The following several days remained the same, yet something good was on the way. One sunny morning,

Technically, the airship is filled with hot air: an aircraft made of a large balloon full of
nearly weightless lifting gases. If it makes you think of old black-and-white pictures, you are
right — airships were popular at the beginning of the 20th century before airplanes took over.
Now they are making a comeback.
Though airship won’ t reach the speeds of a jet plane (喷 气 式 飞 机 ) , they are being
talked about as forms of slow travel like ships and night trains, where the experience makes up
for the speed. The large balloon could run on electric engines, making it a zero-carbon emitting
(排放 ) form of air transport. “Also, what makes airships impressive is that they can remain in
the air for a long period, and their ability to fly vertically (垂直地 ) up,” said leading aviation (
航空 ) expert Thomas Thessen.
The world’ s largest aircraft, the LTA Pathfinder1, is being tested in Silicon Valley. LTA,
one of the airship producers, is ready to enter the aviation market. It believes that
next-generation airships can reduce the carbon footprint by using the helium (氦气 ) inside the
balloon to do the lifting, rather than a carbon-emitting jet engine. Their airship can be used
for more efficient cargo (货物 ) transport from point to point rather than port to port, and the
airship can support relief efforts by delivering supplies even if roads and ports are damaged.
French company Flying Whales is also currently developing airships for cargo use, aiming
to reduce the environmental impact of cargo transport, while British firm HAV is focused on
how a hybrid airship — using electric engines as well as helium — can unlock a zero-emission
form of air travel.
While the new airship still has a long way to go to be a mass travel solution, it all adds up
to a change in the skies. Along with eco-friendly aviation fuel and electric planes, the new
generation of airships is replacing our carbon-heavy situation of flying.
32. Why does the author mention old black-and-white pictures
A. To show airships are outdated.
B. To stress airships have a long history.
C. To present pictures of different airships.
D. To compare the looks of airships and airplanes.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about airships
A. Their various forms. B. Their complex design.
C. Their primary purpose. D. Their major advantages.
34. What’ s the function of the helium inside the balloon
A. Having the airships lifted.
B. Making the airships fly faster.
C. Powering the airships ’ engine.
D. Reducing the weight of the airships.
35. What’ s the author’ s attitude to the new airships
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Worried.

Each year, scores of old and broken shoes end up in rubbish. But taking simple steps to

36 Shoes made of cheap materials can be more difficult to repair because they have a
limited shelf life. To buy a higher-quality pair of shoes, you’d better look for leather. It can
be restored and recolored.
Taking care of what you have.
Taking care of your shoes is important to help them last longer. 37 When buying new
leather shoes, make sure to make them shiny right away. It’s important to do this regularly to
protect your shoes.
There are treatments that can be applied to keep your leather shoes in good condition.
Using shoe trees can keep their shape. 38 Experts recommend not reaching for the same
pair every day to help prevent wear and tear. In addition, you can turn to a repair shop that can
provide you with the right guidance.
39
Simple repairs can be done at home. But if your shoes start to show more significant signs
of wear, think twice before you attempt. Repairs, for example, may involve glues. It’s just not
simply sticking something. 40 Glue won’ t work to soiled shoes. Certain household
glues can also cause damage to leather and damage the shoes.
It’s hard to put a dollar sign on repairs, but you can save money on almost any repair —
all while giving them longer wear.
A. Fixing damage.
B. Turning to a salesperson.
C. It depends on the degree of wear.
D . There’ s definitely a lot of science to it.
E. After all, prevention is less costly than repair.
F. You should also think about how often you wear your shoes.
G. The kinds of shoes you buy decide how long you’ll wear them.

It’ s strange, but I don’ t really remember much about the hurricane ( 飓 风 ) itself. It

roof just flew off. All of a sudden, there was sky where the roof had been. I was so frightened
that I just froze.

Mom cried to get out quickly, but it was already too late by then. The rain was coming
down so hard and so fast. Our street turned into a river in seconds. We were going nowhere.
At first, I was pleased we could stay at home, but soon it got really tough. Without a roof,
staying inside was too dangerous. There was water everywhere, but we couldn’t drink any of it
or we’d get really sick. We just had drinking water that was sent to us by helicopter(直升机),
but it was never enough. It was August, so it was really, really hot and it smelled so bad
everywhere!
I just spent the days watching the boats going up and down the street and looking out for
Smartie. He had disappeared the moment the storm hit.
Living in the open air, we became breakfast, lunch and dinner for the mosquitoes(蚊子 ).
But Mom said that whatever happens, we should always try to see the good side of things. It
was difficult to stay positive, though. We had lost our home and everything in it, including
Smartie. All we had left were the clothes on our backs. But as Mom kept on reminding us
that we were all together and safe, Mom’s words made us feel better. I remember us all lying
under the mid night sky and looking up at the stars. Because there were no lights, we could see
the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper and the Milky Way. It was amazing! Even though we had lost
a lot, moments like those gave us hope for the future.
