It was in 1979 and 8-year-old Wendy McDowell needed to fly from Bismarck to Burlington. No one in her family could go with her, so her parents decided it would be safe for a 19-year-old family friend to accompany her. When they arrived for their layover in Chicago O’Hare Airport, their connecting flight was cancelled. The family friend bought herself a ticket back home and left the girl all alone in one of the busiest international airports in the country.
“You know that feeling of being a kid and looking around and every single face is a stranger’s face.” She remembers.
She felt desperate until a woman in white walked over to her. “She came and sat next to me,” she recalls. “And I immediately felt a sense of safety because someone was with me.”
The woman could tell something was not right and she got permission from McDowell to take over. After reassuring McDowell, the woman convinced her to share her mother’s phone number. And on the phone, she convinced her mother that McDowell would be safe with her. Although, she was flying to Pittsburgh, she made a detour (绕道) to Burlington to drop off McDowell.
“The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve been thinking about her,” McDowell said. “Just knowing that she did all of that for a stranger. Something that maybe didn’t feel huge to her just completely redirected my life because I don’t think I have ever been treated as badly as I was by the person who left me.”
She has used that experience to teach her son about kindness. “I want him to know that people can choose to be beautiful and helpful and provide security and that people like this are out there,” she said. “So I just appreciate it more than words can really express.”

“To me, love is the most important thing. What could be more healing than love ”
These words, like lines from a poem, are easy to agree with coming from Robin, who founded the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic in central Ubud, the setting for the film Eat Pray Love. Now the clinic provides treatment or educational support for over 100,000 people annually.
Giving birth to her first child at nineteen, Robin moved to Hawaii after college, working for several years on a farm, where she taught farming practices and poetry. But in 1991, she received heartbreaking news. Her idyllic life on the farm in Hawaii was turned upside down when her sister, expecting a child in Alabama, died of pregnancy complications (妊娠并发症).
“When my dear sister passed away, I realised mothers were dying everywhere. In countries with increased poverty, some people can’t afford to go to the hospital. What motivated me initially was my love for my sister, but this soon grew into a concern for mothers and children all over the world.” Robin’s feelings for her sister were transformed into a desire to help women everywhere in need.
To ensure that children are born healthy, nutritionally balanced meals are provided for expecting mothers free of charge. Those who lack housing are free to stay as long as it is necessary. The clinic also sees patients of all ages who have symptoms unrelated to childbirth, while providing facilities for language learning and IT education, and annually training over 6,000 nursing and midwifery (助产) students, supported by a scholarship programme.
Just as Robin said, love is to be found inside the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic. Perhaps feelings of showing kindness toward others and wanting to make the world a better place are the key to a brighter tomorrow.

The parents’ interpersonal strength, such as kindness, love, and social intelligence, is one of the salient points in nurturing their children. As social psychologist John Bowlby puts it, “We do as we have been done by.”
Take my grandmother as an example. When other children came over to play with my mother, my grandmother would fix them delicious butter sandwiches—the crusts (面包皮) delicately removed from the bread for “the guests” but unavoidably left on for her own children. This is how we ought to treat guests in our home—guests are worthy of kindness, but you are not. The kindness that my grandmother modeled and instructed her children to emulate (效仿) was not ultimately what they experienced—kindness was seen but not felt.
Generally, we often treat others the way we ourselves were treated. So much of what we learn as children and adults is experience-dependent. First-hand experience, especially when repeated over time, literally shapes the brain and nervous system, with downstream consequences for the way we engage with the world around us, deal with emotions, and behave socially.
We don’t learn to love by being instructed to love; we learn to love by experiencing love. We don’t learn kindness by being told to be kind; we learn kindness by experiencing kindness in our darkest moments. Recent research shows that children who received help while playing a game were more likely to share with another child, possibly motivated by feelings of gratitude to the person who helped them. They could learn that they don’t just repay the kindness but they need to pay it forward.
This transforms one of the key questions about raising kids: Perhaps we should ask not how to teach our children kindness, but how we want our children to experience kindness from us. If we want to create a kinder society, we might start with policies that ensure kinder treatment of kids. This means reimagining our education and foster care systems around compassion and support. Science tells us that experiences of kindness in childhood have long-term, biological and intergenerational effects on children’s development; our parenting and political systems should reflect the science.

Ethics (道德规范) are concerned with people’s moral actions. One type of ethics is school ethics. 36 They include students, teachers and administrators. Ethics designed for each of these groups are usually created within the institution, through professional organisations, or by both.
School ethics provide ethical standards that people are expected to follow in relation to working with others and in the decision-making process. Ethics also bring consequences to those who don’t follow school ethics. These moral rules are significant. 37 Moreover, they encourage people to support each other and support the school with some special requirements designed for them.
38 Particularly, students must respect their peers, teachers and admini-strators. Additionally, school ethics require students to respect their institutions which they’re admitted into. One of the most significant factors concerning students and ethics in schools is plagiarism (剽窃)—students are required to hand in work that is uniquely their own and be prepared to suffer consequences if it is not.
Teachers and administrators are ethically guided through professional and institutional ethical codes. They are typically required to create a learning environment that promotes high ethical standards for students through modeling and instruction. Moreover, teachers and administrators should create a safe and fair learning environment. 39
Educators are also required to show high ethical standards in their communication with parents, peers, students, etc. Building trust is an essential part of these interactions. Teachers and administrators are ethically expected to maintain their professional training and to present themselves as representatives of the school in an ethical manner. 40 But most of the educators are supportive of these ethics.
A. Besides, the rules can be interesting.
B. Why should students follow the ethics
C. What are school ethics’ requirements for students
D. To strictly follow all the ethics can be challenging.
E. They help create an atmosphere of trust, honesty, etc.
F. Generally, such ethics apply to all people in a school.
G. Thus, all students can have equal educational chances to achieve success.

A Heartwarming Story
Recently, I came across a beautiful display of sympathy that I felt worthwhile to share. While waiting at a crowded bus stop, I noticed an elderly woman struggling to carry her groceries. Despite the rush hour, a young man stepped forward, offering his assistance without hesitation.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Witnessing his selfless act reminded me of the marked impact of kindness in our daily lives. It taught me that sympathy knows no boundaries of age or circumstance. In our fast-paced world, such gestures serve as gentle reminders of our shared humanity, inspiring us to extend a helping hand whenever possible.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much. Contact…”
I rarely read the classified advertisements, so why did I notice that one I laid the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years ago during the Great Depression when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin.
When my elder twin sisters began showing an interest in music,Harriet Anne learnt to play Grandma’s piano, while Suzanne turned to Daddy’s violin. Simple tunes became lovely melodies. My baby brother danced; Daddy hummed and Mother whistled. I just listened.
When my arms grew long enough, I tried to play Suzanne’s violin. Oh, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
One evening, as the twins played in the school orchestra, I closed my eyes tight to fix the picture firmly in my mind. Some day, I would sit up there, I vowed silently.
It was not a good year. At harvest, the crops didn’t bring as much as we had hoped. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own ”
“Can’t you use Suzanne’s ”
“I’d like to be in the orchestra too, and we can’t both use the same violin at the same time.”
Daddy’s face looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him praying sincerely.
One evening we all sat around the table. The twins and I studied. Mother sewed and Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, George Finkle, in Columbus, Ohio. Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he asked me,“Mary Lou, do you want to go with me to visit Mr Finkle ”
He drove us to Columbus and we came to a fine, old house. A tall man opened the door.He and Daddy heartily shook hands, both talking at once.
“Mary Lou, I’ve been hearing things about you. Your Daddy has arranged a surprise for you!” He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play. The melody surged and flowed like waterfalls. Oh, to play like him, I thought.
Finishing the piece, he turned to Daddy,“I found it in a pawnshop (当铺) for seven dollars. It’s a good violin. Mary Lou should be able to make beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the violin to me.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally comprehended. It was mine!
“It’s beautiful,” I said, barely breathing. I knew Daddy’s prayer, and mine, had been answered.Back home, I practised daily, feeling no tiredness. When I was ready to join the

school orchestra, I trembled with excitement.Daddy and Mother smiled proudly in the audience at their little girl who held her cherished violin for the whole world to admire. The years seemed to run more swiftly then. I packed my violin in its case and stepped into the grown-up world. Nurse’s training, marriage, working and bringing up four daughters filled my years. Yet none of my children cared about the violin.

Paragraph 2:
I forced my thoughts to the present and read the advertisement again.
Laying the paper aside, I went to find my violin. And I dialed the number. Later that afternoon, an old car stopped in my driveway. A man in his thirties with a young girl knocked on the door. “I’ve been praying someone would answer my advertisement. My daughter wants a violin, so badly,” he said.

“How much are you asking ” “Seven dollars,” I said. I handed the case to the girl. She opened the case and touched the violin lightly as it caught the glow of the late-afternoon sun. Then she threw her arms round her smiling father.

M: I’m looking for an apartment or a house to rent for my wife and two kids.

M: That’s interesting. Why is there so much variety in apartments but not houses
W: All the houses in this neighbourhood were built in the 1950s. Back then, they were all considering a particular family size, so they all have a similar style.
M: I see. Well, we are looking for something that is clean and, most importantly, in a safe area. Our budget is about $2,500 a month.
W: Well, this neighbourhood is very safe, Sir, so you’ll have no problems. But $2,500 won’t really be able to get you a house or the bigger apartments, I’m afraid.
M: As long as there are two bedrooms, we’ll be fine.
W: Well, I’m seeing about a few places that meet your needs. If you don’t mind waiting until tomorrow afternoon, I can take you to look at them.

Text 10
Attention, parents! If your son or daughter signed up for soccer, then please listen up. As you know, there were five age groups planned for this year: 5—6, 7—9, 10—11, 12—13, and 14 and up. Unfortunately, we did not have enough kids signed up for the youngest group to make enough teams. I’m a parent of a soccer player myself, so I know how you must feel. The good news is that there are a few parents who are willing to volunteer
to run soccer camps on the weekend in a more informal way for the youngest players. You would need to sign some paperwork and arrange your own transportation and appropriate clothing for each weekend, but at least your kids will have the opportunity to play soccer every week. For more information, please contact the soccer coach Steve Wollinsky at 425-7660. You can also add your name to a sign-up sheet that is posted on a wall next to the bathroom. If you do so, please make sure to leave your phone number and email address as well. Thanks for everything.

It looked like another aircraft at first sight. The pilot told his young passengers that it was built in 1964 by the Boeing Company. But appearances were misleading, and the 13 students from Europe and the USA who boarded the aircraft were in for the flight of their lives. Inside, the area that normally had seats had become a long white tunnel (隧道). Heavily padded (用软物垫) from floor to ceiling, it looked a bit strange. Most of the seats had been taken out, apart from a few at the back, where the young scientists quickly took their places.
For 12 months, science students from across the continents had competed to win a place on the flight at the invitation of the European Space Agency. The challenge had been to suggest imaginative experiments to be conducted in weightless conditions. For the next two hours the Boeing’s flight would be shooting upwards towards the heavens before moving towards Earth. The intention was to achieve weightlessness for a few seconds.
The aircraft took off smoothly enough, but any feelings that the young scientists and I had that we were on anything like a scheduled passenger service quickly disappeared when the pilot put the plane into a 45-degree climb which lasted around 20 seconds. Then the engines cut out and we became weightless. Everything became confused, and left or right, up or down no longer had any meaning. After ten seconds of free-fall descent (降落), the pilot pulled the aircraft out of its nosedive (俯冲).
Each time the pilot cut the engines and we became weightless, a new team conducted its experiment. First it was the Dutch, who wanted to discover why cats always land on their feet. Then it was the German team, who conducted a successful experiment on a traditional building method to see if it could be used for building a future space station. The Americans had an idea to create solar sails that could be used by satellites.
After two hours of going up and down in the plane doing experiments, most of the students thought it was an unforgettable experience and one they would be keen to repeat.

Astronaut McCandless at last reached his destination: some 320 feet out in space, 170 miles above the Atlantic, a human satellite in orbit, travelling at 23 times the speed of sound. Yet the astronaut felt no sense of movement until he looked down and saw the planet beneath his feet, a pin-sharp relief map unfolding at four miles per second: “Looks like Florida. It is Florida!” he said, his calmness disappearing immediately as he spotted Cape Canaveral below.
Looking out, pilot Robert L. “Hoot” Gibson centred the distant figure in the viewfinder (取景器) of his camera Hassel-blad—but then pulled the camera away from his eye, briefly startled by the power and clarity of the image he had framed. He had never seen so clearly on his planet. Gibson saw McCandless suspended alone in the blackness—his white suit seeming to shine beneath the sunlight of outer space, the blue band of Earth’s atmosphere curving away beneath him. Gibson checked the settings on the camera, and then checked them again. He took this photo.
Meanwhile, McCandless continued to test the abilities of his experimental flying machine: He sailed back toward Challenger and then drew away once more; he dipped and rose. Like the other astronauts before him who had spoken of walking in space—back in 1965, Ed White had been so unwilling to return to his Gemini capsule that he described doing so as “the saddest moment of my life”—McCandless had hoped, if only for a few moments, to experience the noiseless loneliness of being alone in the heavens; but the noise of the three audio feeds in his headset made it impossible.
Almost six hours after the experiment had begun, McCandless came back inside the spacecraft, sealed the door of the airlock behind him and removed his helmet. Down in Mission Control, the astronaut’s wife hugged him and wept.

A 293-million-mile journey of the NASA Perseverance rover(探测器) to Mars ended successfully on 19 February 2021, with a picture-perfect landing inside the Jezero Crater. The car-sized, six-wheeled rover, nicknamed Percy, is the US Space Agency’s biggest and most advanced explorer to date. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial (微生物的) life on Mars.
Landing on Mars is extremely tricky. The Red Planet’s gravitational (引力的) pull causes approaching spacecraft to go faster to high speeds, while its thin atmosphere—just one percent that of Earth’s—does little to help slow it down as it approaches the surface.
The scientists had to reduce Percy’s 12,000 mph speed to a safe landing speed of less than five mph in just six and a half minutes. The target entry angle also had to be a precise 12 degrees steeper, or the spacecraft would burn up; any flatter, and it would get lost in space. It is no wonder that the final approach is often referred to as the “seven minutes of terror”.
Upon attaining a manageable speed, Percy briefly flew over the Martian surface to seek out the perfect landing spot. Its complex map-reading system rapidly scanned the area and matched it with maps in its database to find the best location.
“Perseverance is the smartest robot ever made, but confirming that microbial life once existed carries an unusually large burden of proof,” said Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division. “While we’ll learn a lot with the great instruments we have aboard the rover, it may very well require the far more well-equipped laboratories and delicate instruments back here on Earth to tell us whether our samples carry evidence that Mars once harboured life.”
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了“毅力号”火星探测器的主要任务及其登陆火星过程中的情况。
( )32. What is the extraordinary challenge for the rover to land on Mars

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Space is where our future is—trips to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Most people would think that apart from comets (彗星) and stars, there is little else out there. 36 Scientists are now concerned that if we don’t clean it up, we may all be in great danger.
The first piece of space junk was created in 1964, when the American satellite Vanguard Ⅰ stopped operating. 37 However, since it kept orbiting around Earth without any results, scientists became increasingly comfortable abandoning things that no longer served any useful purpose in space.
38 The junk varies from tiny pieces of paint chipped off rockets to cameras, huge fuel tanks, and even odd items like the million-dollar tool kit that the astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper lost during a spacewalk.
The major problem with the space trash is that it may hit working satellites and damage travelling spaceships. In addition to this, many pieces of junk may crash with each other and break into pieces which fall back to Earth. 39 Ground stations have been built to monitor larger pieces of space trash to prevent them from crashing into working satellites or space shuttles. 40 They will stop littering in space and clean up the trash already there.
A. Future plans include a cooperative effort among many nations.
B. The junk floats slowly around Earth.
C. However, since our space journey started, we have left much trash (垃圾) in space.
D. It is said that there are now over 500,000 pieces of man-made trash orbiting Earth at a speed of up to 17,500 miles per hour.
E. It lost its connection with the ground centre.
F. To avoid this, scientists have invented several ways to clear the sky.

Parallax means 50 that they look at how much the stars move in the sky back and forth throughout the year as Earth circles the sun. This is not something 51 to you. In fact if you stretch out your hand in front of you and look at your thumb, while 52 one
eye, and then the other, your thumb will appear to move back and forth. Stars do the 53 thing, but our eyes are too close to see the difference. However, if we take a picture while on one side of Earth’s orbit, and then take another when we get to the
54 side of the orbit, then we have a large enough distance that we can see the stars’ parallax, and 55 how far away they really are.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A young girl named Nova had always been fascinated by space travel and dreamt of exploring the stars one day. She spent hours reading books about the planets and galaxies and her room was filled with star charts and models of spacecraft.
Nova also loved to repair machines. Always curious about how things worked, she would take apart gadgets (小器具) and put them back together. She even built her own telescope to look up at the night sky. Her parents encouraged her curiosity, gifting her a comprehensive engineering kit on her 10th birthday. Nova spent countless hours mastering the kit, learning everything from basic circuitry (电路) to complex mechanical systems.
One day, she signed up for the “Little Astronaut Simulation (模拟) Competition”. The selection process was strict, but Nova’s professional skills in mechanics helped her a lot. What’s more, during her training, Nova learnt more complex skills. Fortunately, Nova succeeded. She was selected to join a team of simulation astronauts on a mission to explore a distant planet. Nova was excited and she brought along her toolkit just in case hoping that her skills could contribute to the mission.
As the spaceship flew through the galaxy, Nova admired breathtaking views of stars and planets. She felt weightless and free, like she was flying through the universe. The crew members bonded over shared stories and dreams, each bringing a unique skill set to the team. Nova quickly became the go-to person for any technical issues. She believed that her toolkit and knowledge would provide invaluable service during the journey.
Later, the team encountered a problem. The simulation spaceship’s engine malfunct-ioned and they became trapped in space. They were running out of oxygen and supplies, and the nearest planet was light-years away. Many of them were scared and unsure of what to do.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Text 10
Easter Island is an island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, 3,500 kilometres off the coast of South America. A European explorer discovered it on Easter Sunday on April 5th, 1722. It has also been called “The Belly Button of the World”, because there are no other islands near it. The earliest people lived there from 700 to 1100. Over the next 800 years, it developed into a complex society. The people lived without war, until sickness
killed most of the population. The most interesting thing about the island is the 887 stone statues that are found there. The statues look like huge faces, with big noses and lips. Most of these stone statues are four metres tall, but the biggest one is ten metres tall. Some could have been twenty-one metres high, but they were destroyed in earthquakes. Until 1987, many people
thought it was impossible for ancient people to move the heavy stones. Some people said visitors from another planet brought them there. The secret of Easter Island had finally been solved when some people proved the heavy stones could be moved with simple equipment.

Ways to Save Money at the Cinema
There’s nothing quite like seeing a new film on the big screen! Here’s how to make a few savings at the cinema.
Get Two Tickets for the Price of One
Buy an insurance (保险) policy from Compare the Market and you’ll get free access to Meerkat Movies, which offers two for the price of one on tickets every Tuesday or Wednesday. Fortunately, there’s a chance to get this for around £1. All you need to do is buy a single day UK travel insurance!
Get Some Free Tickets
The Club Lloyds current account offers six free tickets to use at Odeon or Vue and you’ll get these within a month of opening the account. You’ll need to add £2,000 to the account to cancel out a £3 monthly charge, but that money doesn’t need to be in one go or stay there—you can draw it straight back out.
Buy Special Offer Tickets
From time to time there are deals running that offer cut-price tickets. Sites like Groupon often sell bundles (套票) for the likes of Odeon and Vue that work out around £4 or £5 each. Other deals include National Cinema Day (usually in September) when all tickets are £3.

I never thought I’d work in a jewellery store. I didn’t even wear a watch. But as a teenager needing money, and with the store short-staffed during the holiday rush, I took the job despite my inexperience.
My disinterest showed in my sales. The only thing I was good at was selling a nice aftershave (刮胡水) called British Sterling. I told women buying it for their partners that they were really buying it for themselves. If it made them happy, it was the right choice.
One busy evening, the store was packed with customers, mostly men, looking for last-minute gifts. We focused on showing them the pricier items. About half an hour before closing, a young girl approached me, looking worried. She wanted a special gift for her mum, but she only had $6. We had some affordable earrings, so I showed her a few pairs. The store was getting crowded, and my manager, George, kept giving me looks.
Finally, she found a pair of earrings. Her eyes lit up. “These are perfect. My mum will love them,” she said. We quickly went to the register. The total was $4.98. As I bagged the earrings, her face shone with joy. I decided to wrap the gift in our fancy gold paper and tie a ribbon around it, making it look like a gift for the best mum ever.
The girl left the store, beaming. George said to me, “We have customers ready to spend big, and you spent all this time on a $4.98 sale. You even gift-wrapped it, which is for purchases over $10.”
Without missing a beat, I replied, “This girl understands the true spirit of giving. It’s not about the money; it’s about the thought and the heart put into the gift.”

After almost an entire year of not going shopping and vacationing, you find the numbers reflected by your bank account meet your heart’s desire.
Now the most important question comes: What to do with the earnings Should you fulfill dreams of the present, invest in preserving the future or perhaps keep saving it for a rainy day
Our elders always try to teach us the value of money and its moral weakness. One may be on a winning streak (连续成功) now, but it will not always be so. One will have days when there will be no sunshine but only rain, and one’s luck will hide behind those thick grey clouds. Save for those rainy days, they say. Do not spend too much, live within a budget, refrain from credit no matter how small and save for the future.
Since the very first time we earn our own money from a summer job or earning our first salary, the lessons start. In fact, the pocket money that we receive when we are children begins the process of learning how to best manage one’s money.
People often think like this—one day when I have enough money, I will travel the world. Then, once we do earn enough money, tomorrow’s plans start shadowing our present ones. However, is it wise to keep living for that future Will we still enjoy or even be able to backpack in our 50s How will we ever enjoy our present if we are constantly living for the future
Good questions, aren’t they I say travel but don’t let yourself run dry, treat yourself to some luxuries but also keep enough for your necessities, and enjoy your present but with a plan for the foreseeable future. Life is for the living, so live it sensibly.

If a stranger offered you a free cookie, you might well eat it. But what if they offered to also give you $2 You might politely decline and walk away thinking, “Something smells fishy.”
In a study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that people tend to turn down offers of “free money” as well as unusually high salaries or suspiciously cheap services because they seem “too good to be true”. The research bridges economics and psychology to explain why financial attraction can backfire.
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent of participants ate a cookie offered freely—compared with about 20 percent of those offered $2 as well. “People typically imagine things like that someone did something disgusting to the cookie,” says study lead author Andrew J. Vonasch, a psychological scientist at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
If someone seems to violate accepted norms such as self-interest without explanation, we assume they have hidden motives and infer there will be “phantom costs”: imagined consequences that reduce what Vonasch calls an offer’s “psychological value”.
Factors beyond the present moment may come into play. “Understanding that others’ noticeable overgenerosity may put us in their debt could also help explain people’s reluctance,” says Rachel McCloy, a psychologist studying decision-making at the University of Reading in England. “The old maxim ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ is clearly alive and well.”
Another experiment found that high scorers on measures of distrust inferred more phantom costs. The researchers also showed how to minimise the effect: simply provide a reason for the deal. The “cheap flights” experiment included a condition where the seats were revealed to be very uncomfortable. “Uncomfortable seats aren’t typically a selling point,” Vonasch says. “But telling people the seats were uncomfortable made them more willing to take them because it was sufficient clarification.”

D. It may enhance the value of an offer.

A. To promote generosity in society.
B. To serve as a supporting argument.
C. To highlight hidden costs of generous offers.
D. To remind people to be cautious of free items.
B

C. Discounting the price further.

Nobody can live without money. 36 However, money cannot buy everything. You can’t buy the following things only relying on money you have.
Time
Money is a tool for trade. We spend most of our time getting, spending, worrying and fantasising (想象) about money.

Health

Happiness

A. Show your respect for others.
B. Money can buy a lot of things.
C. Self-respect is obtained from within.

假定你是李华,你校将以“The Value of Money”为主题举办英文演讲比赛。请你写一篇演讲稿参赛,内容包括:
1. 金钱与人生的关系;
2. 你的金钱观。

Dear fellow students,
Today, I want to talk about “The Value of Money”. Money plays a significant role in our lives; it can provide comfort, security, and opportunities. However, it is essential to remember that money is not everything. It cannot buy true happiness or genuine relationships.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In my opinion, money should be viewed as a tool rather than an ultimate goal. We should use it wisely to enrich our lives and help others, rather than let it control us. Ultimately, a fulfilling life comes from experiences, love, and kindness, not just wealth.
That’s all, thank you!

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The emergency doctor stood at the foot of my husband’s hospital bed, holding the test results and a diagnosis (诊断)—Acute Myeloid Leukemia (急性髓细胞性白血病). He said to my husband, “We’ll move you to the leukemia floor. You’ll be here at least a month.”
A month! My mind started spinning. My mum had fought breast cancer. My aunt had lung cancer. Both had died. But neither had been in hospital for a month! Exactly how bad was my husband’s diagnosis And how were we going to struggle for a month It was March. The end of a school year was approaching. My days with my high school students were limited. How could I prepare four weeks of lesson plans and hand them over to a substitute teacher A month! Could we afford to be in the hospital
that long Our insurance was good, but we’d still have to pay our part of the medical expenses. My meals wouldn’t be covered, and parking was so expensive! My head couldn’t do the maths. I drove home, filled with countless worries. Even though the parking pass would be a significant discount, I couldn’t help but feel bothered by the cost throughout the drive.
The next morning, I packed the car with everything needed for our hospital stay and headed to school to see my students. Because we live in a small community, they would have heard about my husband’s diagnosis. I would assure them that my husband would be fine, and that I would be fine, too. I’d encourage them to be their best selves for the substitute and for me—while I was on family leave.
When I entered my classroom, the chatter stopped. I put on a smile and continued to my podium (讲台). Sitting on top was a green envelope with “Mrs Sargent” written on it. I looked over the frames of my glasses at twenty-eight faces, some smiling, some trying to resist. “What is this ” I asked. I picked up the envelope, and continued, “You guys…”

At that moment, my throat tightened with emotion and I understood the meaning behind their excited faces. An overwhelming sense of pride from them washed over me. Should I take it My brain was spinning fast. Seeing the money that the students raised, I couldn’t help but wonder another
Paragraph 1:
When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out—fives, tens, twenties.

question: How had these kids collected so much money I could even imagine the countless hours they had spent working odd jobs, determining to save every penny to help me. Therefore, deep within my heart there was a firm voice, “I can’t take it.”

Paragraph 2:
As an adult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accept these teenagers’ hard-earned money, but I decided to accept it.
I tightly held up the cash and my voice trembled as I told them how I was bothered by the cost of parking. “Kids, you just covered my parking cost for the month.” But that’s not the real reason why I accepted it. With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I hugged

each student tightly. More important than the envelope were the kindness in their hearts and the lesson they had taught themselves: How wonderful it feels to meet someone’s needs and to make a difference. Through their small act of kindness, these teenagers have shown me their growth and they are not ignorant children, but young individuals with wisdom and kindness in their hearts.

Carnival: One Day in Rio
Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However, the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister’s friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me all the highlights. He did not let me down.
The carnival is most definitely all about the samba. It’s a style of music and dance which has its roots in Africa. Lots of Africans were forced to work as slave labour by the Portuguese when Brazil was being colonised (沦为殖民地), so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals (和声). It’s the kind of music that you can’t help dancing to. And I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, my hips and shoulders were swinging (摇摆) almost in-voluntarily.
Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade—the symbol of Brazilian culture—inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come.
So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Ronnie and I never made it into the Sambadrome. We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.

Chinese New Year used to be a daylong celebration for us. My parents tried really hard to recreate the season for my sisters and me here in America. On New Year’s Day, my family, including all my uncles, aunts, and cousins, dressed in new clothes, gathered at my grandma’s house. Kids were taken out of school, and adults took the day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one tradition following another.
Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and the kids have grown up and are living their own lives. The Chinese New Year celebration is no longer as elaborate as it used to be. As we melt into American culture, the “olden ways”, as we call them, have fallen away. Life seems to have got busier and much more complex, but I often feel something is missing.
For us first-generation kids, it is often easier to let go of the traditions and customs of our parents. They don’t mean as much to us as they do to them. At the same time, they are still a part of our culture. I realised that the diaspora (流散) of young Asian Americans in the United States is not unique to me. It is an ongoing inner struggle that we all wrestle with. My Asian features and skin colour do not entirely define who I am. I am as much a “hamburger” guy as a “rice” individual. I can’t quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian. There isn’t really a checkbox that I can mark. I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.
I now have two little boys. It saddens me to think they will never be able to experience what my sisters and I did as little kids during this holiday. Recently, for the first time, I’ve hung up Chinese New Year decorations around the house and replaced our Christmas wreath (花环) on the front door with decorative firecrackers. In a way, my sons are forcing me to slow down and explore my heritage.

The day after Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, so the day after is a Friday. This day has come to be known as Black Friday. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.
Most stores offer great deals on Black Friday. They open their doors in the small hours of the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts. Some items like TVs are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to get good deals. The problem is that there are not enough low-priced items to go around. Each store may only have a few. These items are in high demand. People stand in long lines to get such great deals. They may line up hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price for a TV or laptop, but not everyone who wants one will get one. Some people leave disappointed.
The situation can be tense. Some Black Friday events have been violent. Large, eager crowds have trampled workers. Fights have broken out over toys or people cutting in line. People have shot one another over parking spots. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan on going, expect large crowds and a bit of pushing and shoving.
So where does the name “Black Friday” come from It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it drew. In the 1960s, it spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.
Now people all over the country take part in the event known as Black Friday. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Costa Rica, Black Friday is known as “Viernes Negro”. And in Mexico, stores offer an annual weekend of discounts, which they call “El Buen Fin”, meaning “the good weekend” in Spanish. I guess the language of savings is universal.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Pumpkin carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and a sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage—I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortun-ately, we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mum filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realised getting out was going to be less straight-forward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer.
Dad was summoned less, it seemed, in expectation of practical help than to make sure he didn’t miss out on the spectacle. I heard him propose calling the fire department. “Stay tuned,” said Mum; she’d mentioned she was going to upload the video online, but it was only then that I realised she’d been filming the whole time.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The video cuts before my rescue—Dad got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so Mum could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail (马尾辫). I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose was plugged with pulp (果肉).
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween.
By the end of that day, it had over 1,000 views. People asked Mum to put it online, and by Wednesday morning we were getting 5:00 a.m. calls from TV breakfast shows and then the international media—the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went on a youth camp, I was recognised by children I’d never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passersby and trick-or-treaters would knock and ask, “Which is Rachel’s pumpkin ” before taking selfies with it.

The British Museum pages feature a range of exciting resources, including virtual tours with digital maps, object highlights, and facts. Below you’ll find a list of galleries on different floors, together with two galleries created especially for our online audience.
The Lower Floor

The Ground Floor
The Collecting the World Gallery in Room 2 celebrates some of the collectors who, in different ways, have shaped the museum over four centuries, along with individuals and organisations who continue to shape its future. The next-door galleries explore aspects of collecting like Enlightenment in Room 1 and Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces in Room 2a.
The Upper Floor
The gallery in Room 33 explores the cultures of China and South Asia through a range of splendid objects. One half presents the histories of China from 5000 BC to the present: from Ming Dynasty blue-and-white porcelain (瓷器) to modern artworks. The displays feature the richness of art and material culture in China. The other half presents many histories of South Asia chronologically (按年代地)

Native American Cultures and Lives
Most American Indians live in modern homes and apartments just like every other citizen in the 21st century. Tents are the traditional home of Plains Indians, but the Western Native people lived in many kinds of dwellings (住所) like longhouses. Today over 70 percent of Native Americans live in town areas.
Long before 1492, many Indian cultures made clothing from plant fibers (纤维). Between 3500 BC and 2300 BC, Native people living in Mesoamerica had planted many varieties of cotton. As early as AD 300, the ancestors of modern Pueblo Indians were gathering other plant fibers and processing them to make blankets (毯子) and other articles of clothing.
Today, Indians make traditional and dance clothing, worn on social and ceremonial occasions, of modern fabrics, in addition to traditional materials—including animal skins. For everyday life, native people wear all kinds of modern clothing, just like everyone else.
Some tribes keep the tradition of rain dance. Like all human beings, the native peoples of the America recognise the importance of rain. Some native cultures see rain not only as a support for life, but also as a respect for the earth. Ceremonies, songs, and dances are among the many ways native people help to keep balance in the natural world. These spiritual and culturally important traditions are part of complex religious cycles that take place throughout
the year, year after year. It’s hard to know when or why these traditions were first introduced. The reality of cultural practices such as rain dance is much more meaningful and humanly rich than the popular images. Today, many ceremonies are closed to people outside the community.

Growing up in my household meant often hearing live music. When I was six years old, I took a traditional Irish step dance class. I fell in love and stuck with it for the next seven years. During that time my father also became more involved in the Irish music world, so he would play, and I would dance. My ethnic heritage is German and Irish, but because I was surrounded by traditional Irish music and dance in my home, I have grown to be more interested in and connected to my Irish heritage.
When I started interning (实习) for the Folklife Festival, I became interested in traditional Basque music and dance and I learnt that their experience with dance is very similar to my own.
There are so far over 170 Basque organisations in 24 countries, with a greater population of Basques outside of the Basque country than in it. The separation they experience from their homeland is both physical and psychological, so being part of a group with the
same interests is an important social support system. These organisations contribute to the continuation of Basque culture, language and community, and encourage future generations to learn about their ethnic heritage. One of the ways they achieve this is through dance.
While learning and performing Basque dances, they connect to their heritage, experience a part of their homeland, preserve Basque culture, and create connections and friendships that last a lifetime.
Californian Valerie Arrechea began teaching alongside her father at the age of 13 and on her own at 16. For her, dance is her preferred expression of heritage; it provides a way to be proud of her Basque heritage.
The dance performances of North American Basque organisations have developed the interest of non-Basque Americans as well. Janet Iribarne from the Basque Dancers explained that their organisation is open to anyone, and after seeing her group perform, several of her non-Basque friends have developed their own love of Basque traditions as well.

Cultural diversity in the classroom is on the rise. U.S. public schools now have more Latino, African-American, and Asian students than white students. In our increasingly diverse and multicultural society, it’s more important than ever for teachers to incorporate (包含) culturally responsive instruction in the classroom. Diversity doesn’t only relate to race and ethnicity; it can include students of different religions, economic status, gender identities, and language backgrounds.
Cultivating (培养) multicultural awareness and taking a culturally responsive approach to teaching can benefit all students. Not only does creating greater multicultural awareness and inclusion help students with different backgrounds and needs succeed, but it also encourages acceptance and helps students prepare for better growth in a diverse world.
This kind of education can help prevent students from developing prejudices (偏见) later in life. It allows them to understand people different from themselves since they’re more aware of the experiences that someone of a different race or cultural group may face. Besides, exposed to a diverse range of opinions, thoughts, and cultural backgrounds, students are to be more open-minded later in life. They would be more open to new ideas and be able to attain greater comprehension of a topic by taking in different points of view.
There are several ways teachers can ensure that both the classroom environment and curriculum are responsive to the increasing cultural diversity of our society. Take the time to learn about each student’s cultural background, hobbies, learning styles, and what makes them unique. If students feel appreciated and comfortable with the teacher, there’s a better chance they’ll feel comfortable talking with their peers and respecting them in the class.
It’s also important for students to celebrate and respect their own diverse backgrounds, as well as each other’s. When appropriate, teachers should encourage students to research and learn about their own ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This allows them to better understand their own culture as well as the differences from their peers. Acknowledging these differences and creating a safe space for discussion can help promote understanding in the classroom.

Perhaps you have heard the expression “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” So when you want to do business in France, you have to get to know French culture, make marketing plans and run your business by local laws.
36 The French take great pride in their language, so anyone who does not speak it may run the risk of being disrespected by his or her French colleagues or business partners. Also, another reason why learning French is important is that it is a great way to show every possible French business partner that you care and respect their country’s culture and language.
The first thing that you should do when meeting someone new is to shake his or her hand firmly and always look at the person in the eye. In social meetings with friends, kissing is common.
Use first names only after being invited to. 37 The French will sometimes introduce themselves using their surname first, followed by their first name.
Dress well. 38 Your business clothing is a reflection of your success and social status. Always try to be tasteful and stylish. Women are advised to dress simply but elegantly. Wearing make-up is practised widely by businesswomen.
The French are passionate about food, so lunches are common in doing business in France, which usually consist of an appetiser, a main meal with wine, cheese, dessert and coffee, and normally take up to two hours. 39
Do not begin eating until the host says “bon appetite”. Pass dishes to the left, keep wrists above the table and try to eat everything on the plate. 40 This may suggest that you find the food tasteless. If eating in a restaurant, the person who makes an invitation always pays.
A. Remember to be as polite as possible.
B. This is a time for relationship building.
C. Use Monsieur or Madame before the surname.
D. Be careful with adding salt, pepper or sauces to your food.

For a proper topic, I recommend exploring the art of Chinese calligraphy. It’s not only visually attractive but also deeply rooted in our history. You can dig into its origins, different styles, and the significance of each stroke. As for the brochure design, consider employing traditional Chinese colours like red and gold for an authentic feeling. Additionally, it’s also a good idea to include a brief history, colourful and charming pictures, and perhaps a step-by-step guide to writing a few basic characters. This interactive activity could engage readers and provide a hands-on experience.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)

The school picnic day was on Sunday, and on Saturday morning I decided to ask Mum some questions. As soon as Mum took the last bite of her toast, I decided I couldn’t wait for her any longer and asked, “Mum, where is Italy ”
My mum pushed up her glasses and looked at me with her head to one side. Then she said, “Italy is a European country which is very far away from here, my love. Why do you want to know that ” I shrugged (耸肩), “That’s where Mike, the new boy in our class, is from.”
She nodded and invited me to go to fetch the geography book. The book was big and Mum always kept the very big books on the bottom shelf of our bookcase. I watched as Mum flipped to the index (索引) and then to a page near the middle. “Here we go,” she said, turning the map around to show me. I let my finger meet hers where it said the word “Italy” in capital letters. According to the introduction to the country on the page, Mum helped me know more about the country.
“You know, Mum, Mike’s parents are extremely busy working in downtown. He seldom eats regularly let alone has his native foods. I really want him to be very happy for his first picnic with us…” I paused and observed Mum, worried that Mum would think that it was silly and maybe a waste of money buying food only to give it away. But she didn’t. Instead, she said, “I think that’s a brilliant idea! Go and get ready, and we’ll head out on a big shopping trip.”

We went to stands of fresh fruit and vegetables, selecting some for making pizza. Proudly looking at the products, Mum and I drove back home in high spirits. I could picture the perfect pizza which my mother was expert in cooking and the new boy’s amazed face.
