
12.What does the underlined word “trailblazing” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Economical. B.Pioneering.
C.Beneficial. D.Portable.
13.What can we know about the “body on chip”?
A.It helps a drug flow through the organs.
B.It enables a drug to be quickly absorbed.
C.It creates a realistic human body structure.
D.It is the world's first 3D printed metal chip.
14.What is implied in Carr's words
A.PET scanning traces the drug distribution.
B.A sensitive camera is inserted into the chip.
C.A fatty liver disease model disturbs the chip.
D.Diseased cell models are observed separately.
15.What is the most suitable title for the text
A.3D printed device is used for developing drugs
B.Plastic chip makes new drugs more affordable
C.Body on chip replaces animals in drug testing
D.3D printed device can make some human organs

Jenny had hearing problems when she was four years old.Several surgeries later, Jenny was found having a severe joint disease at seven. She could not put pressure on the back parts of her feet, so she walked on tiptoe (脚尖), and when the pain became unbearable, someone had to carry her.Once when she suddenly experienced sharp pain, her friends got her up and carried her from class to class.
All through grade school, and on into high school, Jenny suffered, yet never complained. She took her medicine and wrapped her feet in steaming towels until the pain eased. As soon as she could bear the pain Jenny immediately carried on, as though she was free of pain. She always wore a smile on her face and expressed her love for others.
Jenny had never been a cheerleader or competed in a sport. She could not even take part in a gym class, though she took the same health class four years in a row, through which she could pass with a substitute credit each year.
Jenny continued to have one surgery after another on her ears all through school. Her hearing improved and she taught herself to read lips. She also carried a pillow (枕头) to school so that she could relieve the pain when she sat down.Gradually, Jenny began attending every football game, cheering the team on.
Then came her senior year. She saw documents about scholarships on the school website when visiting it one day.According to the statement, she would be considered for scholarships; however, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award and losing out.She continued to read other notices and found an ad from the football team, which stated that the football manager was seeking for an assistant, who would take on ancillary (辅助的) services like taking charge of the team's supplies communication and security.

第二节
参考范文:
Jenny decided to seize the chance. The football manager turned her down at first considering her health condition. After that, she began to persuade the manager, begging and promising.Impressed by her persistence, he finally gave in with the warning “If you miss ONE game, you're out!” Jenny nodded in excitement. Before each game, Jenny could be seen carrying big buckets of water to her teammates, with her pillow under the arm.She helped bandage knees, massaged backs and gave pep talks. She was continually at their beck and call, and it turned out to be one of the best years for the team in its history.
When asked why the team did so well that year, a player spoke of Jenny.“When we're knocked down and can't move, we look up and see Jenny struggling across the field, dragging her buckets and carrying her pillow. It makes anything the rest of us suffer seem insignificant. We feel we have no excuse not to work hard,” he recalled. Finally, Jenny gained recognition and respect that she totally deserved, and she received a number of scholarships. Her favorite scholarship, however, was a small one from a sports club, because she thought it was of special and considerable significance to her.
