Growing up with stories
Telling stories in English is very important. We can gain knowledge, broaden our understanding and make people happy by telling stories. My favourite story is Snow White. I began to read it when I was seven years old. I love the story very much and I have read it many times. It is an interesting story. Snow White is a lovely girl. She is very kind to people. But her mum died. Her new mum is a bad woman. She thinks Snow White is more beautiful than her. So she wants to kill her. However, she was saved by seven short boys. Then they live happily together.
From this story, we can learn that kind people will be very lucky. The god may pray for them. So we should learn from Snow White. We should be a kind person and help each other.

 Dear Mike,
Learning that you’re interested in Chinese fables, I am writing to share with you a story about a farmer and a rabbit.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There was a farmer in ancient China. His crops grew best in the village because of his hard work. However, one day, while working, he saw a rabbit run into a tree trunk and die. The farmer got a rabbit without any effort. From that day on, instead of working hard, the farmer sat by the tree trunk every day, waiting for more rabbits to come. Days turned into weeks, but no more rabbits appeared. What’s worse, his crops were all dead. The moral of the fable is that we should never depend on luck. The harder we work, the luckier we get.

Sidney is a swan. He lives in East England. His best friend is Bob, a 39 year old builder. Bob found Sidney in May when he walked along the river. The baby swan had two large wounds(伤) on his neck.
Bob took the bird home and gave him food to eat. He named him Sidney and took care of him. In July, Bob took him to a wildlife centre. This way, Sidney could live in a more natural environment. But three months later, workers at the centre asked Bob to take the swan back. They found that Sidney was not happy at the centre and didn’t sleep much.

The bird Jingwei trying to fill the sea
Once upon a time, the youngest daughter of Emperor Yan, legendary(传说的) ruler of primitive(原始的) China, went boating on the Eastern Sea. While she was enjoying herself, a strong wind rose on the sea and her boat capsized(倾覆). Just before she was buried by the surging waves, her spirit turned into a beautiful bird. As it flew over the roaring(咆哮的) sea, it cried sadly in the sound “jingwei, jingwei”. That was why people called it “Jingwei”.
The bird lived on a mountain near the sea. It hated the sea so much that it decided to fill it up. Every day, it flew to and fro(来回地) between the mountain and the sea, carrying a small branch or a pebble(卵石) from the mountain and dropping it into the sea.
One day, the roaring sea said to Jingwei, “Poor little bird, stop doing that meaningless thing! You’ll never fill me up.” Jingwei replied, “I’ll fill you up no doubt! I will, even if it’ll take me thousands of years! I’ll fight on until doomsday(世界末日)! ”
The brave little bird kept carrying small branches and pebbles from the mountain to the Eastern Sea without taking a rest.
From this fable comes the idiom “The bird Jingwei trying to fill the sea”. We use it to describe people who are firm and indomitable(不屈不挠的) and will not stop until they reach their goal.

Robin joined the fishermen on the boat. He worked as hard as he could, but he did not know how to fish. He did not catch anything.
“You are useless,” the captain of the boat said. “We will not share anything with you.”
At that moment, one of the fishermen shouted, “Boat to the east! A pirate ship. We will all be killed!”
Robin said, “I am not a good fisherman, but I can use a bow. Lend me your bow and as many arrows as you have.”
The captain of the boat said, “If you fight as well as you fish, we will all die.”
  “Trust me,” Robin said.
The captain of the fishing boat gave Robin his bow and all the arrows on the ship.
The pirate ship came nearer and nearer. Robin took aim. He shot the first arrow. It killed the pirate captain. Robin shot arrow after arrow. Soon all the pirates were dead.
“There will be gold on the pirate ship,” the captain said. “You will half of it. Robin.”
“I don’t want the gold. Give half of it to the old man who owns this boat and build homes for the poor with the other half. Now take me back to the shore.”
Robin knew it was time to go home. His leg was hurting again. “I am very ill,” he said to the captain. “I want to be with my men.”
