In the mountains of Nujiang, Yunnan, there is a special school. It is not a school for children, but for women. Most of them are over 50 years old. They come to learn to write their names for the first time.
For many years, these women worked hard in the fields. They did not have the chance to go to school when they were young. Now, with the help of young volunteers, they sit in a bright classroom, holding pencils with their rough hands.
“When I was a girl, my parents said girls didn’t need to read,” said 58-year-old A Pu, tears in her eyes. “Now, I want to write a letter to my daughter who works in the city. I want to tell her I love her.”
The volunteers say the women learn slowly but they never give up. They practice writing at home after dinner. Some of them have learned to write more than 100 Chinese characters.
“Every time one of them writes her name for the first time, we all cheer,” said volunteer Wang Mei. “It’s like watching a flower bloom.”

Now, over 40,000 gulls visit Kunming every year. They stay from November to March. The people of Kunming love them. Every morning, you can see families and old people feeding the gulls by the lake. Children laugh as the white birds fly around them.

Do Animals Have Feelings
If you have a dog or a cat, you probably know the answer. When you come home, your dog wags its tail happily. When you are sad, your cat may sit quietly beside you. But do all animals have feelings
Scientists have studied this question for years. They found that many animals do show emotions. Elephants cry when a family member dies. They even visit the places where their loved ones passed away. Dolphins help sick friends to the surface to breathe. Monkeys get angry when treated unfairly.
However, not all animals show emotions in the same way. Fish, for example, might not show feelings like love or sadness. But they can feel fear and pain. Scientists say we should be careful not to think animals feel exactly like humans.
In Yunnan, a group of researchers studied the Asian elephants. They noticed something amazing. When baby elephants got stuck in the mud, the whole family worked together to save them. The mother elephants made soft sounds to calm the babies.
Why do animals have emotions Scientists believe emotions help animals survive. Fear keeps them away from danger. Love helps them care for their young. Joy brings families together.
So next time you see an animal, remember—they may have feelings too. Treat them with kindness.

A. Keep animals as pets at home. B. Study animals more carefully.
C. Treat animals with kindness. D. Watch animals’ behaviors.

The Young Guardian of the Forest
In a small village in Yunnan, 17-year-old Na Wei has a special job. Every weekend, she walks into the forest with a notebook and a camera. She is not a tourist. She is one of the youngest forest guardians in her village.
Na Wei’s village is near a nature reserve where Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys live. These monkeys are one of the most endangered animals in China. Only about 3,000 of them are left in the wild. Na Wei’s grandfather was one of the first people to protect them.
“My grandfather told me stories about the monkeys,” Na Wei said. “He knew each family. He gave them names.”
When Na Wei was 12, she started going into the forest with her grandfather. She learned to follow the monkeys’ footprints and listen to their calls. Now, she goes alone. She records how many monkeys she sees, where they go, and what they eat.
“Sometimes I walk for six hours,” she said. “But when I see the monkeys, I forget all the tiredness.”
The monkeys are shy and usually stay high in the trees. Na Wei has learned to sit quietly for hours until they come down. Once, she saw a baby monkey fall from a tree. She waited until its mother came to pick it up.
“The forest is like my second home,” she said. “I want to protect it for the monkeys and for the future.”

参考范文:
The Person I Admire Most
The person I admire most is Mr. Yang, a 70-year-old man in my neighborhood. Every morning, he goes to Dianchi Lake to feed the black-headed gulls. He has done this for twenty years.
I first met Mr. Yang when I was walking by the lake. He was surrounded by hundreds of white gulls, talking to them softly. “They are like my children,” he said with a smile. He knows the gulls’ habits and can tell which ones have come back from Siberia. He even gives them names.
What I admire about Mr. Yang is his patience and love. Winter mornings are cold, but he never misses a day. He prepares special food for the gulls to keep them healthy. When young people come to feed the birds, he teaches them the right way.
Mr. Yang has taught me that love for nature is not just words—it is action. Day after day, he shows his care for these small creatures. He makes our city more beautiful and kind. I want to be like him, doing small things with great love.
