Ancient Civilizations and Ruins
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu, site of ancient Inca ruins located about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of
Cuzco, Peru, in the Cordillera de Vilcabamba of the Andes Mountains. It is situated above the
Urubamba River valley in a narrow ridge between two sharp peaks — Machu Picchu (“Old Peak”) and Huayna Picchu (“New Peak”) — at an elevation of 7,710 feet (2,350 meters). One of the few major pre-Columbian ruins found nearly complete, Machu Picchu was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.
The Maya
At its height, the Maya empire extended throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, modern-day
Guatemala, Belize, and parts of Mexico, making it one of the most dominant civilizations of its
time. The Maya were quite advanced, demonstrating remarkable engineering skills and employing complex mathematics. The civilization appeared unable to sustain itself and experienced a
dramatic decline about 900 CE. Archeologists now believe that the Maya were victims of ongoing war coupled with climate change that resulted in extreme hunger, forcing a mass departure from
their largest cities. Destruction of the countryside, resulting in decreasing resources, may also have played a role.
The Khmer empire
On the other side of the world, the Khmer empire had spread across modern-day Cambodia. Angkor was one of the civilization’s largest cities, with an extensive system of roads and canals
and an estimated population of as many as one million people. The Khmer empire was at its height between 1000 and 1200 CE, and experts are unsure what caused the civilization to disappear,
leaving its cities at the mercy of the continuous jungle. Theories range from war to environmental disaster.
The Indus civilization
The Indus civilization, also known as the Harappan civilization, was one of the largest in
ancient history, extending over parts of India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and containing as many as five million people. At its height, the civilization boasted some of the world’s most impressive architecture, among other achievements. It disappeared approximately 3,000 years ago for reasons unknown. One theory suggests that it fell victim to climate change that resulted in drought and
starvation.
21 .Which civilization is described as one of the largest in ALL of ancient history
A .The Maya, due to its wide geographical spread
B .The Indus, for its scale across three modern countries
C .The Khmer, because of its one-million-strong city
D .The Inca, as Machu Picchu survived nearly complete
22 .For which civilization do experts directly say they cannot explain its disappearance
A .The Khmer, as no agreed cause has been found
B .The Indus, since all records were lost long ago
C .The Maya, because war destroyed all written evidence
D .The Inca, given Machu Picchu was found nearly intact
23 .What theme applies to ALL four civilizations described in the passage
A .They were recognized by international heritage organizations
B .They all collapsed primarily because of climate change
C .They demonstrated outstanding engineering achievements
D .They each rose to power and eventually disappeared

For Sarah, a librarian in a small town in Oregon, the library was never just a place for books. But it wasn’t until the record-breaking heatwave last summer that she realized its true potential as a “community living room.”
As temperatures climbed to dangerous levels, Sarah noticed an unusual influx of people. It
wasn’t just the regular readers; it was elderly couples whose homes lacked air conditioning,
exhausted delivery workers looking for a cool corner, and teenagers who usually spent their
afternoons at the now-closed local park. The library, with its powerful cooling system and free Wi-Fi, became a sanctuary.
One afternoon, Sarah spotted a man named David sitting near the back, staring blankly at a computer screen. After a brief conversation, she learned that David had recently lost his job and, without a home internet connection, was struggling to apply for new positions. Seeing his
frustration, Sarah didn’t just point him to a shelf. She spent her lunch breaks for the next week helping him polish his resume and navigating complex job portals.
“Libraries are the only places where you can exist without being expected to spend money,” Sarah observed. Inspired by the crisis, she started a “Career Corner” in the library, offering free
printing services and weekly workshops. The initiative was a huge success, attracting local business owners who volunteered to conduct mock interviews.
Months later, David walked in, not to escape the heat, but to share the news that he had
secured a technician job. He handed Sarah a small potted plant — a token of gratitude. For Sarah, the library had evolved. It was no longer just a quiet space for silence, but a dynamic hub where lives were rebuilt.
24 .What did Sarah find out about the library during the heatwave
A .It needed a more powerful cooling system. B .It could serve as a vital social center.
C .It attracted fewer readers than expected. D .It was too small for the growing influx.
25 .What does the underlined word “sanctuary” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A .A quiet research lab. B .A busy marketplace.
C .A historic monument. D .A safe shelter.
26 .What can we infer about the “Career Corner”
A .It was initially a government project. B .It focused mainly on young teenagers.
C .It replaced the library’s traditional roles. D .It benefited from community support.
27 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .Sarah: A Librarian with a Green Thumb.
B .David’s Journey: From Heat to a New Job.
C .The Library: More Than Just a Quiet Space.
D .Public Services: How to Survive a Heatwave.

Some famous novels show that being the side character can give us access to deeper truths and a richer appreciation of the human condition than those too busy propelling the story
forward.Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
“He possesses two out of the three qualities necessary for the ideal detective. He has the power of observation and that of deduction. He is only wanting in knowledge. ”
There is little doubt that Sherlock Holmes is the most famous detective in literature. Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories now exist in over 70 languages, and Holmes is the most portrayed literary character in film and television history.
As a detective, Holmes often takes the lead in solving mysteries, but the story is told from the perspective of Dr. John H. Watson, Holmes’s loyal friend and companion.
There are many advantages to this. First, Holmes is odd and tends to focus on minor details. Telling a short story from his perspective would make it anything but short. Dr. Watson translates Holmes’s oddity into something less tiring for the reader.
On a literary level, having the story told by the companion helps keep the reader in suspense. If we
had access to everything Holmes knew, the game would be over before it was happening. By seeing the Victorian world through Watson’s eyes, not only are we provided a picture that
non-detectives can comprehend, but we get to enjoy Sherlock’s exciting adventures spoiler-free.The Great Gatsby by E. Scot Fitzgerald
“Yet high over the city, our line of yellow windows must have contributed their share of human
secrecy to the casual watcher in the darkening streets, and I was him too, looking up and
wondering. I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life. ”
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s best-known work is a meditation on class in the supposedly egalitarian (平等主义) United States, the excesses of the 1920s, and how horrible it can be when the
American Dream comes true. The story is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a young man who has moved to Long Island in hopes of becoming a stockbroker and cashing in on the 1920s boom. As the title suggests, the real hero of the story is his mysterious neighbor, Jay
Gatsby.
The difficulty of the story centers on Gatsby’s attempts to pursue Nick’s married cousin
Daisy, his dreams of reliving the past, and his efforts to climb into the upper-class of American
society. Nick, who is an unreliable narrator, is present for many of the main events in the story.
However, as hinted at in the above quote, he considers himself an observer rather than a driver of those events.
This allows us to get an outside view of the situation from somebody who admits he doesn’t entirely fit into the world he’s participating in while still being an intimate companion of those
who do. The resulting commentary on the life of the American upper crust (症结) has been debated for a century.
28 .If written from the perspective of Sherlock Holmes instead of Dr. John Watson, the book Sherlock Holmes would be .
A .short and to the point B .incomprehensible and long
C .full of spoiler and suspense D .interesting but too professional
29 .What can be inferred from The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald
A .Nick Carraway is not just as observer but a driver of the story events.
B .The real mysterious hero behind the title of the novel is Nick Garraway.
C .Readers will know more about the American upper class from the perspective of Jay Gatsby.
D .The unreliable narrator prevents the reader from grasping the harms of pursuing the American
Dream.
30 .Quotes from Sherlock Holmes and The Great Gatsby given below the title respectively in order to .
A .stick to the traditional pattern of a famous novel
B .indicate the side character’s role as the narrator
C .remind readers of the theme and plot of the novels
D .explain the main character’s neglect of deep truths
31 .What’s the message the author of the passage wants to convey through the two books mentioned
A .Classical novels must have quotes that have enduring power among readers.
B .Stories told from the most important character’s perspective are still the mainstream.
C .Individual, or historical eras can be deeply explored from a unique sideline perspective.
D .Side characters in novels are usually dismissed as unimportant and can’t get their name in the title.

In the summer of 2022, on Greenland’s ice sheet, researchers toiled around the clock in the snowy tunnels, operating a massive drill to take out core samples, some of which hadn’t seen
daylight for 100,000 years.
The vast ice sheets that cover Greenland and Antarctica formed one snowflake (雪花) at a
time, as winter snow piled on top of each other and slowly turned into ice. Air pockets between
the snowflakes combined into bubbles (气泡) that went into the ice with a mix of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other trapped gases — a perfect record of the atmosphere. That’s what’s
unique about ice cores.
By analyzing gases trapped in ice, scientists track historical greenhouse gas changes —
linking them to causes like wildfires, forest growth, wetlands, or fossil fuels. Tracks of some
chemicals reveal past volcanic eruptions and solar activity. Combined with tree rings and seafloor substances, this data shows how greenhouse gases shaped rainfall, growing seasons, and ice sheet stability — enabling accurate climate models to forecast future change.
In layers from the past 3,000 years, scientist Steffensen and his colleagues have measured airborne lead pollution that settled over the Arctic as Romans and medieval
Europeans mined and smelted silver. Temporary drops in that pollution mark societal disorders like the decline of the Roman Empire after A. D.400, and the Black Death, which began
around1350. Moreover, these ice cores show that during the last ice age, which began 120,000 years ago, Earth’s climate swung violently between cold dry periods and warmer wetter ones. Modern humans existed throughout that time, but “Climate change forced them to move all the time. The last 11,000 years are the most stable”, says Steffensen. It was only during this period that human civilization flowered into cities, kingdoms, and countries.
“And now we are upsetting the apple cart,” Steffensen says. By seeking out these delicate records in the ice, scientists hope to reconstruct the past while they still can — allowing them to predict the future.
32 .What does the underlined word “toiled” in paragraph 1 mean
A .Waited patiently. B .Worked tirelessly.
C .Walked carefully. D .Explored playfully.
33 .Why do scientists study ice cores
A .To control future climate changes. B .To preserve volcanic eruption records.
C.To foresee the future by reading the past. D.To clarify the formation process of ice sheets.
34 .What can we infer about human civilization from paragraph 4
A .It began during the last ice age. B .It caused lead poisoning globally.
C .It collapsed after the Black Death. D .It developed rapidly during climate stability.
35 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .The Race to Save Secrets Trapped in Ice B .The Secrets of Ancient Civilizations
C .The Written Human History in Ancient Ice D .The Rapid Disappearance of Arctic Ice

This scientifically proven trick is a total game-changer for anyone who cooks. We all know the familiar sting; you start chopping an onion only to end up with tears streaming down your
face. Why does this happen 36
When you cut an onion, you break its cells, releasing sulfur (硫磺) compounds that form a gas. This gas mixes with the natural moisture in your eyes, creating a mild acid that causes
irritation (刺激) 37 This is a protective reaction, not an emotional cry.
The other major cause is tiny droplets. As a knife — especially a blunt (钝的) one — presses into the onion, it squeezes the inner liquid. When the skin breaks, this liquid forms droplets that splash upward, directly into your eyes.
38 A sharp knife slices cleanly, causing far less tissue pressure and droplet spray than a dull one. Using a blunt tool makes the tear problem much worse.
Furthermore, these flying droplets pose an additional health risk. ____39____ If present,
these germs can be spread around your kitchen by the same droplets that make you cry, increasing infection risk. Therefore, a sharp knife is a tool for both comfort and safety.
What is the best solution Simply sharpen your knives. The study tested common tips like washing onions in cold water or cooling them in the fridge, and found they did not work.
40 But for a simpler, science-backed method to minimize tears and mess, a sharp blade is your most effective choice.
A .Onions can sometimes carry bacteria.
B .Not everyone needs protection while slicing onions.
C .This finding highlights the importance of your knife.
D .In response, your eyes produce tears to wash the irritant away.
E .For complete protection, safety glasses create a reliable barrier.
F .Researchers now have uncovered both a chemical and a physical reason.
G .This uncomfortable situation kicks your eyes into full-on protection mode.

On a beautiful Thursday this April, Mr and Mrs Brown took their daughter Lily out for a
walk in the neighborhood. On their way back, Mrs Brown picked up a doll for Lily from the local toy store — it had smooth hair and wore a pretty blue dress, just like the dolls Lily always admired in shop windows. These days, when Mr and Mrs Brown were busy with their work and spending
less time at home, such small joys meant more than ever.
In the afternoon, Lily couldn’t wait to play with her new doll in the backyard. She was
carefully pushing the doll in her little toy pram (推车) when suddenly, a strong wind came and
blew the pram down. Before Lily could catch it, the pram hit a tree and fell over. The doll fell out and broke into pieces on the hard ground. Since the doll was made of porcelain (瓷器) and
completely broken, the Browns could do nothing about it. Heartbroken, Lily collected all the
pieces carefully. She found a small cardboard box and put all the broken pieces inside, then buried it under the big oak tree in their garden.
About one hour later, their neighbor Mrs White happened to pass by and saw what had
happened. She came over to comfort little Lily. Seeing how sad the girl was, she really felt sorry for her. And it was at that moment that she decided to do something special for the poor child.
The next day, Mr Brown went out to get the mail as usual and found a package. It was
addressed to Lily, with no sender’s name written on it. Feeling curious, he brought it inside and called his daughter. Lily carefully opened the wrapped package.

根据 The Khmer empire 部分“The Khmer empire was at its height between
1000 and 1200 CE, and experts are unsure what caused the civilization to disappear, leaving its
cities at the mercy of the continuous jungle. Theories range from war to environmental disaster.
故选 A。
根据 Machu Picchu 部分“One of the few major pre-Columbian ruins found nearly complete, Machu Picchu was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. (马丘比丘
是为数不多的几乎完整留存的前哥伦布时期大型遗址之一,于 1983 年被联合国教科文组织列为世界遗产)” 、The Maya 部分“The civilization appeared unable to sustain itself and
experienced a dramatic decline about 900 CE. (该文明在公元 900 年左右无法维系自身,经历了急剧的衰落)” 、The Khmer empire 部分“experts are unsure what caused the civilization to
disappeared approximately 3,000 years ago for reasons unknown.

根据第一段“But it wasn’t until the record-breaking heatwave last summer that she realized its true potential as a “community living room.”(但是直到去年夏天破纪录的热浪来袭,她才意识到图书馆作为“社区客厅” 的真正潜力。)”
It wasn’t just the regular readers; it was elderly couples whose
homes lacked air conditioning, exhausted delivery workers looking for a cool corner, and
teenagers who usually spent their afternoons at the now-closed local park. The library, with its
根据第四段“Inspired by the crisis, she started a “Career Corner” in the library, offering free printing services and weekly workshops. The initiative was a huge success, attracting local business owners who volunteered to conduct mock interviews.(受这场危机的启发,她在图书馆设立了一个“职业角” ,提供免费打印服务和每周一次的专题讲座。这一举措大获成功,还吸引了当地企业主自愿前来组织模拟面试。)”可知,职业角得到了社区的支持。故选 D 项。
27 .主旨大意题。通读全文特别是最后一段“Months later, David walked in, not to escape the heat, but to share the news that he had secured a technician job. He handed Sarah a small potted
plant — a token of gratitude. For Sarah, the library had evolved. It was no longer just a quiet space for silence, but a dynamic hub where lives were rebuilt.(几个月后,大卫走了进来,不再是为了避暑,而是来分享喜讯:他找到了一份技术员的工作。 The Library: More Than Just a Quiet Space(图书馆:不只是安静的读书的地方)符合语境。

根据 Sherlock Holmes 部分第五段中的“First, Holmes is odd and tends to focus on minor details. Telling a short story from his perspective would make it anything but short. Dr. Watson translates Holmes’s oddity into something less tiring for the reader.(首先,福尔摩斯性格古怪,倾向于关注细节。从他的视角讲述一个短篇故事只会让故事变得冗长。华生医生将福尔摩斯的古怪之处转化为让读者不那么疲惫的内容)”及第六段“If we had access to everything Holmes knew, the game would be over before it was happening.(如果我们能知道福尔摩斯所知的一切,故事的悬念将荡然无存)”可知,若以福尔摩斯为叙事视角,故事可能因细节堆砌而冗长,且缺乏悬念(充满剧透)。故选 B 项。
29 .推理判断题。根据 The Great Gatsby 部分倒数第二段中的“ Nick, who is an unreliable
narrator, is present for many of the main events in the story. However, as hinted at in the above
quote, he considers himself an observer rather than a driver of those events.(尼克是一个不可靠的
结合尾段中的“This allows us to get an outside view of the situation from somebody who admits he doesn’t entirely fit into the world he’s participating in while still being an intimate
companion of those who do.(这使我们能够从一个人那里获得对局势的外部视角 —— 这个人承认自己并不完全融入他所参与的世界,但同时仍是那些真正融入其中的人的亲密伙伴)由此推测,他不仅仅是观察者,同时也是故事事件的驱动者。故选 A 项。
根据 Sherlock Holmes 部分的第三段中的“As a detective, Holmes often takes the lead in solving mysteries, but the story is told from the perspective of Dr. John H. Watson,
The Great Gatsby by E. Scot Fitzgerald 部分中的第二段中的“The story is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a young man who has moved to Long Island in hopes of becoming a
stockbroker and cashing in on the 1920s boom.(这个故事是从尼克 卡拉威的视角来讲述的。
Some famous novels show that being the side character can give us access to deeper truths and a richer appreciation of the human condition than those too busy

In the summer of 2022, on Greenland’s ice sheet, researchers toiled around the clock in the snowy tunnels, operating a massive drill to take out core samples, some of
which hadn’t seen daylight for 100,000 years.(2022 年夏天,在格陵兰岛的冰原上,研究人员在积雪覆盖的隧道中夜以继日地 toiled 工作,操作着一台巨大的钻机来采集岩芯样本,其中一些样本已经沉睡了 10 万年仍未见天日。)”
根据最后一段“By seeking out these delicate records in the ice, scientists hope to reconstruct the past while they still can — allowing them to predict the future.(通过在冰层中寻找这些珍贵的记录,科学家希望在还来得及的时候还原过去,从而预测未来。)”
根据第四段“The last 11,000 years are the most stable”, says Steffensen. It was only during this period that human civilization flowered into cities, kingdoms, and countries.(斯特菲森内表示:“过去 11000 年是最为稳定的时期。”
故选 A。

37 .上文“This gas mixes with the natural moisture in your eyes, creating a mild acid that causes irritation (刺激). (这种气体与你眼睛中的天然水分混合,产生一种引起刺激的弱酸。)”解释了切洋葱时释放的气体与眼睛中的自然水分混合产生刺激弱酸这一情况,空后“This is a
protective reaction, not an emotional cry. D“In response, your eyes produce tears to wash the
irritant away.
38.下文“A sharp knife slices cleanly, causing far less tissue pressure and droplet spray than a dull one. Using a blunt tool makes the tear problem much worse. (锋利的刀切起来干净利落,与钝刀相比,产生的组织压力和飞溅的水滴要少得多。使用钝的工具会使流泪问题变得更糟。)”强调了使用锋利的刀切洋葱能减少组织压力和飞溅水滴,而钝工具会使流泪问题更严重。选项C“This finding highlights the importance of your knife. (这一发现强调了你的刀的重要性。)”符合语境,对后文关于刀对切洋葱时流泪情况的影响进行了概括性说明,引出下文具体阐述刀的重要性相关内容。故选 C。
39 .下文“If present, these germs can be spread around your kitchen by the same droplets that
make you cry, increasing infection risk. A“Onions can sometimes carry bacteria.
故选 A。
40 .上文“The study tested common tips like washing onions in cold water or cooling them in the fridge, and found they did not work. (研究测试了常见的建议,如用冷水洗洋葱或把它们放在冰箱里冷却,但发现这些方法都不起作用。)”提到研究测试了常见建议但效果不佳,空后“But for a simpler, science-backed method to minimize tears and mess, a sharp blade is your most
effective choice. E“For complete protection, safety glasses create a reliable barrier.

67 .范文
Lily’s eyes immediately lit up with excitement and joy. Inside lay a brand-new doll—not just any doll, but one even more beautiful than the broken one. Beside the doll was a small handwritten note that said: “Every beautiful doll deserves to be loved by a sweet girl like you.
Always keep smiling! — From your secret friend.” Mr Brown immediately thought of their kind neighbor Mrs White, who had witnessed Lily’s sadness yesterday. A warm feeling of gratitude filled his heart as he watched his daughter happily hug her new doll.
Deeply moved by this wonderful act, Mr Brown decided to share the story online. The story quickly spread throughout the community. Many neighbors, inspired by this simple but
meaningful gesture, started helping with grocery shopping for elderly neighbors, while others
shared plants from their gardens. When Mrs White’s family learned what she had done, they felt incredibly proud of her. But the most valuable reward for Mrs White was seeing Lily playing happily in the garden every day, always carrying the new doll with her. This experience served as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can create waves of warmth and bring people closer together.
