A Lesson from a Natural Disaster
Last summer, my city experienced a terrible rainstorm. I learned a very important lesson from it.
It was a Sunday afternoon. I was watching TV at home when the rain suddenly became very heavy. Soon the streets were full of water. My father called and told us to stay inside. We were safe at home, but we saw on the news that many people needed help. The next day, our neighbors and I went to help clean the streets. We worked together to move fallen branches and clean the mud.
This experience taught me that nature can be powerful, but people are stronger when we work together. I also learned that we should always be prepared for bad weather. Now my family has an emergency kit ready, and we listen to the weather report every day.2025~2026学年下学期八年级英语单元测试

第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)
根据短文内容,判断正误(正确"T",错误"F")。
Typhoons are one of the most powerful forces of nature. They are huge storms that form over warm ocean waters. When a typhoon comes, it brings strong winds and heavy rain.
The best time to prepare for a typhoon is before it arrives. Families should have an emergency kit (应急包) ready. This kit should include water, food, flashlights, and a first-aid kit. It's also important to listen to the weather report and follow safety advice.
When a typhoon hits, it's safest to stay indoors. People should stay away from windows and glass doors. If the wind becomes very strong, it's a good idea to stay in a small room without windows, like a bathroom. Never go outside during the typhoon, even if the wind seems to calm down. Sometimes there is a quiet period called the "eye" of the storm, but the strong winds will return.
After the typhoon passes, people need to be careful. There may be fallen power lines or broken glass on the streets. It's important to wait for news from the government before going out. And remember to help neighbors who may need assistance.
21. Typhoons form over cold ocean waters.
22. An emergency kit should include water, food, and flashlights.
23. It's safe to go outside during the "eye" of the storm.

On March 11, 2011, a terrible earthquake hit Japan. It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. The earthquake happened under the sea, so it also caused a huge tsunami (海啸).
When the earthquake started, Yuki was at school. She was in her classroom with her classmates. Their teacher immediately told everyone to get under their desks. "Drop, cover, and hold on!" the teacher shouted. Yuki felt scared, but she did as she was told. The shaking lasted for about six minutes. It felt like a very long time.
After the shaking stopped, the teacher led everyone to the playground. That's when they heard the warning on the loudspeaker: "Tsunami coming! Move to higher ground!" The school was near the coast, so they had to act fast. Yuki and her classmates ran up the hill behind their school. They could hear the sirens (警报) wailing all around them.
From the hill, Yuki looked back and saw something she would never forget. A huge wall of water was coming toward the town. It washed away cars, houses, and everything in its path. Yuki cried when she saw her neighborhood disappear under the water.

Can animals predict earthquakes This question has interested scientists for a long time. Many stories from around the world suggest that animals act strangely before an earthquake hits.
One famous example happened in China in 1975. In the city of Haicheng, people noticed many animals behaving unusually. Snakes came out of their holes in the middle of winter. Normally, snakes hibernate (冬眠) during cold weather, so this was very strange. Chickens refused to go into their coops (鸡笼). Dogs barked for no reason. Cows and horses seemed nervous and tried to break free from their fences.
Because of these signs, the government ordered people to leave their homes. Just hours later, a huge earthquake struck the city. Many buildings fell down, but most people were safe because they had already moved outside. This event made people believe that animals really can sense when a disaster is coming.
Scientists have several ideas about how animals might do this. Some think animals can feel small shaking in the ground that humans cannot feel. Others believe animals can sense changes in the air or in gases that come out of the ground before an earthquake. Animals also have much better hearing than humans, so they might hear sounds that we cannot hear.
However, not all scientists agree that animals can predict earthquakes. They say that animals act strangely for many different reasons. Sometimes what looks like a warning sign is just normal animal behavior. More research is needed to understand this mystery.
