Chinese New Year Painting, or nianhua in Chinese, is a kind of traditional painting to be

First Journey around Earth
It has been over 500 years since the first journey around the whole planet in 1521. Long
before the invention of trains and planes, many thought it was impossible. It nearly was. The
journey was started by Portuguese (葡萄牙的) sailor, Ferdinand Magellan, but he never saw it
finished.
Magellan was following in the footsteps of explorers (探险家) like Christopher Columbus.
He’d traveled from Spain to America in 1492 and encouraged others to take to the seas. But
Magellan’s journey was even more daring. A journey around the whole world would show
completely the still-questioned idea that the world was not flat, but round.
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain where he got support from the Spanish
King, Charles V. But Spanish sailors didn’t like being led by a Portuguese man.
After fighting storms, losing ships and many of his men turning against (反对) him and
returning home, Magellan was killed in the Philippines by local people .
After Magellan’s death, his group continued in the only ship that was left. Along the way,
they traveled across a new ocean and mapped new paths for European trade. For better or
worse, they had made the way for modern world trade. Sixty thousand miles later, and after
the death of 80 percent of those who took part, the journey had shown that the world could be
circled around.
The passage ( 航程 ) Magellan’s team went through, between the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans, was named after him: the Strait of Magellan. It is 570 kilometers long. His influence
on the world did not end there. In 1989, NASA named a spacecraft (宇宙飞船 ) after the
explorer and sent it to Venus (金星).
32. What does the underlined term “the still-questioned idea” refer to
A. The dream of finding new, flat lands.
B. The belief (信念) that Earth was round.
C. The idea of traveling on the sea for years.
33. What did Magellan die from during the journey
A. Bad weather.
B. Lost ships.
C. Fighting with local people in the Philippines.
34. How did Magellan’s journey influence the world
A. It discovered a new ocean on Earth.
B. It encouraged people to travel to Europe.
C. It created new paths for world trade.
35. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. Magellan’s historic (历史性) journey around the world and its influence .
B. The importance of mapping new paths for world trade.
C. The challenges during Magellan’s journey to South Asia.

One recent weekend, I decided to learn how to make jiaozi with my grandmother. I
thought it would be fun and easy at the very beginning, but soon it came to me that it wasn’t
as simple as it looked.
As first, I didn’t pay attention to the sharp (锋利的) knife while cutting vegetables. My
finger got cut because of my carelessness. Luckily, it wasn’t serious. Grandma was nervous,
and quickly helped me clean the cut. “My poor little girl! Be careful next time!” said
Grandma softly. Through the painful lesson, I learned the hard way that safety should always
come first.
After that accident, I continued working with Grandma. We made the dough (面团 ),
mixed the filling, and started shaping the dumplings. However, I kept making mistakes. Some
of my dumplings were too thick, others were not properly sealed (封闭), and some even had
too much filling, making them difficult to close. It was so discouraging, but Grandma kept
encouraging me.
Until noon, we had a plate full of dumplings—some are perfect, and some are a bit messy.
Dad ate my ugliest dumpling first. “Tastes better than it looks!” he laughed. Mom encouraged
me, “I think ______________________________. I am so proud of you!”
Now I understand that making jiaozi isn’t just about the final product; it is about
learning patience, having fun with my family, and improving through mistakes. Mistakes
aren’t signs of weakness. Instead, they should be viewed ( 看待 ) as stepping stones to
achievements.
