Last year, the McDonald Fire in Alaska, US, started by lightning, burned for weeks and covered a large area, making people leave their homes. This year, a big fire started in a Hong Kong building in October, spreading quickly and taking nearly 5 hours to put out.
These fires teach us important lessons. Fires can happen suddenly anywhere, so we must always be careful. We should check fire tools often and learn get-away skills—being prepared can save lives. Fire safety is not just others’ job, but everyone’s responsibility.
When a fire starts, stay calm first. Cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth to keep out smoke. Be quick to the nearest door, as clean air is near the floor. Never use lifts. If you can’t get out, close the door and block (堵住) it with wet cloths. Then call for help by the window and wait for firemen.
Big fires have taught us important lessons—fires can happen anywhere and create great danger. We must take fire safety seriously—both at home and in public places. We should check fire facilities (设施) often to make sure they work well and keep us safe.
