A 19-year-old runner with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) has become the youngest person with a learning disability to complete a marathon. Lloyd Martin created history by finishing the 26.2-mile (42 km) course of the London Marathon guided by his mother Ceri Hooper, 54, on Sunday.
After undergoing surgery on both of his knees in 2021, Martin began running 5 kilometers at a time. The Daily Mail reported that the teenager began training for the marathon in December, coached by his mother, an experienced marathoner. After Christmas, he began increasing his mileage and prepared for London.
More than 50,000 excellent and charitable runners took to the streets of the British capital, with a record 578,000 people entering the ballot (抽签) for this event, making it the most popular marathon in the world.
The Guinness World Records awarded Lloyd Martin a certificate at the end of the race. He is the youngest person to complete a marathon in the intellectual impairment (损伤) category, the book of records announced.
The teenager and his mother broke down in tears after finishing the race. “In Lloyd's words, it's achieving his dream.” Ms. Hooper was quoted by the BBC as saying. “Really anything is possible if you put your mind to it. With a bit of work, you can achieve it.
Martin ran the first 14 miles of the marathon without stopping, which was the farthest he had ever run, his mother said. He then walked the rest of the miles till the finish line as the crowd cheered for him.
“It was tough, but we had a ball,” Ms. Hooper said, adding that her son's achievement was important for people with Down syndrome. “We did not say a lot when we crossed the finish line. After opening up a package, most of us break down the cardboard box and bring it to the recycling box, but not Josh Gluckstein. This London-based artist uses the material to create incredible sculptures of wildlife, transforming the brown paper into animals like giraffes, lions, and gorillas. Most recently, he's pushed himself to complete his most ambitious project to date—an 8-foot tall cardboard coral reef (珊瑚礁) filled with over 50 different species of animals.
Gluckstein has been documenting the entire creative process on Instagram and TikTok. From colorful coral to animals like sea turtles, the sculpture offers a detailed view of life underwater. According to the artist, it “celebrates the wonder and rich biodiversity of our oceans while raising awareness for the challenges facing our ocean life.”
Created for Homo Faber, a month-long exhibition in Venice that celebrates modern artisans (手艺人), the sculpture was a creative challenge for Glickstein. In order to create the necessary textures for the reef, he turned to different types of cardboard.
His videos give an insight into how he processes the cardboard. We watch as he shapes individual pieces of coral, which come to life when painted and placed on the reef. Next are the animals. As each one is added to the reef, the sculpture takes on an impressive quality and becomes a 360-degree experience.
So rich in detail, it's difficult to choose a favorite part of the reef, but Gluckstein does have his personal selection. “The cardboard straw anemone (海葵),” he says. “I love the message about the threat of plastic waste in the ocean and the difference we can make by making more sustainable choices.”
Now, he hopes that his reef will remind people of the ocean's magical beauty and show the incredible creative possibilities of cardboard. To create his commitment to ocean conservation, Gluckstein is donating 10% of the profits from this special piece to the charity Oceana, which works to protect and restore the world's oceans.
28. Why did Gluckstein demonstrate his grand project online

B. To provide a detailed view of underwater life.
C. To make people aware of the threat to sea life.
D. To promote the month-long exhibition in Venice.
29. Why does Gluckstein like the cardboard straw anemone best
A. It belongs to the most challenging part.
B. It advocates environmental sustainability.

30. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The artist's future study of using cardboard.
B. The public's reaction to the cardboard statue.
C. Gluckstein's dedication to ocean conservation.

As advancements in AI continue to unfold, robots are emerging as a transformative force in the elderly care industry across China. With innovations ranging from feeding robots to those designed for recovery and hygiene (卫生) assistance, an increasing range of age-friendly tech products is being introduced to support seniors.
These cutting-edge solutions are making up for traditional family-based care models, announcing a new era in the way we approach elder care.
Recently, cities such as Shanghai and Xi'an, have launched innovative smart elderly care initiatives aimed at enhancing the combined development of elderly care services and related industries. This move came in response to the rising interest in smart elderly care.
Many nursing homes in Chinese cities are now integrating intelligent care robots into their operations. For example, at a home care center in Fuzhou, a group of seniors averaging 86 years old are enjoying a more convenient and dynamic lifestyle thanks to the introduction of “smart nannies.” Among the cutting-edge technologies being employed to assist seniors with disabilities are robotic “caregivers,” multifunctional transfer bed-chairs, and fall-detection alarms.
In 2024, a resident from Shenzhen, Guangdong, surnamed Xia, invested nearly 30,000 yuan in a toileting care robot for his 80-year-old bedridden grandfather, which can help him stand and walk for toileting. It can automatically sense needs and perform fully automated processes. Since its introduction, this toileting care robot has greatly eased the caregiving burden on family members. “It's much less exhausting now. When the drain water tank is full, we just empty the wastewater and refill it with clean water,” Xia said.
He expressed hope for more walking-assist robots, noting that the high cost of current models remains a barrier for many families.
Chen Zhengxiang, an AI model trainer based in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu Province, has conducted research in many nursing homes across the country. He told the Global Times that current robots on the market still have shortcomings in human-robot interaction. For instance, they struggle to recognize commands spoken in local dialects, and their emotional interactions remain at a programmed response level.
32. What is mainly talked about in the first paragraph
A. Robots are transforming Chinese industry.
B. Tech products help the elderly live longer.
C. Elderly care robots see growing popularity.
D. AI speeds up the production of care robots.
33. What can robots at a home care center in Fuzhou do
A. Help doctors operate on the sick elderly.
B. Pick seniors up who fall to the ground.
C. Make nursing homes easily accessible.
D. Move seniors in a more convenient way.
34. What does the underlined word “bedridden” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Having limited mobility.
B. Abandoned to diseases.
C. Lack of consciousness.
D. Unable to express oneself.
35. What does the author want to stress about elderly care robots in the last paragraph
A. Extensive market prospects.
B. The room for improvement.
C. The difficulty in training them.
D. Potential application in nursing.

We're all taught from a young age to say sorry when we make mistakes and to say thank you when someone does something kind. Yet over the years, “I'm sorry” seems to have multiplied, while “thank you” has almost disappeared. We apologise for many silly things. Someone knocks into us—we say sorry. We miss a phone call—we say sorry. This constant apologising has gotten out of control. __36__
Of course, we should still apologise when we truly make a mistake or when we hurt someone. __37__ But many apologies are not necessary. They happen automatically, almost without thought. We do it to avoid conflict. We do it because we've been taught that politeness matters above all else. We assume that saying sorry will make people feel good.
__38__ Sometimes unnecessary apologies make everything awkward. They distract us from the real issue and even weaken our relationships. If we are always saying sorry, will our true apologies still sound sincere Probably not. And when we apologise for things that aren't our fault, we only make ourselves feel worse.
Yet something changes when we start saying thank you instead and confidence grows. We stop trying to please everyone. __39__ It helps us value what we have and judge ourselves less harshly. It reminds us that there is still good in the world—and in ourselves. And soon, the people around us will notice a change in our attitude.
Replacing sorry with thank you is a small change with a big impact. __40__ It improves how we feel and how others respond to us. And if everyone took a moment to sincerely express gratitude each day, the world might quickly become a kinder place.
A. It needs to stop.
B. Gratitude also shifts our perspective.
C. However, we ignore our own feelings.
D. However, it doesn't always work that way.
E. This has always been true and will never change.
F. A simple word shapes our mindset and relationships.
G. We stop trying to put ourselves in others' shoes directly.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the month of August. All the students were studying hard for their monthly tests and Yasmin was one of them. She was a nine-year-old, intelligent girl, who always scored high marks in tests and exams. But she was a little weak in history, and because of that, she often got the second position in exams.
Finally, the tests started. Each day, Yasmin sat next to Misbah, her best friend, and nervously filled the answer sheets. The last test was history, so the weekend before it, Yasmin reviewed all the major contents but was not confident about her preparation. “I still feel as if I am not ready for the history test tomorrow. I am very weak in it,” she told Ali, her elder brother.
“Oh, come on! You always say that and you still pass!” Ali said.
The next day, during the assembly (集会), Yasmin learned that their history teacher, Miss Khadija, was absent, so another teacher, Miss Aisha, was assigned to their class. The whole class complained when they heard that Miss Aisha would be invigilating (监考), as she was infamous for being very strict and never giving even a minute of extra time.
Yasmin attempted all the questions, except one multiple-choice question. She looked at the clock and realized that only five minutes were left before the teacher would collect the answer sheets. Suddenly, her friend Misbah passed her a note with an answer on it. Yasmin smiled and wrote the answer. But then she remembered that Miss Khadija had once told them, “Be honest rather than clever.” Yasmin took a deep breath and made her choice. She erased the borrowed answer and wrote down the answer she had originally thought of, regardless of whether it was right or wrong.
Misbah's eyes widened in disbelief when she noticed this. She opened her mouth to say something, but at that moment, the bell rang and Miss Aisha's sharp voice cut through the silence: “Pencils down! Pass your papers forward!”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After school, Misbah approached Yasmin:
Back home, Yasmin told her mother everything about the exam.

A Meaningful Social Labor Practice
Last weekend, our school organized a social labor practice activity for us students.
We divided into groups to finish different tasks. Some cleaned the community, picking up rubbish and tidying public areas; others helped the elderly living alone do housework and chatted with them to cheer them up. Besides, we put up posters to promote labor spirit in the community.
This activity not only made the community cleaner and warmer but also let me realize the value of labor. I learned to take responsibility and gained precious experience that I will never forget.
读后续写
After school, Misbah approached Yasmin. “Why did you erase it ” she said angrily, frustration tightening her voice. Yasmin shook her head. “Miss Khadija said honesty matters more than marks,” she whispered, her eyes meeting Misbah's angry gaze. “Even if I fail, I needed it to be my answer.” Misbah murmured about wasted chances before storming off, leaving Yasmin alone in the classroom. Finally, Yasmin seemed to have made up her mind, getting out of the classroom.
Back home, Yasmin told her mother everything about the exam. “Yasmin, you did the right thing. Marks can be regained, but once integrity is lost, it is hard to restore,” her mother said. In a couple of days, their history teacher Miss Khadija returned with the results. Yasmin looked at her paper and was surprised to see that she had topped the history test! The result made her feel that her commitment to honesty had truly paid off. After class, Misbah slipped her a note that read, “I was wrong — about everything.”
