Lima, the capital of Peru, is the world’s second largest desert city. The region is
water-stressed. The annual rainfall is less than 4 cm. Access to water is an ongoing problem for the residents in and around the South American capital.
When industrial engineer Abel Cruz was a boy, his weekly work was to climb down a
valley in the foothills of the Peruvian Andes to fetch the family’s water from a spring. “It was
downhill from the house, far away and steep,” he says. Cruz began dreaming up better ways to
collect water. Then he noticed that subtropical plants capture rain and mist with their wide leaves. Actually Lima doesn’t lack in humidity (湿度), averaging 83% year-round. Located in the
foothills of the Andean mountains, it is close to the Pacific Ocean, which ensures that blankets of dense fog roll in for three-quarters of a year. Eventually, Abel Cruz struck upon the idea of a fog net.
Each upraised net is 20 square metres, where micro-droplets of water suspended in the
foggy atmosphere condense (凝结) and drip down into collection tanks. Approximately 200 to 400 litres of water is collected daily from each net. Locals can fetch it in buckets for small-scale
farming. Working in Lima with support from the Creating Water Foundation, Cruz has installed
over 3, 600 nets on hillsides around the city to capture fog drifting in from the Pacific Ocean. Cruz raised funds for hundreds of nets in Peru with his revolutionary initiative Peruvians Without
Water. He aims to set up even more fog harvesters, and to treat the water to make it drinkable.
“The planet has less and less fresh water,” Cruz points out, “because the glaciers that are
natural reservoirs are disappearing. So we must find a way to accumulate and save water for times of drought.” The technology is life-changing for the poor households who normally have to rely
on water tanks being delivered to them. His approach ends extreme poverty and brings rural
development. Moreover, he is trying to bring healthy and clean water also to urban areas lacking water.
4 .Why does the author mention Cruz’s childhood experience in paragraph 2
A .To illustrate the urgency of reducing poverty.
B .To highlight his responsibility for the family.
C .To trace the origin of Cruz’s great invention.
D .To stress Lima’s terrible geographical conditions.
5 .What do we know about Cruz’s invention
A .It was inspired from subtropical plants.
B .It used collection tanks to condense water.
C .It lowered costs in building irrigation channels.
D .It solved the drinking water issue with fog harvesters.
6 .What may Abel Cruz’s efforts lead to
A .Guaranteeing crop harvests in Peru.
B .Promoting the recycle of water resources.
C .Ending poverty by improving traditional farming.
D .Improving the life quality for people in water-stressed areas.
7 .What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A .To describe the functions of an innovative fog-catcher.
B .To call people’s attention to the worsening water crisis.
C .To seek more support in raising funds for water collection.
D .To introduce Abel Cruz’s invention and its great significance.

One of the greatest challenges in caring for such intelligent animals as chimpanzees (猩猩) is providing them with enriching experiences. Every day, the chimpanzees at Project Chimps
receive morning and evening food-based enrichment devices, but caregivers are always looking for more ways to keep the chimps mentally engaged. With 79 chimpanzees, each with their
distinctive personality, care staff often find that different chimps react differently to new enrichment.
Last year, we began inviting musicians to perform for chimps to see what they may
respond. A violin performance received quite the response. Additional musicians were lined up to visit but the coronavirus has stopped the activities, which we hope to resume in the near future.
This past week, we brought an electric piano for the chimps to investigate. Some chimps,
like twins Buttercup and Clarisse, were immediately interested and could not wait to tap out a few notes. Others, like Emma, were more interested in trying to take it apart.
29-year-old Precious has very little tolerance for the piano. She sat off to the side for a few minutes, but eventually she decided that was enough. She called an end to the enrichment session by throwing a handful of waste at the piano. Receiving her message loud and clear, we removed the piano.
We could never have guessed how 33-year-old Luke would react to it. As with many retired lab chimpanzees, Luke has some anxiety issues. He seems particularly distrustful of anything new, including people, food, and enrichment. But when we presented the chimps with the piano, Luke was the first to investigate. We could not believe our eyes—this usually anxious chimpanzee
bravely chose to explore something new!
To us at Project Chimps, this is what it is all about: giving chimpanzees the freedom to choose. We are honored to be part of their journey.
8 .Why do chimpanzees respond differently to new enrichment
A .They are of different genders.
B .They have natural curiosities.
C .They are as intelligent as humans.
D .They have their unique characters.
9 .Who showed the least interest in the piano
A.Buttercup and Clarisse. B.Emma. C.Precious. D.Luke.
10 .What does the underlined word “resume” in Paragraph 2 mean
A .Continue. B .Suspend. C .Monitor. D .Regulate.
11 .What is the text mainly about
A .How caregivers care for the retired chimpanzees.
B .What care staff do to enrich chimpanzees’ daily life.
C .How chimpanzees are trained through various enrichment.
D .What Project Chimps does to observe and study wild chimps.

Digital technology has deeply transformed how we acquire and process information, but it
has also brought a less recognized challenge: cognitive offloading. The term refers to our tendency to rely heavily on digital devices to store knowledge, remember plans, and even make judgments, rather than using our own mental capacity. While convenient in the short term, growing evidence suggests that excessive cognitive offloading may gradually weaken our fundamental cognitive
abilities, especially memory and critical thinking.
Many people take it for granted that they can search for any information within seconds, so there is no need to memorize facts or figures. A recent study conducted by a team of European
psychologists supported this concern. The research tracked 360 college students over two
academic years. Students who constantly used digital devices to store routine information and
avoid memorization performed significantly worse in tests measuring working memory and
logical reasoning than those who preferred to remember key information manually. More
alarmingly, the decline was not temporary; it tended to persist even when participants tried to rely on their own memory again.
Researchers explain that human memory is like a muscle: it strengthens with use and
weakens with disuse. When we constantly outsource thinking to digital tools, our brain does not
fully engage in encoding and storing information. Over time, this reduces the brain’s ability to
focus, process complex problems, and form deep, long-lasting memories. However, experts do not advocate completely abandoning digital devices. Instead, they suggest a balanced approach: use
technology as a supplement, not a replacement, for mental activity.
The key is to maintain active cognitive engagement. For example, people can try to
remember directions before checking a map, or recall important schedules before turning to a
calendar app. By consciously reducing unnecessary cognitive offloading, individuals can protect and even improve their mental abilities while still enjoying the benefits of modern technology. As digital dependence continues to rise, finding this balance becomes increasingly vital for long-term cognitive health.
12 .What does the phrase “cognitive offloading” (in Para. 1) most probably mean
A .Transferring memory tasks to digital devices.
B .Improving cognitive abilities through technology.
C .Reducing screen time to protect mental health.
D .Organizing information in a more efficient way.
13 .What can we learn about the study mentioned in Paragraph 2
A .It lasted for more than three years.
B .It included over 500 college students.
C .It showed offloading affects memory negatively.
D .It proved digital devices improve test performance.
14 .What is experts’ attitude toward digital devices
A .Supportive. B .Objective. C .Disapproving. D .Doubtful.
15 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .Cognitive Abilities: A Key to Brain Health
B .Digital Technology: A Double-edged Sword
C .Cognitive Offloading: A Hidden Mental Risk
D .Active Thinking: A Way to Improve Memory
D. Active Thinking: A Way to Improve Memory

views in front of you.
I was on my second outdoor experience trip that every student had to go on. That year, we had a choice of what difficulty level we wanted: one through five. My friends and I had agreed
that one would make us seem lazy and that challenging ourselves would make for a good story. In choosing level two, we believed that it would still be a fun experience.
We were quickly proven wrong.
The further we drove into the White Mountains, the higher the walls on either side of the winding highway grew. I was still in awe of the mountains I had seen so many times before, but I couldn’t help feeling my heart shaking with anxiety. Soon I would have to leave the school bus
that brought 50 students out into the wilderness like every year before.
My group consisted of my friends, Riley and Ann, and six extremely athletic boys. We arrived at base camp lodge (木屋) first. After putting things aside and rearranging our bags, we made our way out into the wilderness.
The three of us girls were questioning if this was really a level two. The path was
unbelievably steep (陡峭) and rocky toward the top of the mountain where the first hut was
located. We were practically jogging in an attempt to keep up with the boys ahead of us. Before the trip, we were told to take breaks as often as we needed to drink water, but that wasn’t helping our pounding hearts and heavy breathing as much as it should have.
Then, 30 minutes into the most difficult hike the three of us had ever done, Riley slipped
and landed on her knee. After a few moments, we turned back down the mountain as it was
decided that Riley could not make the trip with us. We sat on the grass outside the lodge where we had started while Riley was brought inside to join the level one group. Ann and I exchanged
breathless glances, our cheeks red and wet with sweat.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Do you think we should ask if we could join the level one group too ” I asked Ann.

While here, you are able to have a taste of delicious local food, such as salted duck, and soak yourself in the rich cultural heritage, such as the Confucius Temple and the Zhanyuan
Garden, all in one day. Moreover, I take pride in my city’s green spaces that offer a peaceful escape from the daily rush.
There’s so much more to explore that words alone cannot do justice to its beauty. Thus, I sincerely invite you to come and discover it!
47 .Paragraph 1:
“Do you think we should ask if we could join the level one group too ” I asked Ann. “I
know you won’t,” she breathed out. “I won’t!” I said to myself, looking at the awesome mountains in the distance. Then we started up the steep and rocky path again, attempting to keep up with the boys. Our bags felt heavier; legs burned; backs hurt; tears threatened to spill over our
sweat-covered eyes. I wanted nothing more than to turn back and leave right then and there. But, I couldn’t; I didn’t want to be someone who gave up easily.
Paragraph 2:
The next days, although extremely tired, we kept on. Ann and I still found ourselves
lagging behind the boys. Instead of embarrassment, I felt as though I was gaining more out of the trip than anyone else. As the boys ran, Ann and I hung back and took breaks, drinking water and admiring the deep green valleys from high above. Level two was fun, too. And eventually we
made it to the destination. Facing the beautiful views in front of us, I exchanged a glance with Ann, both of us beaming.
