请阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。
It was a happy time for me, but there were many dangers because of my small size. There are some incidents (事件) that I remembered clearly.
Every morning Glumdalclitch carried my box to the window. One day she carried me to the window as usual, and then she left me there. Some huge wasps came in through the window, and entered the box. They were the size of birds in England, and they were very fierce (凶猛的). I was afraid of them. I took out my sword and fought them. I killed four of them. Luckily, the others flew away.
Another dangerous moment that I remembered was this: Glumdalclitch left me in the garden one day, and the weather was very bad. First it rained, and then it hailed (下冰雹) very hard. The hailstones were the size of tennis balls, and they hurt me badly. I tried to hide under a tree, but I was still hit by some of them.
Another danger came from an idea that the Queen had. She knew that I liked boats, and she ordered one of her servants to make a little boat for me. The servant put the boat into a tank of water on the table. I spent many hours in this boat. One day, however, a frog jumped out of the water into the boat. I thought the boat would sink, and I was afraid. I was lucky, and I managed to push the frog out of the boat.

In this school, the teacher had set a rule to encourage children to recite the Bible: if he could recite two verses, the teacher would give him one blue ticket; ten blue tickets were equal to one red ticket; ten red tickets could be exchanged for a yellow ticket; if anyone could get ten yellow tickets, the teacher would give him or her a new Bible. Getting the thick book was the greatest honor for children. So they were busy reciting every day. To Tom, it’s impossible, so he thought of a simple way. He exchanged his small things in other children’s hands. In this way, he got many tickets.
At the beginning of the class, the 35-year-old teacher made a daily speech. Tom was playing with the boys around him. He pulled a boy’s hair and pinned another, but when they turned around, he just read the book carefully, but the children began to talk noisily. Some children even began to fight.
Suddenly, the room turned silent because some visitors came into the room. Three adults and one young girl entered. To Tom’s surprise, the little girl was just the “angel”. Tom thought of his meeting with the girl and the adventure in her garden. Among the visitors, the old man was somebody.
Then it was the time to give prize to those children who had got ten yellow tickets. The room was quiet. Nobody had enough tickets. When hope was dead, Tom stood up with nine yellow tickets, nine red ones and ten blue ones. Then, children suddenly realized that they were cheated by Tom. The beautiful handiwork of leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉绣) in Tongren, Guizhou province, has made Guizhou embroidery famous in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery dates back to the Song Dynasty. It has been used to send information by several ethnic groups (民族) in the southwestern region.
Yang Li, an inheritor (传承人) of this skill, has brought together the traditional embroidery of the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in the leaves. She also mixed traditional beauty with modern skill.
Leaf-vein embroidery artwork is highly valued because it is difficult to make. The key steps cover picking and drying the leaves, then designing (设计) and embroidering the pattern (图案). Leaves from plants in the thick forests of the Fanjing Mountain area in Tongren provide the best material. After the leaves naturally soften in about 20 days, they are fumigated (熏蒸). Then patterns, with ideas from ancient stories and nature, are drawn on the veins.
However, because leaf-vein embroidery needs long and hard work, it is not very easy to keep this traditional skill alive.
“During my lifetime, I feel I have a duty (职责). I should do it better and pass on this skill.” Yang said. In 2022, Yang set up a training centre and has since shared leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her student Yang Xinyu.
“Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure. As a young person influenced (影响) by my teacher Yang Li, I have kept on learning this skill and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to carry on this skill.” Yang Xinyu said.
1.When did leaf-vein embroidery start

Passage 2
(24-25八年级下·江苏常州市溧阳市·期中)
In recent times, stand-up comedy (脱口秀) has become popular in China. I’m a big fan of it. For me, watching stand-up comedy offers a way to relax.
One of my favourite comedians has explained the different ways in which Western and Asian people express love and care for others. It got me thinking about how people express love.
I was born into a typical (典型的) East Asian family. Although my family has always provided well for me, I seldom expressed my love or thankfulness to my parents. My parents never said anything like “You are the best boy” to me even when I made great improvements in my schoolwork.
The question of how love is communicated has often crossed my mind. Recently, thanks to the comedian’s ideas, I’ve come to realize that in Chinese culture food plays an important part in expressing love. The most common way for us to show love is through preparing delicious meals for loved ones.
As far as I can remember, my parents always try to prepare delicious meals for me. Whenever I return home, warm dishes are waiting for me. The meal warms not only my stomach but also my heart.
Our culture may not stress verbal (口头的) expressions of love, but love is expressed in a warm way.
1.Why does the writer enjoy watching stand-up comedy
2.What plays an important part in expressing love in Chinese culture
3.What does the writer think of the warm dishes
4.How do you usually express your love to your parents

After facing great challenges, 30-year-old Spanish motorcycle racer (摩托车手) Marc Marquez has made a successful comeback. On March 16, the six-time world champion (冠军) won his second race of the 2025 MotoGP season at the Argentina Grand Prix.
Born in Cervera, Spain, in 1995, Marquez asked his parents for a bike before he turned 4 years old. In 2013, he started his MotoGP journey and won a world championship in his first season. Between 2014 and 2019, he was at the top of the sport, winning five out of six championships.
At 1.68 meters tall, Marquez got the nickname (绰号) “the Ant of Cervera”. He also pioneered the “elbow down” riding style, where riders keep their elbows close to the ground to go faster.
Just as Marquez was about to reach bigger goals, a serious accident in the 2020 MotoGP season broke his right arm. Since then, he’s been working hard to get better from a number of crashes (撞车) and injuries (受伤). During his recovery (恢复), Marquez’s team had to take the wheels off his bike and hide them so he wouldn’t try to ride. He’s not afraid of the crashes that nearly ended his career. “Maybe sometimes I’m taking too much risk but I cannot ride a bike worrying about the crashing,” Marquez told The Guardian.

In a little fishing village in Southern Thailand, there are some boys who like to play football. They play with a lot of excitement and interest, running, shouting, jumping and kicking. These boys are really good at controlling the ball because their football field is a raft (木筏) in the middle of the sea. They live on Koh Panyee Island, where all the houses are built on tall wooden sticks. The village has 300 families, but even though it is small, the football team from the village has been very successful. Henry was always interested in books and ideas. He seldom cared about other people. They only made fun of him. They were also green-eyed because he was so smart, or so he thought. It seemed that Henry knew everything—except one thing. He didn’t know how to get on with other people.
He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with private (私人的) teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest student to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors (教授) to see if it was possible.
One day, the doorbell rang. When Henry opened the door, there was his hero—a famous professor who he liked very much—Ralph Brown. Henry was so excited that he couldn’t say a word. The two talked for a long time and they also exchanged ideas. The professor was surprised at what this young boy knew.
“Henry, tell me about your friends. What do you do for fun ” the professor wanted to know.
There was silence as Henry realized that he didn’t really have any friends. “Well, I don’t have time for all that. I’m too busy with my studies,” he said.
“Henry... There’s more to life than study. You should ▲.”
The professor talked a little more and then said, “I have to go, but I have a test for you. In this box, there are three things. I want you to learn how to use them. It is not very easy and you’ll need another person to help you. Try and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.”
