For decades, beluga whales, known for their white skin and gentle nature, have been
beloved symbols of Canada’s marine life. Unfortunately, a heartbreaking crisis in Ontario has
exposed the broken bond between humans and animals: 30 captive (被囚禁的) belugas at
Marineland, once famous but now ruined by bankruptcy, have been abandoned and are struggling to survive.
Marineland, located by Niagara Falls, shut down in 2024 due to rising debts. Without
income for whale care, the park could no longer provide proper care for its 30 belugas. Most were born in captivity; consequently, they lack essential survival skills, making their release into the
wild a death sentence.
In 2025, in a desperate attempt to save the belugas, the park begged the Canadian
government to allow their transfer to a foreign marine facility — a last hope for their safety.
Unexpectedly, however, federal officials turned down the request flatly. They cited laws that ban the use of cetaceans for entertainment, arguing that relocating the whales would only keep them confined (受限) in tanks, which went against the spirit of the law.
This refusal put the park in a cruel dilemma: without support or relocation approval, it might have to euthanize the whales. Once kept for human amusement, these belugas now face
being forgotten — a tragic “selective abandonment,” unlike well-known species that draw public concern.
Above all, their suffering reveals a painful truth: humans often use animals for pleasure and profit, only to cast them aside when they are no longer useful. In fact, protecting animals
means keeping our promise to care for those we have taken in, especially when they are at their most vulnerable. These belugas did not choose to be confined to tanks; they were brought into captivity by humans. Thus, we owe them a chance to live a decent life, not a lonely and
unnecessary death.
24 .Why are the belugas at Marineland unable to survive in the wild
A .They are physically too weak for the wild. B .They are afraid of human activities.
C .The wild ocean is badly polluted. D .They lack basic survival skills.
25 .Why did the Canadian government turn down the relocation request
A .It conflicted with the spirit of related laws. B .The cost of relocation was too high.
C .The foreign facilities were not safe. D .The whales might face a death sentence.
26 .What does the underlined phrase “selective abandonment” most probably mean
A .Giving up animals for economic reasons.
B .Deserting animals in a careful way.
C .Ignoring some animals while caring for others.
D .Abandoning animals without official permission.
27 .What message does the author mainly want to convey
A .Animals should never be kept in captivity.
B .Humans must take responsibility for the animals they use.
C .Governments should pass stricter animal protection laws.
D .Marine parks should be closed for ecological reasons.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Play is a slim yet richly layered novel by Rick Donahoe. The story follows Stewart Waldon, a man who, after a life-changing medical diagnosis, heads to
the Pacific Northwest with a single goal: to end his life on his own terms. He spends days camping roughly, living off the land and reflecting on his existence. But an unexpected disturbance thwarts his plan. Ready to give life another chance, Stewart finds work at a nearby ranch — a decision that ultimately transforms his life.
There, he becomes engaged in ranch work and falls for Annie, the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Yet his newfound happiness is soon threatened by rising tensions over the fate of
old-growth forests. Ned, the elderly ranch owner, holds deep respect for the land and believes in responsible management. His son Butch, however, sees only the money that logging and land
access would bring. Viewing Stewart as yet another obstacle, Butch becomes very unfriendly toward him, especially as Stewart draws closer to Annie. As conflicts intertwine (交织) across generations, ideologies, and romance, the story steadily advances toward a violent outbreak.
Donahoe’s cast of characters is generously drawn, working through familiar struggles
layered within this compact narrative. The writing is lyrical (抒情的), with comfortably paced prose (散文) that beautifully captures the natural landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The book touches on hot-button issues such as logging and ecological conservation, but Donahoe’s focus remains firmly on good storytelling. His background in resource conservation and his lived
experience in a mill-town community lend the story a powerful sense of reality. He clearly cares about every word and the distinct shade of meaning it carries.
For readers who favour good writing as much as a good story, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play is an easy, satisfying choice. It gives off a timeless atmosphere that will deeply resonate (共鸣).

B .His focus on hot-button issues like logging.
C .His personal experience in a mill-town community.
D .His generously drawn cast of characters.
31 .What is the best title for the passage

It was a sunny Friday morning in Socastee, as 80-year-old John Farr put on his bicycle gear (装备) outside Habitat for Humanity of Horry County ReStore.
“Here we are just cranking it out,” laughed Farr, as he prepared for his 800-mile Bike 2 Build ride. “Spending the whole day outside like that is really a nice experience.” This was his 20th and the longest ride for Habitat for Humanity.
Farr traveled from his hometown to Chicago in the past, as well as other shorter rides. His wife Catherine said he even rode coast to coast, but he was accompanied by a friend. For this
journey, Farr was riding alone. He said it was important to spread awareness for the organization. “I think a family that lives in a decent home has a crack at a better life,” said Farr. “I think Habitat for Humanity is a real foundation-building organization, a real contributor to the welfare of our
nation.”
Farr’s 14-day trip started in Horry County on Friday morning. For his first leg, he planned
about 70 miles daily. He said he hoped to average about 10 miles for each hour he was pedaling
“I’m really into wildlife,” said Farr. “So I’m looking for birds. I’ll stop for road kill. I’m sort of a wacky (古怪的) person, maybe.”
He said it took a few days to get settled on his bike. He said bicycling away from roads with heavy traffic could be difficult. But it was a task he was willing to take on, as he tried to inspire
others. “I’m certainly not superhuman or anything. I’ve had a hip replacement. I’ve had heart surgery. I’ve had prostate cancer,” explained Farr.
Starting as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in his hometown of Clearfield County,
Pennsylvania, he’s now president of his chapter. Farr raised more than $23, 000 last year and more than $100, 000 in his two-decade rides.
32 .Why did John Farr take the 800-mile journey
A .To encourage environmental protection. B .To recover better from a heart operation.

33 .What does the underlined phrase “has a crack at” in paragraph 3 mean
A .Has a chance of. B .Makes little impact on.
C .Means the same as. D .Pays no attention to.

Did you know that climbing trees is one of the most natural and fascinating skills for giant pandas From a young age, these adorable pandas start learning the art of tree climbing. 36 Typically, panda cubs (幼崽) begin learning how to climb at about 4 to 5 months old, and by the time they’re around 6 months, they’re already skilled climbers, able to climb tree trunks with great
ease.
37 When a panda cub is left alone while its mother searches for bamboo nearby, it faces the threat of predators. But no worries! The cubs can quickly climb up a tree to escape
danger, as climbing provides a safe refuge high off the ground. What’s more, trees are the perfect spot to take in some sunshine. 38
Giant pandas’ liking for climbing trees is a natural behavior closely related to their body structure and living environment. When climbing trees, pandas have a unique technique. They wrap their front paws (爪) tightly around the tree trunk or branches, and use their powerful hind feet to push themselves upwards. 39 This allows them to climb with stability and speed. These little performers are truly impressive in their agility (灵活性)!
As they grow older, though, you’ll notice that they climb less and less. That’s because
grown-up pandas are all about conserving energy — after all, they’re always feeding on bamboo and need to save their strength for their next meal! 40 And you’ll more often find them
moving around, enjoying the peace and quiet of their habitat.
A .Tree-climbing is essential for survival, especially for wild pandas.
B .It takes a certain amount of strength for them to climb trees.
C .So, seeing an adult panda climbing trees is a rare treat.
D .Pandas mainly survive on bamboo and plants.

F .It helps pandas grow strong and healthy.

The school year was coming to a close, and the air was filled with anticipation for the
upcoming annual school fair. Our class had eagerly decided to host a bake sale, with each student ready to contribute their favorite recipes.
Spirits were high. Every spare moment was devoted to perfecting the art of baking, from experimenting with different flavors to mastering the art of cake decorations. Our classroom became a hub of activity, filled with the sweet scent of freshly baked goods and the sound of laughter and chatter.
The day of the fair finally arrived, and our table was beautifully decorated with a
mouthwatering baked goods. There were freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, warm and crispy, alongside homemade fruit pies. The attractive scent was irresistible, and it wasn’t long before a long line of students and parents formed, their eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
However, as the morning wore on, we couldn’t help but notice that the neighboring class’s booth (摊位) was appealing to a significantly larger crowd. There was a buzz of excitement
surrounding their table, and it was clear that they were onto something special.
Among our class, a sense of healthy competition began to emerge. Sarah, our natural leader,
suggested we step up our game. “We need to find out what they’re doing differently and improve our booth,” she said with determination. Out of curiosity, we sent our most inquisitive member, Mark, to investigate.
Soon, Mark returned with good news. “They’ve got a ‘Taste of the World’ theme going on
over there,” Mark reported. “They’re serving up a variety of international desserts, and it’s quite the hit!”
We were intrigued by the idea and asked Mark for more details. He went on to explain that the students had gone the extra mile by dressing up in traditional costumes from the countries they
were representing. “It’s like a cultural feast for the senses,” he added with enthusiasm.

M: Ah, good afternoon, Professor Muller. I’ve almost finished preparing my presentation for your class, but I’m not really satisfied with it. Could you give me some advice
W: I’ll be happy to. What topic did you choose
M: It’s about methods of predicting earthquakes, but so far it’s just a lot of facts and figures. How can I make it more interesting and easy to understand
W: Maybe you could use some computer graphs and pictures to help the class make sense of your points.

W: Well, it’s not quite as comfortable as the room we’ve been in for the past fortnight.

next day. It’s worrying.
W: That sounds familiar. I read that around 85 percent of kids at her age have their own device now. Some schools are trying to help by limiting tablet use during the school day, even taking them away if they appear during lessons.

M: Good afternoon, dear listeners. In today’s program, I’d like to talk about a common
exercise. Many people love running early in the morning. Why Actually it has many benefits.
Not only will you begin a day more relaxed, but also you’ve already had a sense of achievement. If you’re also eager to enjoy the benefits of a morning run, try these. First, getting ready for a
painful start. To many people, getting up early in the morning can be a great pain, especially in
cold winter days. So early to bed, early to rise, and make it a habit. Of equal importance is to keep an open mind. Even if you’ve made enough preparation and determination, there are still times,
when you want to quit. My advice is to accept the setback and instead of giving up, keep going. Another helpful way is to find someone to be together with you. This can make things more
interesting. He or she not only gives you company, but also serves as a monitor.

根据第二段中的“Most were born in captivity; consequently, they lack essential survival skills, making their release into the wild a death sentence.(大多数白鲸是圈养出生的,因此它们缺乏基本的生存技能,将它们放归野外无异于死刑。)”
Unexpectedly, however, federal officials turned down the
request flatly. They cited laws that ban the use of cetaceans for entertainment, arguing that
relocating the whales would only keep them confined (受限) in tanks, which went against the
故选 A 项。
Once kept for human amusement, these belugas now face
Above all, their suffering reveals a painful truth: humans often use animals for pleasure and profit, only to cast them aside when they are no
longer useful. In fact, protecting animals means keeping our promise to care for those we have
taken in, especially when they are at their most vulnerable.(最重要的是,它们的遭遇揭示了一个残酷的真相:人类常为娱乐和利益利用动物,无用时便将其抛弃。

Ned, the elderly ranch owner, holds deep respect for the land and believes in responsible management. His son Butch, however, sees only the money that logging
and land access would bring.(年迈的牧场主内德十分尊重这片土地,主张负责任的管理。 故选 A。
根据第三段“His background in resource conservation and his lived experience in a mill-town community lend the story a powerful sense of reality.(他在资源保护方面的背景以及在磨坊镇社区的生活经历赋予了故事强烈的现实感)”可知,个人经历是现实感的主要来
源。故选 C。
For readers who favour good writing as much as a
good story, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play is an easy, satisfying choice. It gives off a
timeless atmosphere that will deeply resonate.(对于既喜欢好故事又喜欢好文笔的读者来说,

根据第三段“I think a family that lives in a decent home has a crack at a better life (我认为,住在体面房子里的家庭, 更好的生活)” 可推知,住在体面房子里的家庭,会“有机会/有可能”过上更好的生活。“has a crack at”与“Has a chance of (有 的机会)”意思最接近。故选 A。
根据第四段“For his first leg, he planned about 70 miles daily. He said he hoped to average about 10 miles for each hour he was pedaling (踩踏板) . (在第一阶段,他计划每天骑行约 70 英里。他说,他希望自己每小时的平均骑行速度能达到 10 英里)”可知,他计划每天骑行 70 英里,平均每小时 10 英里,因此每天需要骑行 7 小时。故选 B。
35 .推理判断题。根据第五段 “He said bicycling away from roads with heavy traffic could be difficult. But it was a task he was willing to take on, as he tried to inspire others.(他说避开交通繁忙的道路骑自行车可能很困难。但这是他愿意承担的任务,因为他试图激励他人)” 可知, Farr 为期 14 天的自行车路线避开了交通流量大的道路。故选 D。
