First aid is the immediate care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly ill. It includes
self-help and home care if medical assistance is not available or delayed. First aid knowledge and
skills can make the difference between life and death in emergency situations. Here are some
common first aid procedures.
For burns: Immediately cool the burn under cool running water for at least 10 minutes. Remove
any jewelry or tight clothing from the affected area before it swells. Cover the burn with a sterile
dressing or clean cloth. Do not apply ice directly to the burn, as it may cause further damage. Do
not break blisters, as this increases the risk of infection.
For choking: If a person cannot speak, cough, or breathe, perform the Heimlich manoeuvre.
Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist, make a fist with one hand and
place it just above the navel. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press hard into the
abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Repeat until the object is forced out.
For nosebleeds: Sit upright and lean forward slightly. Pinch the soft part of the nose just below
the bridge for 10 to 15 minutes. Lean forward to prevent blood from flowing down the throat,
which can cause nausea. Apply a cold compress to the bridge of the nose to help constrict blood
vessels.
For poisoning: Call emergency services immediately. Try to find out what was swallowed, how
much, and when it happened. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by medical professionals.
21. What should you do first when someone gets a burn
A. Cover it with a dressing. B. Remove tight clothing.
C. Cool it under running water. D. Apply ice to the area.
22. Why should a person with a nosebleed lean forward
A. To stop the bleeding faster.
B. To avoid swallowing blood.
C. To keep the nose in a higher position.
D. To make it easier to apply a cold compress.
23. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To advertise first aid courses.
B. To provide basic first aid guidance.
C. To compare different first aid methods.
D. To argue for the importance of first aid training.

When Li Hua first arrived in Canada for her exchange program, she was nervous about trying
local food. As a Chinese student who grew up on rice and stir-fried dishes, she worried that
Western food would be too strange. But her host family quickly put her at ease.
On her first night, Mrs. Smith made a traditional Canadian dinner: roast beef with mashed
potatoes and gravy, accompanied by fresh green beans. “I thought I might not like it,” Li Hua
recalls, “but it was actually delicious. The beef was tender and flavorful.” She learned that
Canadian cuisine, like Chinese cuisine, emphasizes the quality of ingredients and the importance
of sharing meals with family.
The following week, Li Hua decided to return the favor. She offered to cook a Chinese meal for
the Smiths. She made mapo tofu and stir-fried vegetables. “I wasn’t sure if they would like the
spicy flavors,” she says. To her delight, Mr. Smith asked for seconds, and even young Tommy,
who usually refuses to eat vegetables, cleaned his plate.
“Food is a universal language,” Li Hua says now. “When you share a meal with someone, you
share a part of your culture. I’ve learned that trying new foods isn’t scary—it’s an adventure.” Her
host family agrees. “We’ve learned so much about Chinese culture through food,” Mrs.
Smith says. “Now we even have a weekly ‘international night’ where we cook dishes from
different countries. It’s brought us closer together.” 24. How did Li Hua feel before trying
Canadian food
A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Indifferent. D. Confident.
25. What did Li Hua learn about Canadian cuisine
A. It focuses on spicy flavors.
B. It values ingredient quality and family sharing.
C. It is mostly fast food.
D. It has no similarities to Chinese cuisine.
26. How did the Smith family react to Li Hua’s cooking
A. Only Mrs. Smith enjoyed it.
B. Tommy refused to eat it.
C. All family members liked it.
D. They thought it was too spicy.
27. What is the main message of the passage
A. Canadian food is better than Chinese food.
B. Cooking is too difficult for exchange students.
C. Sharing food helps people understand different cultures.
D. Exchange programs are only about studying.

One of the most breathtaking train journeys in the world is across Canada, from the Atlantic
coast to the Pacific. This vast land offers landscapes that change from dense forests to open
prairies, from the rugged Rocky Mountains to the gentle coastline. For those who love nature
and adventure, this journey is unforgettable.
The trip typically begins in Toronto, a multicultural city known for its iconic CN Tower. As the
train moves westward, passengers pass through the province of Ontario, with its countless lakes
and forests. Many travelers are astonished by the sheer scale of the wilderness. “I’ve never seen
so many trees in my life,” one passenger remarked.
Next comes the Prairie region, where the landscape opens up into endless fields of wheat and
canola. The flatness of the land, stretching to the horizon, offers a completely different kind of
beauty. During summer, the yellow canola flowers create a spectacular view that photographers
dream of capturing.
The highlight for most travelers is the Rocky Mountains. As the train climbs into the mountains,
passengers are treated to views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and rushing rivers. Wildlife
such as elk, bears, and eagles can often be spotted from the train windows. “Seeing those
mountains up close took my breath away,” said a traveler from Japan.
Finally, the train arrives in Vancouver, a city surrounded by ocean and mountains. After days of
watching the landscape pass by, travelers often feel a sense of accomplishment. They have
crossed an entire continent and witnessed the incredible diversity of Canada’s natural beauty.
28. What does the word “breathtaking” in paragraph 1 most likely mean
A. Dangerous. B. Extremely beautiful. C. Boring. D. Expensive.
29. What can travelers see in the Prairie region
A. Dense forests. B. Snow-capped peaks.
C. Endless fields of crops. D. Rushing rivers.
30. Why do travelers feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the journey
A. They have survived a dangerous trip.
B. They have traveled across the entire country.
C. They have taken many beautiful photos.
D. They have seen rare wildlife.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward this train journey
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Enthusiastic. D. Uninterested.

Scientists have long known that diet plays a crucial role in human health. But recent research
suggests that what we eat affects not only our physical well-being but also our mental health.
This emerging field, known as nutritional psychiatry, explores the connection between food and
mood.
The link between diet and mental health is not entirely new. For decades, researchers have
observed that people who consume a traditional Mediterranean diet—rich in vegetables, fruits,
nuts, whole grains, and fish—have lower rates of depression. However, only in recent years have
scientists begun to understand why.
One key factor is inflammation. Many processed foods, especially those high in sugar and
unhealthy fats, promote inflammation throughout the body. Chronic inflammation has been
linked to depression and other mood disorders. In contrast, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids
(found in fish like salmon) and antioxidants (found in berries and leafy greens) help reduce
inflammation.
Another factor is the gut microbiome—the trillions of bacteria that live in our digestive system.
These bacteria produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, which regulates mood. In fact, about
90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut, not the brain. What we eat directly affects
which bacteria thrive in our gut. A diet high in fiber and fermented foods promotes healthy gut
bacteria, while a diet high in processed foods can harm them.
Dr. Sarah Johnson, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, emphasizes that diet should not
replace conventional treatments for mental illness. “But for people looking to support their
mental health, improving diet is a practical step they can take,” she says. “You don’t need to
follow a perfect diet overnight. Start small—add one serving of vegetables to your daily meals, or
replace sugary snacks with nuts or fruit.”
32. What is the main focus of nutritional psychiatry
A. How diet affects physical health.
B. How food affects mental health.
C. How to lose weight through diet.
D. How to prevent chronic diseases.
33. According to the passage, what is one way that diet influences mood
A. Through the gut microbiome producing mood-regulating chemicals.
B. By directly changing brain structure.
C. By affecting how much sleep a person gets.
D. Through the taste of food.
34. What does Dr. Sarah Johnson suggest people do
A. Replace all processed foods immediately.
B. Use diet as the only treatment for depression.
C. Start with small, manageable dietary changes.
D. Avoid eating any fermented foods.
35. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as beneficial for mental health
A. Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
B. Foods high in sugar and unhealthy fats.
C. Vegetables and leafy greens.
D. Fermented foods.

It was a cold winter evening when 16-year-old Sarah was walking home from her part-time job at
a bookstore. The streets were icy, and a light snow was falling. As she turned onto her street, she
heard a strange sound—a weak cry coming from the bushes near the sidewalk.
Curious and concerned, Sarah approached carefully. To her surprise, she found an elderly
woman lying on the frozen ground. The woman, who appeared to be in her seventies, was
shivering violently. Her face was pale, and she seemed unable to move.
“Are you okay ” Sarah asked, kneeling beside her. The woman tried to speak, but her words
were unclear. Sarah noticed that the woman’s leg was twisted at an awkward angle, suggesting
she might have fallen and broken something.
Sarah’s heart pounded. She had taken a first aid course at school just a few months ago, but she
never thought she would need to use it in a real emergency. She took a deep breath and tried to
remember what she had learned.
First, she checked if the woman was conscious and breathing. The woman’s eyes were open, but
she looked weak and confused. Sarah gently wrapped her own scarf around the woman to keep
her warm. Then she called 911, speaking as clearly as she could about the location and the
woman’s condition.
While waiting for the ambulance, Sarah stayed with the woman, talking to her to keep her awake.
She learned that the woman’s name was Mrs. Thompson and that she had slipped on the ice
while walking to the corner store.
The ambulance arrived within ten minutes. The paramedics praised Sarah for her quick action
and for keeping Mrs. Thompson warm and calm. As they lifted Mrs. Thompson into the
ambulance, she reached out and grasped Sarah’s hand.
“Thank you,” Mrs. Thompson whispered. “You saved my life.”
A week later, Sarah received an unexpected letter.

第二节(读后续写):
Paragraph 1:
A week later, Sarah received an unexpected letter. It was from Mrs. Thompson, the elderly
woman she had helped. In the letter, Mrs. Thompson expressed her deepest gratitude,
explaining that she had broken her leg in the fall and that if Sarah hadn’t found her when she did,
she might have frozen to death on that cold night. She also invited Sarah to visit her at the
hospital. Sarah’s eyes filled with tears as she read the letter. She never imagined that a simple
act of kindness could mean so much to someone. That afternoon, she went to the hospital with
flowers and a card.
Paragraph 2:
From that day on, Sarah became determined to learn more about first aid. She signed up for an
advanced first aid course at the local Red Cross. She practiced CPR on mannequins, learned how
to treat different types of wounds, and studied how to handle medical emergencies. After
completing the course, she volunteered as a junior first aid instructor at her school, teaching
other students basic life-saving skills. “Everyone should know what to do in an emergency,” she
often said. “You never know when you might have the chance to save a life.” Her story inspired
many of her classmates to take first aid training as well.
