There is one mysterious painting in the world:The Lute Player(《鲁特琴演奏者》)by the Italian
painter Caravaggio. It has three very similar versions(版本 ), and most people cannot tell the
differences between them.
To art experts, there has been agreement that the paintings held by Russia's Hermitage Museum
and France's Wildenstein Collection were created by the artist, while the one at Britain's
Badminton House is a copy.
Artificial intelligence(AI) begged to differ. In September 2025, Swiss AI company Art
Recognition said there's an almost 86 percent chance that Badminton House's painting is real,
while Wildenstein's one is likely a copy.
This case shows the new role that AI plays in authenticating(鉴定) art. In the past, it was up to
human experts to decide if a painting was real. They tell real artworks apart from copies using
their deep knowledge of artists and modern technologies such as infrared imaging(红外成像).
Now, AI might serve as another cool tool in experts' toolboxes. The technology can study small
details in artworks. It then compares these details with real works by the same artist to find
differences that experts and other scientific methods might miss.
However, many experts don't fully trust AI for identifying(识别) real art. They pointed out that AI
can give results without explaining how it reached them. Also, proper training on AI can require
thousands of images, but few artists have produced that many works. Artists may also change their
style suddenly, so AI that only looks for fixed patterns can easily make mistakes.
As art is subjective(主观的 )by nature, neither AI nor humans can be completely certain about
their judgments. AI should be used together with other methods, not to give final answers. "I

strongly believe that the future of art authentication lies in the collaboration(合作)between AI and
experts." Art Recognition's CEO Carina Popovici told ART news.
32. What do we know about the three paintings of The Lute Player
A.They are kept in the same museum.
B. They look much like each other.
C. They were created by different artists. D. They show different painting styles.
33. What does the first sentence in Paragraph 3 mean
A. AI is there to help.
B. AI tells the truth.
C. AI agrees with experts.
D. AI disagrees with experts.
34. According to the passage, what advantage does AI have over human experts in art
authentication
A. It can find small details that humans might miss.
B. It can work on its own without human help.
C. It can clearly explain the reasons for its results.
D. It works well even when artists change their style.
35. What is Carina Popovici's opinion of AI's role in art authentication
A. AI may someday replace human experts.
B. AI can be a great help to human experts.
C. AI should be used to give final judgment on art.
D. AI makes better judgments than human experts.

Scientists at University College London(UCL) have found special genes that help keep hearing
healthy. They made this discovery by studying fruit flies. This finding might help doctors create
treatments for hearing loss in older people.
Around the world, one in three people over 65 years old have trouble hearing. Scientists know of
more than 150 genes that might affect hearing, but they don't agree on how to use this knowledge
to help patients.
In their study, published in Scientific Reports, UCL researchers tested fruit flies' hearing
throughout their lives(about 70 days) to see if their hearing gets worse as they get older.
Fruit flies' ears are very much like human ears at the molecular level. This makes them perfect for
studying human hearing problems.
The researchers found that fruit flies also suffer from age-related hearing loss.Their sensitive
hearing began to drop after 50 days of age. This made the team look for genes that kept the flies'
ears healthy for the first 50 days.
After careful study, they found a new group of control genes called homeostasis genes. These
genes help the ear pick up sounds and stay sensitive. Using this knowledge, scientists changed
these genes and stopped the flies from developing age-related hearing loss.
Professor Joerg Albert, who led the study, said:" Many studies have looked at fruit fly hearing, but
ours is the first to examine the detailed process of how their hearing changes over time."
" These genes are similar to human genes. This will help guide future medical research on humans
and speed up the discovery of new drug or gene treatments."

The world's first human-like robot half-marathon(半程马拉松) was held in Beijing on 19 April.
Amazingly, 20 robots joined about 12,000 human runners in the race.
The robots were different, from the180-centimeter-tall"Tiangong Ultra" to
the75-centimeter-tall"Little Giant". They had human-like looks and ran on two legs. Each robot
started at a slightly different time so that they would not bump into each other. To give each robot
the best chance, each travelled with support workers. Just as human runners needed to get energy
from water, the robots were allowed to get new batteries during the panies were also
allowed to replace(替换) their robots when they could no longer run.
The first robot to cross the finishing line was Tiangong Ultra. It finished the race in2hours,40
minutes and 42 seconds, while the winner of the men's race finished in1 hour and 2 minutes. To
the robots, the most important thing was not to win, but to finish. At last, six of the robots crossed
the finishing line.
The race was a success, even for the robots who didn't finish. Their efforts will help their
developers improve future human-like robots. The race also marked the first time in human
history--human-like robots have tried a half-marathon.
However, the marathon also displayed some weaknesses of the robots. They needed people to
change their batteries, prevent falls, and even control them. These challenges show hidden
problems in the field: behaving like humans requires further work in materials science, storing
power and AI learning abilities.
In the future, as AI gets smarter, the gap(差距 )between humans and machines will narrow. For
China, developing these human-like robots isn't just about making them run faster-- it's about
which country can make full use of science and technology to take the lead in the world. And in
that marathon, every fall and hard-won step is very important.
