“elderly adj. 年级较大的，上了年纪的”，elderly与old都可表示“年老的”，但elderly语气更礼貌、尊重，多用于正式或关怀语境。the + 形容词的结构，表 “一类人”，如the elderly（老年人），the disabled (残疾人)等，属于复数概念，做主语时，谓语动词要用复数形式。
