第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共12个小题;每小题2.5分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。
A
When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighbourhood——all of them too young to walk——and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighbourhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very profitable occupation.
My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes, I asked him why, and when he replied “Because it is beautiful, ” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff(僵硬) and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.
My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was particularly because of the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not prevented. I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so - called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and taking away from them any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.
21. What was the writer doing when her mother came home one day
A. Getting some babies together. B. Making some babies sit still.

A. Old and unpopular. B. Ugly and unnatural. C. Graceful and original. D. Dreamlike and gymnastic.
23. What did the writer think contributed to her success in art in particular
A. The ballet classes she had attended.
B. Her inborn talent and great efforts.
C. The lucky chance her parents gave her.
D. Her mother's support and understanding.
24. What's the main idea of the text
A. Children should be encouraged to be educated as early as possible.
B. Parents should discover and develop their young children's natural gift.
C. Children should be driven to develop their interest in art at an early age.
D. Parents should instruct their children to decide on a promising occupation.
Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada. Despite the mild weather, tourists should be prepared for rain which is practically part of the city's lifestyle.
With immigrants(移民)accounting for more than 40 percent of the population, Vancouver has a multicultural charm of its own. The local Chinatown, for example, is the largest in Canada and is an attraction that should not be missed. Asian cuisine is also particularly strong in Vancouver. Sushi lovers find the restaurant established by the inventor of California rolls, Hidekazu Tojo, in the city center of Vancouver. The Marine Building is another attraction in the downtown area. It was built in1930 and was the city's largest building for nine years. Although it lost its reputation relatively quickly, it is still one of the most popular structures in Vancouver and is well - known around the world.
Tourists should not miss making a trip to one of the beautiful beaches in the evening. Sunset Beach is particularly worth mentioning and its name shows its charm in advance. The beach is primarily known for its beautiful sunsets among the residents of Vancouver. The Celebration of Light Fireworks Festival also takes place every July and the various beaches are the ideal place to experience it.
Even if they do not visit the aquarium(水族馆), tourists still have the opportunity to admire Canada's sea life during a whale - watching tour. Wild killer whales or dolphins often do their rounds near the southern coast of Vancouver Island. It is easy to reach the island by boat, but it has more to offer than just a day's trip, as it is almost 500 kilometers long. Tourists who are interested in the First Nations find particular satisfaction here. Guided tours explain the indigenous(土著的)culture to visitors, particularly near the coast.

The release of GPT-4, the latest language model developed by OpenAI, has raised concerns about its potential impact on the job market. In the finance industry, fears around AI disruption(干扰) are particularly bitter, as many jobs involve the processing of data that could easily be done by machines.
This has raised questions about what it means for the CFA Institute, which offers chartered (受特许的) financial analyst qualifications (资格证书) to humans who pay a considerable fee to take the exams. If an AI algorithm (运算法则) can pass the CFA exam, it could threaten the CFA Institute’s revenue model and potentially affect several hundred thousand bank employees.
However, recent experiments have shown that GPT-4 is not yet capable of passing the CFA exam. The simulation scored only 8 out of a possible 24 points, demonstrating that faking logical thought is very different from fake reasoning through the application of rules and definitions. Humans still keep an edge in this area.
The CFA exam relies heavily on memorization and pattern matching, rather than processing the meaning of each question. This has allowed humans to continue to take the advantage at the exam compared to machines that rely on algorithms and logical deductions (逻辑推理).
While the development of advanced AI may pose a threat to some industries, including finance, it appears that in the case of CFA accreditation(认证), humans still have the upper hand. For now, those working in financial regulations and those responsible for setting exams in this field can breathe a small sigh of relief knowing their jobs are safe — at least for a little while longer.
In conclusion, the release of GPT-4 has sparked concerns about its potential to disrupt the job market, especially in finance. However, experiments have demonstrated that AI still has limitations, particularly in areas requiring fake reasoning through memorized answers. While this news may reassure those in the finance industry, there is no denying that AI technology continues to transform many aspects of work and life.
29. What is the CFA Institute
A. An organization that develops artificial intelligence algorithms.
B. An organization that offers financial analyst qualifications.
C. An organization that is threatened by the development of AI in finance.
D. An organization responsible for setting exams for bank employees.
30. Why are there concerns about GPT-4’s impact on the job market in finance
A. It could potentially replace humans in processing data.
B. It is capable of passing the CFA exam and taking over jobs.
C. The finance industry has been slow to adopt new technology.
D. Bank employees are actively protesting against AI adoption.
C. They have access to more resources during the exam. D. They have a deeper understanding of financial regulations.
32. How do recent experiments with GPT-4 affect the job market in finance
A. They demonstrate that humans' jobs are safe for the foreseeable future.
B. They suggest that banks will soon be replacing humans with AI.
C. They prove that AI has already surpassed humans in financial analysis.
D. They have no impact on the job market.

"Looking up, I find the moon bright; Bowing, in homesickness I'm drowned." When Ifeoma Gladys from Nigeria, first read the line from Li Bai's Thoughts on a Tranquil Night, the girl felt the poet's experiences and emotions. "I can't help but feel homesick," said Gladys, 22, who is studying Chinese Language and Literature at Southwest University.
From then on, the Nigerian girl fell in love with ancient Chinese poetry. 33 For example, in Li Bai's poem Hard Is the Way of the World, Gladys felt the ambition and faith of the poet. While reading Cao Cao's A Short Song, she learned that life is short and thus we should let go of the difficulties we couldn't overcome and value the present. 34 In her eyes, it is how it can travel over the mountains and spread from the ancient past to the present, but never change its original intention, keeping its truth and emotional weight.
"This is what many popular novels and online articles are unable to do," said the Nigerian girl. 35 For example, Li Bai wrote, "Heaven has made us talents; we're not made in vain. A thousand gold coins spent, more will turn up again." About 1,000 years later, Goethe, a German poet, would say something quite similar -- 36 "Behind the beautiful poems, I discovered the wisdom of the Chinese people, the charm of Chinese culture, and the worldwide basis of Chinese culture as well," said Gladys.
Now, the girl hopes to become a professional translator. 37
