1.must (肯定推测)“一定”
强度最高(>95%可能性),仅用于肯定句。否定句中要用 can’t (不可能)。如:
(1)The light is on.He must be at home now.灯亮着,他现在一定在家。
(2)She speaks perfect French.She must have lived in Paris.她法语流利,一定在巴黎住过。
(3)The man over there can’t be Leo’s father.He has gone to Shanghai.那边那个男人不可能是Leo的父亲。他去上海了。
2.can/could(可能性推测)
·can:多用于否定句和疑问句(否定时表示“不可能”)。如:
(1)That can’t be true! The store closed an hour ago.这不可能是真的!商店一小时前就关门了。
(2)Even experienced drivers can make mistakes.即使是经验丰富的司机也可能犯错误。
·could:肯定/否定/疑问句通用,可能性弱于can(≈50%)。如:
(1)The keys could be in the drawer.钥匙可能在抽屉里。
(2)Could he be lying 他可能在说谎吗
3.may/might(不确定推测)
可能性较低(≈30%),may比might稍肯定。(may的否定形式表示“可能不”。)如:
