When I was six, a new family moved into the house next door. There was a girl, Frances, who was about my age. We became best friends soon. I was too young to notice what was really going on in her life, but my mother did.
Mom noticed that Frances never invited anyone into the rooms they lived in. Her mother went off to work very early in the morning and came back looking very tired. And her two older brothers wore dirty clothes and were never at home. Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small.
Mom never mentioned anything to me. But she once asked, “Would you mind if I give Frances some of your clothes ” I agreed. Frances seemed very thrilled.
Mom began to spend more time with Frances and me. She and I had always done kitchen jobs together, but now the three of us were making biscuits and washing up together. Frances was always willing to help, as long as Mom was there. And sometimes they would just sit together and talk while I was off doing something else.
That routine (日常事物) continued until we were both teenagers. But then her mother decided they were moving back to Ireland. We promised to write to each other.
One day, my mom called to say that a letter from Frances had arrived. “When I was four, my father died. My mother tried to make money. She ignored me. Your mom saved me. Without her love and attention, I would never have survived (渡过难关) my childhood. I have used your mother’s example as my guide to care for people around me.”
My mother taught me many things, but this was her most valuable lesson. Watching her example and seeing the life-changing results were powerful. We will never know how or when our acts of kindness will influence others, but it’s always better to try.
24.What do we know about Frances’ family from Paragraph 2
A.They were unhappy to come to a new place. B.They tried hard to avoid their neighbors.
C.They cared little about each other. D.They lived a very difficult life.
25.What does the underlined word “thrilled” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Proud. B.Excited. C.Calm. D.Confident.

A.Frances was a good helper. B.Frances was used to the routine.
C.Frances got on well with the author’s mom. D.Frances was good at doing kitchen jobs.
27.What can be the best title for the text
A.Teaching by example B.Lifelong friends
C.My mom’s life D.Being brave to try

Go to any movie theater or sports venue, and it’s obvious there’s an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply feeling while brushing shoulders with others. Researches have long backed up this sense of connection, but some aspects of the phenomenon remained unclear. Now, a new study is offering insight.
Writing in the journal Royal Society Open Science, Victor Chung of the cole Normale Supérieure in France and his team reported how they examined the matter by inviting strangers to watch videos together in same sex pairs.
Pairs of strangers watched three types of videos together: positive, negative, and neutral (中性的) with a curtain between them that was either open or closed. At the start of the experiment the researchers asked each participant whether they’d like to meet the other member of their pair again. After watching each video, participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the other participant.
The results showed the emotional films generated stronger responses than the neutral film. Crucially, the team said participants’ feelings of connectedness within the pairs was boosted when they experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between them open. The researchers said that whether or not the pairs could see each other had no impact on how positively or negatively they felt about the films.
“We found that silently watching emotional films together with another individual is associated with social bonding, even when this person is a stranger and without any verbal (口头的) communication,” said Chung, the study author.
The team added that the findings may help explain why people seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, “even participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions.” In other words, because emotion bonds us, and humans have a fundamental desire to belong, we’re up for experiences one might think we’d naturally want to avoid.
28.What does “the phenomenon” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Shared emotions bond people. B.Physical touch helps tackle stress.
C.A chance encounter leads to a friendship. D.Entertainment is a crucial part of human life.
29.How did the researchers get their findings
A.By analyzing participants’ emotions.
B.By comparing participants’ self-reports.
C.By documenting participants’ video responses.
D.By stimulating participants’ desire for interaction.
30.The study found that strong bonds were indeed created between pairs only when ______.
A.they were familiar with each other B.they watched neutral films together
C.they were aware of the presence of each other D.they could see each other while watching the films
31.What is presented in the last paragraph of the text
A.An interpretation of the findings. B.Potential implication of the findings.
C.Supporting evidence for the findings. D.The underlying logic behind the findings.
D
In the days before the Internet, critical thinking was the most important skill of informed citizens. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a psychologist at the Max Planck Institute of Human Development, and her colleagues, an even more important skill is critical ignoring.
As the researchers point out, we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete for our attention. They attract us with a lot of emotional and eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can expose us to profit-generating advertisements. Therefore,we are no longer customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention. To protect ourselves from this, Kozyreva advocates for learning the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers intentionally control their information environment to reduce exposure to false and low-quality information.
According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring comprises three strategies. The first is to design our environments, which involves the removal of low-quality yet hard-to-resist information from around. Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes. Likewise, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-grabbing items are kept out of sight. As with dieting, if one tries to bank on willpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it’s better to just keep them out of sight to begin with.
The next is to evaluate the reliability of information, whose purpose is to protect you from false and misleading information. It can be realized by checking the source in the mainstream news agencies which have their reputations for being trustworthy.
The last goes by the phrase “do not feed the trolls.” Trolls are actors who internationally spread false and hurtful information online to cause harm. It may be appealing to respond to them to set the facts straight, but trolls just care about annoying others rather than facts. So, it’s best not to reward their bad behaviour with our attention.
By sharpening our critical ignoring skills in these ways, we can make the most of the Internet while avoiding falling victim to those who try to control our attention, time, and minds.
32.What can we learn about the attention economy from paragraph 2
A.It offers little information. B.It features depressing stories.
C.It saves time for Internet users. D.It seeks profits from each click.
33.Why does the author mention dieters in paragraph 3
A.To discuss the quality of information
B.To prove the benefits of healthy food.
C.To show the importance of environments.
D.To explain the effectiveness of willpower.
34.What should we do to handle Internet trolls according to the text
A.Reveal their intention. B.Turn a deaf ear to them.
C.Correct their behaviour. D.Send hard facts to them.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.Reasons for critical thinking in the attention economy.
B.Practising the skill of critical ignoring in the digital age.
C.Maximizing the benefits of critical ignoring on the Internet.
D.Strategies of abandoning critical thinking for Internet users

Having a trusted friend, family member, or another resource to call on can relieve some of the everyday life stresses. They can be there to give advice or just support the decisions you’ve made that you feel are right for you.

Last Thursday when the competition exam ended, I changed two answers while the teacher was out answering a call. The eraser marks still stayed at the corner, where revising the answers turned the grade from 95 into 97 — this lying number — My family was really in great financial difficulty. Deep in my pencil case hid Jack’s draft paper, which dropped from his desk right at my feet, covered with his neat problem-solving steps.
That night at dinner, Mom handed me the last chicken leg, her fingertips still smelling of dish soap from the 24-hour diner night shift. “Principal Miller called”, she coughed, “all of the participants of the competition will attend the award ceremony next Monday, and as a winner, you’ll make a speech in front of all the audience.” I didn’t answer but just counted the pieces of cloth for repair on her apron (围裙), remembering her nighttime coughs during overtime shifts. My chopsticks tapped the bowl edge. The real winner should be Jack, who always stayed after class to explain equations (方程式) on the whiteboard. His score was 96.
Rain tapped against the classroom windows the next day. I found Jack in the empty classroom, chewing a dry bread at his desk. His glasses were foggy from the wet walk to school. “Congratulations,” he wiped his glasses, pulling his bag with holes showing the stuffing, “Dad’s lost his job, and I really need that scholarship… never mind.”
Moonlight fell on my speech paper titled “Honesty and Hard Work.” I remembered Jack helping me with math after class, his finger drawing numbers in the air.“ Like this,” he’d say, giving me his eraser when mine broke.
I couldn’t fall asleep all that night. An inner voice echoed: “Do what makes you sleep well.” I stood outside the teachers’ office early the next morning. Through the door crack, I saw Principal Miller’s coffee cup steaming.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

W: Hello, everybody. As you know, “Clean the Beach Day” is taking place next Sunday. And I’m sure most of you are familiar with what needs to be done, the rules, and the schedule, but let me review it once more.
So, first of all, clothing: since it’s still quite cold in March, you’ll definitely need to wear a pair of good waterproof boots. Make sure you don’t come in your sports shoes as those will get wet very easily. Waterproof trousers and a good jacket are also advisable.
Now, I’m sure you remember that you don’t need to bring protective gloves and big plastic bags, as the school will provide you with those at the beach before we start cleaning. During the event, there’ll be water and orange juice available if you’re thirsty, but if you think you might feel hungry while we’re actually collecting the rubbish, then you’d better bring some snacks with you, as there won’t be any food at that time. After we finish, however, a light lunch will be offered, and we’ll gather together and have a pleasant picnic on the beach!

根据文章第二段“Her mother went off to work very early in the morning and came back looking very tired. And her two older brothers wore dirty clothes and were never at home. Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small.(她妈妈一大早就出门上班,回来时看上去疲惫不堪。她的两个哥哥穿着脏衣服,还总是不在家。Frances总是饿着肚子,她的衣服也常常小得不合身)”可知,Frances的妈妈工作辛苦,哥哥们穿着脏衣服,Frances总是饿着且衣服不合身,这些都表明他们一家生活很艰难。故选D。
25.词义猜测题。根据文章第二段“Her mother went off to work very early in the morning and came back looking very tired. And her two older brothers wore dirty clothes and were never at home. Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small.(她妈妈一大早就出门上班,回来时看上去疲惫不堪。她的两个哥哥穿着脏衣服,还总是不在家。Frances总是饿着肚子,她的衣服也常常小得不合身)”可知,Frances的衣服太小,家庭生活很艰难;再根据划线单词上文“But she once asked, “Would you mind if I give Frances some of your clothes ” I agreed.(但有一次她问我:“要是我把你的一些衣服给弗朗西丝,你介意吗?”我同意了。)”可知,作者的妈妈打算送一些作者的衣服给Frances。由此可推测,对于生活条件不好的Frances来说,能得到衣服是一件开心、令人兴奋的事。选项B“excited”意为“兴奋的”,与此相符。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Mom began to spend more time with Frances and me. She and I had always done kitchen jobs together, but now the three of us were making biscuits and washing up together. Frances was always willing to help, as long as Mom was there. And sometimes they would just sit together and talk while I was off doing something else.(妈妈开始花更多时间和我还有Frances在一起。以前我和妈妈总是一起做厨房的活儿,但现在我们三个一起做饼干、洗碗。只要妈妈在,Frances总是很乐意帮忙。有时候,我去做别的事,她们俩就会坐在一起聊天)”可知,作者的妈妈花更多时间和Frances在一起,她们一起做各种事,还会一起聊天,这些都表明Frances和作者的妈妈相处得很好。故选C。
27.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“My mother taught me many things, but this was her most valuable lesson. Watching her example and seeing the life-changing results were powerful. We will never know how or when our acts of kindness will influence others, but it’s always better to try.(母亲教会了我许多东西,但这是她传授的最宝贵的一课。 故选A。

根据文章第三段中“After watching each video, participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the other participant.(观看每个视频后,参与者报告了他们的情绪和联系感,看完所有三个视频后,他们再次被问及对另一位参与者的感受。)”
根据文章第四段中“Crucially, the team said participants’ feelings of connectedness within the pairs was boosted when they experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between them open.(关键的是,研究团队表示,当参与者经历更强烈的情感时,他们之间的联系感会增强。然而,这种情况仅发生在参与者拉开窗帘观看电影时。)”可知,强烈的联系感仅在参与者能够看到彼此时产生。故选D。
31.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段中“The team added that the findings may help explain why people seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, ‘even participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions.’(研究团队补充说,这些发现可能有助于解释为什么人们会寻求产生强烈情感的群体活动,“甚至参加引发负面情绪的悲伤纪念活动”。)”

They attract us with a lot of emotional and eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can expose us to profit-generating advertisements. Therefore,we are no longer customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention.(正如研究人员指出的那样,我们生活在一个注意力经济中,互联网上的内容生产者在争夺我们的注意力。
根据第三段中“Likewise, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-grabbing items are kept out of sight. As with dieting, if one tries to bank onwillpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it’s better to just keep them out of sightto begin with.(同样,我们需要建立一个数字环境,让那些吸引眼球的东西远离我们的视线。就像节食一样,如果一个人试图依靠意志力不去点击引人注目的“新闻”,他肯定会失败。所以,最好一开始就把它们放在视线之外)”可推知,作者在第三段提到节食者,是为了强调我们需要建立一个让那些吸引眼球的东西远离我们的视线的数字环境,以此来表明环境的重要性。故选C项。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Trolls are actors who internationally spread false and hurtful information online to cause harm. It may be appealing to respond to them to set the facts straight, but trolls just care about annoying others rather than facts. So, it’s best not to reward their bad behaviour with our attention.(喷子是指故意在网上传播虚假和有害信息以造成伤害的行为者。回复他们澄清事实可能很有吸引力,但喷子只关心惹恼别人,而不是事实。所以,最好不要用我们的关注来奖励他们的坏行为)”可知,对付网络喷子,我们最好对他们充耳不闻。故选B项。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a psychologist at the Max Planck Institute of Human Development, and her colleagues, an even more important skill is critical ignoring.(但根据马克斯·普朗克人类发展研究所的心理学家阿纳斯塔西娅·科兹列娃和她的同事们的说法,在数字时代,一项更重要的技能是“批判性忽视”)”和第三段中“According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring comprises three strategies.(Kozyreva认为,“批判性忽视”包括三种策略)”以及后文对这三种策略的具体介绍可推知,所以本文主要讨论了在数字时代,需要练习“批判性忽视”技巧。故选B项。

66.Dear Frank,
I’m writing to express my heartfelt thanks for inviting me to watch Kung Fu Panda with you last Saturday evening at City Cinema. It was such a kind and thoughtful gesture.
The movie was truly amazing! I was deeply inspired by Po’s determination and optimism. Despite all the difficulties, he never gave up on his dream and eventually proved that belief and hard work can make anything possible. The action scenes were exciting, and the humor made me laugh a lot.
Thank you again for a wonderful evening. I hope we can watch another movie together soon!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

I took a deep breath and knocked on the principal’s door. Principal Miller’s coffee steam moved in the air as I showed my changed answers. “The real score should be 95,” I said, pointing at the faint eraser marks on the paper. “I changed two answers here and that’s how the grade went up to 97.” When I gave her Jack’s draft paper with the solution process written on it, she touched the sunlight on his handwriting. “Two wrongs don’t make a right,” she said, “but one brave act can fix two hearts.” Her pen added both our names — mine in blue ink, Jack’s in gold.
The ceremony arrived, and Principal Miller announced two scholarship winners: Jack and me. The crowd whispered until she raised my speech paper. “Look closely,” she said. Under the title “Honesty and Hard Work”, faint pencil marks showed where I’d written “Cheating” then erased it. “Growth is when mistakes become lessons,” she explained. Jack’s confused eyes met mine until Principal Miller pointed to his repaired backpack — His mother had mended the holes with cloth. “Some fix errors with erasers,” she said, “others mend hearts with threads.” When stage lights hit us, the 95 and 96 on our certificates blurred into one golden glow.
