Text 1
W: Have you been to that new Italian restaurant in town yet The pizza was delicious. It’s beside the Chinese
restaurant.
M: No, I haven’t. I make pretty nice pizzas myself. Actually, I do want to try the Indian restaurant which opened up
recently though.
Text 2
W: Frank, I thought you were working in New York.
M: I was, but I’ve moved back. I just couldn’t get used to living in a big city, so I’m back at school, taking courses
to be a teacher.
Text 3
M: Can you find me the X-ray of Mr. Smith’s right leg, please He is the next patient.
W: Of course, here you are, Dr. Brown.
Text 4
M: Jenny, after you finish those reports, can you start arranging a meeting and ordering some paper for the
company
W: Okay, no problem. I should be able to get started in a couple of hours.
Text 5
M: There is a big sale on in that store. Have you been there Not much stuff for men. But there is a huge section for
women. Check it out.
W: Thanks, Kevin. After a busy week with work, that’s just what I need.
Text 6
M: How will you travel down to London for the meeting next month
W: I am going to drive. It will be more convenient. How about you
M: I will take the train or the plane because I don’t like the London traffic. Which hotel are you staying at
W: I chose holiday inn. It is seventy-five pounds a night. Plus, they have a gym and a swimming pool.
M: That is amazing. I chose the Hilton. It is fifteen pounds more than holiday inn. There is no gym or pool, but the
location is very central.
Text 7
W: Well, it is time to think about our vacation, Greg. Any ideas
M: I would love Hawaii and it looks so romantic. I’ve always wanted to go there.
W: I went there to attend my friend’s wedding last year. I think it’s too expensive. Also, there is not much to do
there for a whole week. I was thinking of somewhere in Europe, Italy or France
M: I was once on a business trip to France. France is nice, but it is cold this time of year, as it often snows these
days. How about South America where we can get some sun
W: Okay, Brazil or Argentina
M: Brazil would be better. Plus, the beaches there look amazing.
Text 8
M: Hey, Mary. How was the movie
W: Well, I didn’t really enjoy it, to be honest.
M: Why As a hit movie it received some great reviews for its story and music.
W: Oh, the movie was fine. I just got annoyed, because of the couple sitting in front of me.
M: What happened
W: First, they came late, so it took them a while to get into their seats. This all happened during an exciting part of
the movie, and then they started talking.
M: Oh, I hate it when people do that.
W: The man had seen the movie before. He was telling the woman the entire story.
M: Unbelievable.
W: Well, you won’t believe what happened next. The man to my left asked them to be quiet and they started
arguing. Their voices just got louder and louder.
M: Then what happened
W: The manager of the cinema was called in.
M: That’s terrible. Did they calm down eventually
W: Yes, but it was too late. They had ruined the movie for me.
Text 9
M: Welcome to the showroom. How can I help you today
W: I am looking for a family-friendly vehicle with low costs. I can exchange my old car against the price of the
new vehicle too.
M: Of course. Have you seen anything you like so far
W: Well, I like Kia. They are good in quality. Where are they from
M: It is a South Korean car. To be honest, the parts are more expensive than your Ford but they are cheaper than a
French car like Renault and much cheaper than a German BMW.
W: How much would I get for my old vehicle
M: I would say at around 3,000.
W: Is that red five-door Kia over there available
M: Sadly, no. It just sold last week for 9,000. We do have another one coming in next week, but it is green. Are
you interested
W: Okay, as long as it’s not black. What day shall I come back
M: Wednesday morning would be good.
Text 10
M: Thanks everyone. Let’s clap our hands one more time for the beautiful newly married couple. It is amazing to
watch Jerry get married today. Seeing the looks of joy on everyone’s faces touched my heart so dearly. Ever since
Jerry and I were kids, people would call us twins. Being a year and a half older than him, this deeply annoyed me at
that time. As I wanted to be the bigger and stronger of us too, we have all been so close the three of us, me, Jerry
and our lovely little sister Janet. Janet, I see from the screen that you are crying tears of joy. Thanks for your
generous gift which has just arrived in time. Although it’s a pity, you are not present in person, having you online is
great too. This family means the world to me, and to Gail, I want to welcome you to our family. Now I know you
all are hungry, but please I suggest all of us walk out to the garden to watch Jerry and Gail have their first dance as
a married couple.

Just then, Mrs. Garcia got a phone call — her daughter was having a baby. After a quick word with Mrs. Rice,
she rushed off at lightning speed. Then Mrs. Rice turned to me and said, “Now you have to be my assistant.” And
that’s when I realized I didn’t have a worried feeling anymore. Instead, I had a proud feeling, like the sun was
rising inside my chest. The feeling stayed with me all through the rest of the show. And no matter what went wrong,
Mrs. Rice and I just fixed it. When the last act was over, the audience kept smiling and clapping.
At the end, when Mrs. Rice went onstage to thank everyone, I thought my job was done—until she said my
name. “And a special thanks to our backstage manager, Clementine, whose quick thinking and tireless help made
this show run smoothly!” she announced. A wave of applause washed over me. In that moment, I understood what
my mom meant. My talent wasn’t for performing on the stage; it was for seeing what needed to be done and
making it happen. The rising sun inside my chest burst into a full, warm glow. I finally had my place in the
spotlight, just not the one I had originally imagined.永昌县第一高级中学 2025-2026-2第一次月考试卷

Every day, photographer Kirsten Elstner receives dozens of messages full of ideas from youth and
photographers who attended one of her camps. She founded the Photo Camp in 2003 to transform photography into
a bridge for connection. It has now evolved into a global movement, reaching 3,000 young people across 44
countries.
People are tied together by Elstner’s belief: kindness finds its way across even the widest divides through
storytelling. This commitment shines through small acts. She even responds to every participant’s message,
forming a Photo Camp family that lasts long after workshops end.
The camp’s magic consists in its thoughtfully designed structure. Photographers and local leaders guide
students, immigrants, small-town residents, and more, who often start as complete strangers. Guided by a shared
theme, they explore creative passions before teaming up to select 10 collective photos. Campfires, group meals, and
reflective questions like “What’s your gift to the world ” deepen these bonds. As Elstner notes, “It’s hard to dislike
someone you’re co-creating a story with,” and this teamwork lays the foundation for true understanding.
Countless stories underscore (强调) its huge influence. Trainees like Markus Burman carry this spirit forward
by leading their own camps, advocating for indigenous (本土的) rights in Bolivia and expanding Elstner’s vision
into far-reaching influence that honors cultural roots while promoting global connections. These tales reveal the
camp’s essence lies not just in teaching a skill, but in enabling young voices to turn personal truth into collective
care.
As Photo Camp marks its 20th anniversary, Elstner is doubling down on this mission: she intends to expand
trainee networks. “You can’t change the world completely,” she says, “but you can spread kindness in your own
little corner of it.” For the next two decades, this vision remains clear — keep listening, keep connecting, and let
young voices build a more caring world.
24. What is the primary purpose of the Photo Camp
A. To teach skills of photography. B. To build up interpersonal bonds.
C. To increase its global influence. D. To tell stories of people’s divides.
25. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. How the camp operates. B. Who the camp targets at.
C. What effect the camp has. D. What focus the camp sets.
26. Why is Markus Burman mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To demonstrate his efforts. B. To explain his background.
C. To present trainees’ wishes. D. To reveal the camp’s impact.
27. Which of the following can best describe Kirsten Elstner
A. Humble. B. Independent. C. Devoted. D. Learned.
C
Acid rain, defined as rain, snow, fog or other forms of water that contain high levels of certain strong acids,
was first identified by Scottish chemist Robert August Smith in 1852. This type of precipitation (降水) typically
has a pH between 4.2 and 4.4, while normal rain is slightly acidic with a pH of 5.6. Though natural sources like
rotting plants and erupting volcanoes release some acid-forming chemicals, human activities are the main driver of
acid rain.
Specifically, coal-burning power plants, factories, and cars burn fossil fuels, which send out harmful gases like
sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). These gases then react with water, oxygen, and other substances in
the air to form acids, and winds can carry these acidic compounds hundreds of miles across the surface.
Ecologically, acid rain first makes rivers, lakes, and wetlands more acidic, which in turn causes the soil to
release aluminum. This aluminum then flows into water bodies and poisons fish and other water-living creatures,
with the harm further spreading through food chains to affect even non-water living animals like birds. Forests also
suffer great damage: acid rain not only takes away necessary nutrients such as calcium from the soil and releases
aluminum, but also burns tree leaves. As a result, plants become weak in resisting cold, insects, and diseases.
Besides ecological damage, acid rain also wears down stone buildings and vehicles; when it turns into breathable
fog, it can cause certain health problems.
To solve these problems, we need to cut down on fossil fuels used and follow air-quality rules. The United
Nations has been promoting global cooperation to reduce harmful gas emissions, and such efforts have helped some
ecosystems recover from acid rain damage. However, recovery is slow, and difficulties in unifying global standards
make progress harder. As long as fossil fuels continue to be used, acid rain will not disappear — this remains a
global challenge that requires ongoing joint efforts.
28. According to the passage, what is the main cause of acid rain
A. Natural sources from erupting volcanoes.
B. Human activities like burning fossil fuels.
C. The reaction of water with oxygen in the air.
D. The spread of acidic compounds by wind.
29. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a direct consequence of acid rain on forests
A. Taking away essential nutrients from the soil.
B. Releasing aluminum that harms plant roots.
C. Burning tree leaves and weakening plants.
D. Causing birds to lose their habitats.
30. What can be inferred from the passage about the recovery of ecosystems from acid rain damage
A. It is a quick process once harmful gas emissions stop.
B. It is fully achieved through the efforts of the UN.
C. It faces challenges for lack of unified global standards.
D. It is impossible as long as fossil fuels are still in use.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the issue of acid rain
A. Indifferent. B. Pessimistic. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.

In central London, groups of young professionals regularly meet at a meditation (冥想) studio called 7Breaths.
Their main activity is not typical yoga or meditation, but a specific practice called “breathwork”. In these classes,
an instructor guides participants to focus on and control their breathing. The goal is simple: to feel less stressed.
The idea that controlling your breath can calm your mind is not new. For example, ancient Hindu texts written
over 2,000 years ago described “pranayama”, a yoga practice focused on breath control. But does it really work for
everyone To answer this, scientists use randomised-controlled trials (RCTs).
A 2023 analysis of 12 such studies, involving 785 people, examined the effect of slow breathing on stress. The
results showed that participants who did breathwork felt more stress reduction than those in the control groups. The
positive effect was small but clear, and similar to what is sometimes seen with online treatment.
However, there are some reasons to be careful. In several of these studies, the control groups were people on a
waiting list for mental health treatment. Waiting for help can sometimes make people feel worse, which could make
the breathwork group seem more effective by comparison.
A more recent study from Stanford University tested different daily five-minute breathing exercises for one
month. While all participants felt better at first, only those doing structured breathwork continued to feel their mood
improve over time. One method, “cyclic sighing” (two short breathing-ins followed by a long breathing out),
showed the best results.
How can just breathing change your mood One theory is that it serves as distraction from negative thoughts,
which is the key mechanism. Focusing closely on breathing leaves little room for other thoughts.
Science also shows that slow, controlled breathing can increase “heart-rate variability” — a measure of the
variation in time between heartbeats. Low levels are often linked to conditions like depression. There is even
animal research suggesting that the brain circuits (脑回路) for slow breathing and stress regulation are connected.
While the scientific evidence is still developing, the practice has very few risks and may soon become a
recognized tool for improving mental well-being.
32. Why do people attend breathwork classes at 7Breaths
A. To learn ancient yoga techniques. B. To achieve mental relaxation.
C. To practice special meditation. D. To study stress-related disorders.
33. What does paragraph 4 focus on about the research
A. The function of the control group. B. The limitation of previous studies.
C. The effect of breath control practice. D. The link between breathing and health.
34. What does the underlined word “distraction” in paragraph 6 mean
A. A complete removal of worry. B. A way to strengthen memory.
C. Something that takes attention away. D. Something that causes deep thinking.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Science Behind Breathwork for Stress
B. Breaths: A London Studio’s Success Story
C. Ancient Wisdom: Breath Control Practices
D. A Comparison of Modern Breathing Methods

Poetry has a unique way of capturing emotions, experiences, and ideas in a brief and often complex form.
However, the beauty of a poem can sometimes be hidden behind its language, imagery, and structure. 36 By
understanding the various poetry techniques and approaches to poem analysis, you can uncover the deeper
meanings within a poem.
The first step in poem analysis is to explore the poem’s context. This involves researching the poet’s
background, the period in which the poem was written, and any relevant historical or social contexts. Knowing
these factors can provide valuable insights into the poetic themes and the poet’s intentions. 37
Language and imagery are vital components of a poem, and they play a significant role in conveying its
themes and emotions. When analyzing poetry, pay close attention to the choice of words and the types of imagery
used. You can ask yourself: How does the language make you feel 38 What particular atmosphere does
the poet create by words and imagery
A crucial part of learning how to analyze poetry is identifying the figures of speech used in the poem. These
are the tools poets use to create rhythm, enhance meaning, and bring out emotions. 39 Common ones
include metaphor, simile, personification, and so on. Recognize these devices to understand better how the poet
constructs their work to convey specific ideas and emotions.
Finally, consider the poet’s intentions and how they influence the overall interpretation of the poem. 40
By reflecting on the poet’s purpose, you can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the poem’s significance
and the techniques used to achieve it.
A. It seems apparent at first glance.
B. They are presented in many forms.
C. Think about why the poet wrote the poem.
D. What pictures does the poem paint in your mind
E. That’s where the art of analyzing poetry comes in.
F. Should we identify the imagery to analyze the poem
G. For example, poems from wartime reflect themes of conflict.

for her advice.
“Let’s see. You’re good at math, obviously. You’re really good at having new ideas. And you ask the most
interesting questions,” she said. “Mom,” I reminded her. “None of these can be performed on a stage.” In the
following days, I tried everything for the show but failed.
When the final rehearsal (排练) began, I walked into the hall and tried to hide, but Mrs. Garcia saw me. She
whispered in Mrs. Rice’s ear, who nodded in agreement, and then called me over. “Clementine, you can keep us
company during the rehearsal,” she said. So I had to sit between Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Garcia, right there at the side
of the stage where all the kids could see me and know that I had no talent.
The first act was called Cartwheelers. Twelve kids lined up, six on each side of the stage. When I noticed there
were no safety mats (垫子), I ran into the gym, pulled out a mat, and placed it on the floor in front of the stage.
Then I got some kids to help me. Pretty soon, we had all the mats piled up (堆起). Mrs. Rice gave me a thumbs-up.
I didn’t even get a chance to sit down again for the rest of the afternoon because everybody needed my help for
something. Finally, after everyone practiced their acts, I went over to Mrs. Rice, who showed me her watch and
then called out, “Take your places, everyone. Five minutes to ShowTime!”
