VI. 阅读理解 (共40分)
A篇 (12分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
In 1928, Alexander Fleming, a Scottish scientist, was studying bacteria called staphylococcus. Before he left for a holiday, he forgot to clean his lab dishes. When he returned, he noticed something strange. One dish had a spot of mold (霉菌) on it, and the bacteria around the mold had been killed. This mold was Penicillium notatum.
This accidental discovery was the beginning of penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic (抗生素). Fleming found that this mold could stop the bacteria from growing. He wrote about his findings, but for over ten years, no one was very interested. It was too difficult to produce penicillin in large amounts.
During World War II, two other scientists, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, continued Fleming’s work. They figured out a low-heat method to freeze-dry the mold, turning it into a powerful powder. This was a breakthrough. They tested it on mice and then on a human patient. The patient’s serious infection improved dramatically, but there wasn’t enough medicine to cure him completely.
Finally, with help from labs in the US, they made it possible to produce penicillin on a large scale. It saved millions of soldiers’ lives from infected wounds. In 1945, Fleming, Florey, and Chain were awarded the Nobel Prize. Fleming’s “accidental” discovery, born from a messy lab, had truly changed the course of medicine.

D篇 (4分)
阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题。
Virtual reality (VR) is no longer just for games. A new study shows that VR can help people overcome their fears. For example, someone who is scared of heights (acrophobia) can wear a VR headset and find themselves standing on a virtual skyscraper. The experience feels very real, but it is completely safe.
In a recent experiment, 30 people with a fear of public speaking were divided into two groups. One group practiced giving speeches in a virtual classroom with a VR headset. The other group used traditional methods, like practicing in front of a mirror. After six weeks, the VR group showed a 30% greater reduction in anxiety than the mirror group.
Therapists believe VR is so effective because it allows people to face their fears in a controlled environment. You can start with an easy situation, like speaking to a small virtual group, and slowly make it harder, like speaking in a large virtual hall. This gradual exposure helps the brain learn that the feared situation is not actually dangerous.
