For most of us, the Arctic (北极地区) and the Antarctic (南极地区) are very far places. The Arctic is the most
northern part of the earth and it is the area around the North Pole. The Antarctic is the most southern part of the
earth and it is the area around the South Pole. Both of the places have a lot in common, but they are also different in
many ways.
Weather
Both places are very, very cold. Both of them are covered with ice. Much of the ice there never melts (融化).
You may be surprised to know there are not many snowstorms in either place. Small pieces of ice blow around and
look like falling snow.
What is under the ice
One very big difference is what is under the ice. Water is under most of the ice in the Arctic. Land (陆地) is
under most of the ice in the Antarctic. The Antarctic is a large continent (大陆). It has plains (平原), valleys and
mountains. They are covered with ice.
Plants
The Arctic is warmer than the Antarctic. Small plants grow in the Arctic in summer. The Antarctic has almost
no plants, because it is too cold. A few small plants grow there each summer.
Animals
Animals live in both places. Polar bears live in the Arctic. Some foxes and wolves live there, too. Most

animals that can live in both places, such as whales.

that nobody lives there for long. Scientists who study the Antarctic stay there while they are working. They live in

B. To help scientists learn more about the Arctic and the Antarctic.
C. To tell us the Arctic has a lot in common with the Antarctic.
D. To describe the similarities and differences between the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Recently, I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,”
she replied.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note I who cannot
see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much
more beauty must be found by sight And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of
my eyes for just three days.
On the first day, I should want to see the people who have made my life worth living and the books which
have been read to me. In the afternoon, I should take a walk in the woods and admire the beauties of nature. That
night, I should not be able to sleep.
On my second day, I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of man
through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies.
The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At
midnight permanent (永久的) night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.

例文:
My Experience of Overcoming Difficulties
Life is full of challenges, and I once met a significant difficulty in learning plex problems often left
me confused, and I nearly gave up, feeling like a failure.
Instead of quitting, I sought support from my teacher and classmates. They patiently explained concepts and
offered practice problems. I also spent extra time studying, challenging myself daily. Gradually, I began to
understand and solve problems independently.
This experience taught me that perseverance and support are key to overcoming difficulties. I learned not to
fear challenges but to face them bravely, making my journey meaningful.
