For centuries, scientists have peered through microscopes to understand the basic units of life. Now, they’re proposing something far more ambitious: creating complete virtual copies of human cells — what they call artificial intelligence virtual cells (AIVCs) — that can be studied, controlled, and tested with the power of artificial intelligence.
To understand why this is a great undertaking, consider what makes cells complex. Every human cell contains roughly 42 million protein molecules and 20,000 different genes, all
interacting in complicated ways we’re still struggling to fully comprehend. These components
don’t operate in isolation — they form vast networks of interactions that can dramatically change based on tiny adjustments.
Now, two revolutionary advances are here to make virtual cells possible: the explosion of biological data collection methods and dramatic improvements in artificial intelligence. Modern laboratory techniques can generate enormous datasets about cellular components and behavior, with the volume of data doubling every six months.
The possible applications of such a system can be transformative. Imagine a future where
doctors could create a “digital twin” of your cells — a virtual copy that would let them test
different treatments on a computer before giving them to you. This could be particularly
revolutionary for cancer treatment, where doctors could simulate (模拟) how different
combinations of drugs might affect your cancer cells, potentially avoiding harmful side effects and finding the most effective treatment more quickly.
However, the benefits would extend far beyond individual patient care. Cancer biologists could use these virtual cells to better understand how specific genetic mutations
transform healthy cells into unhealthy ones. Developmental biologists could track how cells
change as organisms grow, potentially uncovering new ways to treat age-related diseases.
Microbiologists could model viral infections to predict not just how viruses affect individual cells but how they might impact entire organs or systems.
Emma Lundberg, associate professor of bioengineering and pathology at Stanford, says,
“This project requires cooperation across scientific fields, industries and nations, and we
understand that fully functional models might not be available for a decade or more. With today’s rapidly expanding AI capabilities and massive datasets, the time is ripe for us to unite to reach for the stars.”
24 .What does the underlined phrase “in isolation” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A .Innovatively. B .Complicatedly. C .Physically. D .Separately.
25 .How could doctors mainly use the virtual cell system
A .Match healthy cells for patients. B .Test possible treatments in advance.
C .Create real copies of healthy cells. D .Teach robots to conduct surgery.
26 .What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A .Other potential applications of virtual cells. B .Enormous benefits of individual patient care.
C .How scientists in medicine cooperate together. D .How some diseases are detected and prevented.
27 .What is the main purpose of Emma Lundberg’s words in the last paragraph
A .To call for joint efforts to complete the project.
B .To remind scientists to wait for the time to start.
C .To warn against spending much time on the goal.
D .To acknowledge current transformative advances.

A typical single-family house is encircled by green, its shrubs (灌木) and plants sitting just under windows and hugging external walls. It’s an image that California is trying to get
homeowners to rethink as the state’s risk of extreme wildfires grows.
One year after the fast-moving Eaton and Palisades Fires destroyed more than 16,000
structures in Los Angeles, California is drafting the toughest statewide rules in the country for
vegetation. In areas at risk of wildfires, homeowners would be required to clear some or all ofthe plants within five feet of their house, depending on what regulators decide. Well-maintained trees would still be allowed. The idea, called Zone Zero, is to prevent plants and flammable items from catching fire during a wildfire, spreading flames to the house and the surrounding neighborhood.
Still, the pushback has been strong, even in the Los Angeles area neighborhoods where so many lost homes. In public meetings, homeowners have voiced concerns about losing greenery
and shade, as well as the cost of clearing the vegetation. Some say they believe plants saved their homes by acting as a buffer (缓冲), though many scientific studies show that vegetation increases the risk a building will burn. The new defensible space rules will affect about 17% of buildings in California.
Max Moritz, wildfire specialist at UC Santa Barbara, is one of the few fire experts who say that green plants may not pose a risk to houses and that more research needs to be done. Greener plants, which hold water in their leaves, are harder to ignite. He agrees that some plants, like
highly flammable juniper and cypress, should not be allowed, nor should plants with dead leaves or dry branches.
“The really important aspect to the plants is the dead material,” he says. “If most
homeowners are just going to let dead material accumulate in Zone Zero anyway, then it makes sense that there shouldn’t be any plants in Zone Zero.”
28 .What is California’s concern about typical single-family houses
A .They are easy to catch fire. B .They need routine maintenance.
C .They are packed closely together. D .They can’t resist extreme weather.
29 .Why does the author mention Los Angeles in paragraph 3
A .To illustrate the severity of wildfires.
B .To show strong objections to the new rules.
C .To emphasize public concerns about wildfires.
D .To indicate the widespread effect of the new rules.
30 .According to Moritz, what is the key to preventing wildfires in Zone Zero
A .Clearing away green plants. B .Watering plants more often.
C .Getting rid of dead material in time. D .Doing more research on plants.
31 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .Wildfires: A Deadly threat to California
B .Zone Zero: A New Way to Maintain Plants
C .California is Drafting Toughest Rules for Plants
D .Experts are Divided on the Functions of Greenery

In the Bolivian Amazon, the wide grasslands and calm lakes around Lake Rogaguado and Lake Ginebra appear untouched. Yet research now shows that these landscapes were shaped for centuries by people who learned to live with a challenging environment. Their achievements,
hidden beneath the soil, are helping scientists understand how humans and nature once supported each other and how they still can today.
Recent investigations combined on-the-ground surveys with LiDAR mapping to uncover
ancient settlements dating from 600 to 1400 CE. At Paquio, evidence shows a gradual shift from simple living to organized farming. People built canals to guide seasonal floods, created raised
fields to grow crops, and left behind food remains that reveal a steady improvement in farming
and daily life. At Jasschaja, later communities expanded this system, managing nearby forests and increasing crop diversity. Together, these sites show a long tradition of adapting to climate and
water cycles rather than resisting them.
Across the region, unusual patterns — circles, straight lines, and long platforms — are
clearly visible from above. These shapes are not natural. They are large-scale earthworks designed to control water, improve soil, and create stable places to live in a landscape that can shift
dramatically between rainy and dry seasons. Their variety suggests generations of experimentation, reflecting both perseverance (毅力) and creativity.
Investigations also show that people combined fishing, hunting, and farming to form a
balanced diet. Remains of fish and small mammals reveal how closely their survival depended on understanding rich wetland resources.
Today, Cayubaba and Movima communities still live in these areas. Their knowledge of seasons, plants, and wildlife offers researchers valuable guidance. Through cooperation, local
residents and scientists are protecting cultural sites and supporting conservation programs in the surrounding wetlands.
As the Amazon faces rising deforestation (毁林) and climate pressure, the Bolivian
Amazon provides a reminder; long-term survival comes from working with nature’s rhythms. The ancient systems found here suggest that sustainable living is not a modern invention but a lesson carried forward from those who shaped the land with care.
32 .Why are Paquio and Jasschaja mentioned in paragraph 2
A .To illustrate the challenges for early settlers.
B .To compare the lifestyles ofthe two communities.
C .To provide proof of adaptive ancient practices.
D .To list the advantage of ancient farming methods.
33 .What do recent investigations reveal
A .Farming mattered most to ancient life.
B .People survived on nature skillfully.
C .Seasonal variation shaped the landscape.
D .Wetland resources were richer than expected.
34 .What role does the Bolivian Amazon play
A .A testing ground for new research.
B .A birthplace of ancient civilization.
C .A living example of sustainable living.
D .A pioneer in modern conservation efforts.
35 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .Lessons from the Past: How to Live with Nature
B .Ancient Wisdom Protects the Amazon’s Biodiversity
C .Technology Uncovers Secrets ofthe Bolivian Wetlands
D .Forgotten Cities: A Witness to Bolivia’s Lost Civilizations

39
It might seem counterintuitive, but taking breaks actually improves concentration. Working for hours without stopping leads to brain fatigue. This allows your mind to rest and recover for a few minutes. After a short walk or a stretch, you will find it easier to return to your work with a
fresh mind and better energy.
Limit your use of technology.
Notifications from social media are major distractions. Try to put your phone in another room or use apps that block distracting websites. 40 By removing these digital
temptations, you can give your full attention to the task you need to do.
A .Take regular breaks to recharge.
B .Use a timer to manage your sessions.
C .Try to divide a big job into several manageable parts.
D .Here are some effective tips to help you boost your focus.
E .Concentration is a skill that requires constant practice every day.

The old, leather-bound diary lay hidden at the bottom of a dusty box in the attic (阁楼).
Fifteen-year-old Mia was about to give up her search for Christmas decorations when her fingers brushed against its rough, grainy surface. Curious, she opened it. The yellowish pages were filled with elegant handwriting that spoke of another time. It was her grandmother’s diary, dating back
to when she was a teenager herself.
Mia sat on the dusty floor and began to read, completely absorbed by the words. The entries vividly described her grandmother Clara’s dreams of becoming a painter, a secret she had never
shared with anyone in the family. Clara wrote about her favorite hidden spot by the lake, where
she would sketch for hours, and her fear that her practical family would never understand her
artistic passion. The last entry was particularly poignant: “I have decided to hide my paintings and my dreams away. Perhaps one day, someone will find them and understand.”
Mia was deeply moved. She had always known her grandmother as a kind, quiet woman
who had worked in a bakery her whole life. The vibrant, ambitious girl in the diary was a stranger. A sharp, sweet ache filled Mia’s chest. In the attic’s silent dust, the final diary entry felt like a
direct, quiet call meant just for her. She closed the diary gently, her mind already mapping the attic’s shadowy corners. At that moment, Mia knew what she had to do next.
She spent the following two days turning the attic upside down — moved old boxes,
checked behind furniture, and looked through ever corner — determined to find Clara’s hidden paintings. The attic was full of memories, and Mia felt as if she was getting close to her
grandmother with every step she took.
Paragraph 1:
Finally, behind a loose board in the attic wall, Mia discovered a stack of canvases.

workshop is called “Adjusting”. After years in a more structured classroom environment, it is easy to feel lost in college. In this session, we’ll talk about the key skills and habits that lead to success at university. As you might guess, we’re targeting first-year students with this offering. The
second workshop is “Time and Life”. You will learn how to plan your time, stop putting things
off, and keep a good balance between study and fun. Next, we have “Speaking and
Understanding”. It helps students talk with teachers and classmates, especially for foreign
students. Later, we host guided walks and skill-building sessions. It teaches you simple ways to relax, breathe deeply, and feel peaceful during tests. Our last one is “Keep Your Motivation”. It’s for students who are doing long research projects and need to stay focused. If you want to know more, come and see us at the Guidance Office. We’re happy to help!

根据划线词下文“they form vast networks of interactions that can dramatically change based on tiny adjustments (它们形成了巨大的互动网络,可以根据微小的调整产生巨大的变化。)”
Imagine a future where doctors could create a “digital twin” of your cells — a virtual copy that would let them test different treatments on a computer before
giving them to you.
However, the benefits would extend far beyond individual patient care. Cancer biologists could use these virtual cells to better understand how specific genetic
mutations (基因突变) transform healthy cells into unhealthy ones. Developmental biologists
could track how cells change as organisms grow, potentially uncovering new ways to treat
age-related diseases. Microbiologists could model viral infections to predict not just how viruses
affect individual cells but how they might impact entire organs or systems. 故选 A。
Emma Lundberg, associate professor of bioengineering and
pathology at Stanford, says, “This project requires cooperation across scientific fields, industries
and nations, and we understand that fully functional models might not be available for a decade or more. With today’s rapidly expanding AI capabilities and massive datasets, the time is ripe for us to unite to reach for the stars.”
28 .A 29 .B 30 .C 31 .C
根据第一段“A typical single- family house is encircled by green, its shrubs (灌木) and plants sitting just under windows and hugging external walls. It’s an image that California is trying to get homeowners to rethink as the state’s risk of extreme wildfires grows. (典型的单户住宅被绿色环绕,灌木和植物就位于窗户下方,紧贴外墙。随着加州面临极端野火的风险增加,加州正试图让房主重新考虑这一现象)”以及第二段“In areas at risk of wildfires,
homeowners would be required to clear some or all ofthe plants within five feet of their house,
depending on what regulators decide. Well-maintained trees would still be allowed. The idea,
called Zone Zero, is to prevent plants and flammable items from catching fire during a wildfire,
spreading flames to the house and the surrounding neighborhood.
故选 A。
根据第三段“Still, the pushback has been strong, even in the Los Angeles area neighborhoods where so many lost homes. In public meetings, homeowners have voiced concerns about losing greenery and shade, as well as the cost of clearing the vegetation. Some say they
believe plants saved their homes by acting as a buffer (缓冲), though many scientific studies show that vegetation increases the risk a building will burn.
根据倒数第二段“Max Moritz, wildfire specialist at UC Santa Barbara, is one of the few fire experts who say that green plants may not pose a risk to houses and that more research needs to be done. Greener plants, which hold water in their leaves, are harder to ignite. He agrees
that some plants, like highly flammable juniper and cypress, should not be allowed, nor should
plants with dead leaves or dry branches.
really important aspect to the plants is the dead material,” he says. “If most homeowners are just
going to let dead material accumulate in Zone Zero anyway, then it makes sense that there
shouldn’t be any plants in Zone Zero.”
One year after the fast-moving Eaton and Palisades Fires destroyed more than 16,000 structures in Los Angeles, California is drafting the toughest statewide rules in
the country for vegetation. In areas at risk of wildfires, homeowners would be required to clear some or all ofthe plants within five feet of their house, depending on what regulators decide.
Well-maintained trees would still be allowed. The idea, called Zone Zero, is to prevent plants and flammable items from catching fire during a wildfire, spreading flames to the house and the
surrounding neighborhood.

根据原文第二段“At Paquio, evidence shows a gradual shift from simple living to organized farming. People built canals to guide seasonal floods, created raised fields to grow crops, and left behind food remains that reveal a steady improvement in farming and daily life. At Jasschaja, later communities expanded this system, managing nearby forests and increasing crop diversity.(在帕奎奥遗址,有证据表明(当地居民的生活)从简单的生存模式逐步转向了有组织的农耕模式。人们开凿运河疏导季节性洪水, 修筑高田种植作物,遗留的食物残渣也能印证其农耕技术与日常生活水平的稳步提升。而在贾沙哈遗址, 后期的社群进一步完善了这一体系,不仅对周边森林加以管护,还增加了作物的品种多样性。)” 及“Together, these sites show a long tradition of adapting to climate and water cycles rather than resisting them.(这些遗址共同表明,这里存在着一种长期适应气候和水循环而非与之对抗的传统。)”
Together, these sites show a long tradition of adapting to
climate and water cycles rather than resisting them.(这些遗址共同表明,这里存在着一种长期适应气候和水循环而非与之对抗的传统。)”及 第三段“They are large-scale earthworks designed to control water, improve soil, and create stable places to live in a landscape that can shift dramatically between rainy and dry seasons.(这些是大型人工土方工程,旨在调控水源、改良土 壤,并在这片雨季与旱季气候剧变的土地上,打造出宜居的稳定居所。)”

As the Amazon faces rising deforestation and climate
pressure, the Bolivian Amazon provides a reminder; long-term survival comes from working with nature’s rhythms. The ancient systems found here suggest that sustainable living is not a modern
invention but a lesson carried forward from those who shaped the land with care.(当亚马逊面临日益严重的毁林现象和气候压力时,玻利维亚亚马逊地区为人们敲响了警钟:长期的生存源于顺应自然的节律。
Their achievements, hidden beneath the soil, are helping
scientists understand how humans and nature once supported each other and how they still can
以及最后一段“The ancient systems found here
suggest that sustainable living is not a modern invention but a lesson carried forward from those
who shaped the land with care.(在这里发现的古老生态体系表明,可持续的生活方式并非现代的创新产物,而是一份由那些用心塑造这片土地的先辈们传承下来的智慧经验。)” 可知,

67 .范文
Finally, behind a loose board in the attic wall, Mia discovered a stack of canvases. Her
heart raced as she carefully pulled them out. The paintings, though dusty, were vibrant — scenes of the lake, sunsets, and portraits filled with emotion. Each stroke told a story of a young girl’s
unspoken dreams. Mia wiped away a tear, feeling as if she had finally met the real Clara. She decided then and there that these paintings would not stay hidden any longer.
On Christmas morning, the family gathered in the living room. After exchanging gifts, Mia stood up nervously. “I have one more gift for Grandma,” she said. She unveiled the restored
paintings, now framed and hung along the wall. Clara’s eyes widened, then filled with tears. “I
thought I’d lost these forever,” she whispered, touching a painting of the lake. The room fell
silent, then erupted in applause. That Christmas, Clara’s long-hidden art became her family’s most cherished treasure, and Mia learned that some dreams are only waiting to be found.
