China’s first home-made aircraft carrier (航空母舰) hit the water in Dalian, Liaoning.
The new big ship is China’s second aircraft carrier. It was designed (设计) in China and built in China, too. It is about 315 meters long and 75 meters wide. That is a bit larger than three soccer fields.
An aircraft carrier is like an airport on the sea. It can carry planes and troops to war. Planes fly from the carrier and land back on it, and soldiers work and live on it, too. But building an aircraft carrier is so hard and expensive. It costs a lot of money and needs a large amount of steel and other special materials. For example, a basic aircraft carrier is made of 60,000 tons of steel. It also uses complex (复杂的) technologies. Finally, it takes years to build one. Today, not many countries own an aircraft carrier or have the ability to build one. Long ago, people found that light could go through a small hole in a dark room or a box and make a picture on the wall inside. This was called the “camera obscura”, which means “dark room”. Artists used it to help them draw things more easily. However, this picture couldn’t be kept: it would disappear (消失) when the light was gone.
The big change happened in the 19th century. A man named Joseph Nicephore Niepce wanted to keep the picture made by light. In 1826, he used a special material (材料) and put it inside a camera obscure. After many hours, he made the first real photo that didn’t disappear in a short time. It was not clear, but it was great progress.
Later, another person named Louis Daguerre made it better and faster. His way, called the daguerreotype (银版摄影法), became very popular. People could finally have their pictures taken!
After that, cameras kept improving. George Eastman made a camera called the “Kodak” in 1888. It was small and easy for everyone to use. People could take pictures of their families, trips, and happy moments.
Then, in the 20th century, digital (数码的) cameras were invented. They don’t need film. Pictures can be seen right away on a screen and saved on a computer. The invention of the camera changed our world. It helps us record important moments, learn about different places, and share our stories with others. Did you know that trees can “talk” with each other It may look like each tree in a forest stands alone. But they’re connected underground by networks made of fungi. (真菌)
Between 80% to 90% of trees are part of these networks. Earlier studies show that trees use networks to warn others about danger.
