Before arriving in China in 2023, I had read various books relating to China, and the seeds of my fascination were sown.
Therefore, when I arrived, I couldn't have been more excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. The food, the landmarks, the mega cities and everyday life — I couldn't wait to explore.
Yet despite my enthusiasm, learning Chinese hadn't even entered my mind. This wasn't ignorance or laziness, but rather fear at the prospect of attempting to learn what is regarded as the most difficult language in the world.Besides this, I was living in Shanghai, an international city, with many people speaking English as a second language — I decided English would be OK.
However, after a year in China I began to observe that while many foreigners did not speak Chinese, there were plenty who did.Perhaps it was achievable after all.In addition, I felt uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could speak English and yet I couldn't even speak the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn't start earlier.
Learning to speak Chinese isn't as insurmountable as I once assumed. When I speak to native Chinese speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me.I have also found it was not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed.I can't always understand what's been said.
My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it's not only doable but can also be enjoyable.Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but also deepened my cultural understanding of such a diverse and fascinating country. So, to all my non-Chinese friends I say this, embrace the challenge and take the leap of faith.
4.Why didn't the author learn Chinese when he arrived in China in 2023
A.He showed no enthusiasm for China.
B.He was unwilling to make the effort.
C.He resisted learning a second language.
D.He avoided doing something difficult.
5.What caused the author to learn Chinese

B.Support from many foreigners around him.
C.Eagerness to rise to the challenge.
D.A thirst to prove his gift for language.
6.What does the underlined word “insurmountable” in the 5th paragraph mean
A.Valueless. B.Difficult.
C.Unnecessary. D.Unacceptable.
7.What can we learn from the author's experience
A.Love breaks down barriers.
B.Hard work pays off.
C.Persistence is the key to success.
D.Bravery opens up a new world.
C
New words emerge in English all the time.In fact, in recent years more new words and phrases are entering the language than ever before, partly due to the increased willingness of lexicographers (词典编纂者) to include them in the dictionaries.
John Algeo who studies the history of language says, “As our culture changes, the language changes.American culture is going through a time of rapid change.”
Technology is moving fast, which has a big effect on language. The computer world produces hundreds of new words.New terms also come from business, medicine, and other fields.
Many new English words come from other languages.David Jost helps create the American Heritage Dictionary.“We constantly borrow words from other cultures,” he says.“This will go on forever in cultures.”
“People in many parts of the world speak English now. That is another reason why so many new words are entering the language,” says Algeo.
The American Dialect Society has a contest each year. The society selects a “new word of the year”, which gains high level of popularity on media for some days. One of the winners was “information superhighway”, referring to a whole set of electronic network of information and people getting access to this network by computer.
New words often come in several forms, such as the back-formation (like enthuse from enthusiasm), the clipping (like zoo from zoological garden), and the compounding, etc.Over time, one form tends to win out.Take the compounding for instance.“Domestic_partners” has been growing popular lately, even though many terms have been used to describe couples who live together but are not married.
“A new word rarely can be traced to one source,” says Algeo.“Several people tend to create a new word when a need for one exists.”
“Most new words have a limited life ‘span’,” say language experts.Only a few will survive through the next 100 years.
8.What might have least effect on English language

Texting and emailing have become a key part of how we communicate in our lives, so much that it's fundamentally changing language and communication.According to linguist McCulloch, it's making us better writers, speakers, and communicators.
“Language is humanity's most impressive open-source project,” writes McCulloch, who studies and analyzes the patterns of Internet language.“Just as we find things on the Internet by following links from one place to another, language spreads through our conversations and interactions.”
From words and acronyms (like AIDS) to emojis and GIFs, people today have a wide range of ways to express online what they're thinking and feeling, which can be more effective than pure words. If you're meeting a friend for happy hour, sending a GIF of Betty White swirling (旋转) a glass of wine can often show your excitement better than words can.Hate Mondays Posting a meme of Grumpy Cat can instantly convey your mood. Those fluent in Internet-speak can also play with punctuation, capitalization, even spacing to convey emotional state and tone of voice.Words can now be altogether replaced with emblems (图案) and icons, which helps explain the popularity of emojis and GIFs in our online conversations.
All of this helps make our social interactions more interesting, and the fluidity (不稳定性) of language is actually its biggest strength.“I mean, fashion can change, why can't language?” asks McCulloch.“In fact, language has changed and is always changing.Linguists are generally very positive about language evolution. There's not one right way to communicate. We don't speak the way Shakespeare did, and Shakespeare didn't speak the way Chaucer did.But it's unfortunate that this message hasn't been conveyed to broader society as much because we're still dealing with a history of people worshipping Latin.”
12.What's McCulloch's attitude towards Internet language
A.Cautious. B.Skeptical.
C.Favourable. D.Indifferent.
13.Why does the author mention “Betty White” and “Grumpy Cat” in paragraph 3
A.To explain a rule. B.To clarify a point.
C.To present a fact. D.To make a prediction.
14.What does McCulloch say about language
A.It should be more flexible. B.It is stable.
C.It defines communication. D.It is dynamic.
15.What does the author want to convey in the text
A.Texting and emailing are signs of an evolving language.
B.The fluidity of language makes communication difficult.
C.The use of Internet language is constantly declining.
D.People tend to communicate differently as they age.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
One of the many lessons we should learn is the importance of social interaction, and the negative effects on social isolation. And even outside of our close relationships with friends and family, weak social ties are also necessary to our sense of well-being.I know how easy it is to close yourself off from interactions from strangers.__16__
Recent research shows that even weak social interactions — like a quick exchange with a stranger on the sidewalk — contribute positively to our well-being.It is easy to live life with your head down, avoiding the far ends of your social network, like classmates you never chat with or neighbors whose names you don't remember.__17__ But by avoiding such tiny interactions, you could be robbing yourself of potential happiness.
Take a look at your social network.Think about your favorite coffee shop, your grocery store, your gym — every day we cross paths with some of the same people.__18__ Then you're no longer strangers, and now have mutual familiarity.
__19__ Consider taking out your ear buds, shifting your gaze from your phone, and smiling at others. You might start identifying familiar faces to introduce yourself to later, you might be making yourself available to someone who needs directions, or you might simply feel less lonely from a small wave or nod from a stranger.
Don't be disturbing.__20__ Don't force conversation with someone who clearly wants to be alone. If you are concerned that your small talk is making the other person feel in danger, listen to that instinct. However, if what's holding you back is a fear of awkwardness or embarrassment, then push yourself to beat that anxiety.
A.Look up, literally!
B.Respect people's boundaries.
C.You may not regard your life as lacking.
D.Do you want to avoid unwanted interactions
E.Take the brave first step to introduce yourself.
F.Sadly, you have to think through the positive effects of conversations.
G.However, building tiny relationships with some acquaintances has a powerful impact.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn't sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and catch one piece of paper from the glass on which was the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support each other over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a competition to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder (胭脂). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend. I quickly joined in: “How terrible”. I heard myself saying “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift My grandmother wouldn't even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.
注意:1.续写词数应150个左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. ________________________________________________________________

第二节
参考范文:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. I rushed up to her and asked what was wrong. Seeing my worried look, Janet quietly said she had heard what I said about the powder. She went on explaining that she was my secret friend and would like to give me something special. She went to the flea market and saw the powder that she thought would be fancy. She had hoped I could like the gift, but it ended up embarrassing me instead. Instantly I realized that I should apologize.
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I sincerely told Janet that I didn't mean what I said. I knew deep down that she just wanted to make me happy with her gift and I told her I understood. She really looked relieved after hearing my comforting explanation. Although the powder may not be what I wished, it was a thoughtful present that I knew Janet had tried her best to find. From then on, I appreciate any present I get even if it was not something I was expecting. All that matters is the thought behind it.
