When we travel to other countries, it is very important to know about the local manners. Different countries have different ways to be polite.
In Japan, people usually bow to each other when they meet. The bow is not just a quick nod. The more respect you want to show, the deeper you should bow. When you give a gift to a Japanese friend, you should use both hands. It is also polite to take off your shoes before you go into a Japanese family's house.
In Germany, people are very serious about being on time. If you have a meeting with someone at 3 o'clock, you must arrive exactly at 3 o'clock. Being even 5 minutes late is very impolite. When you eat in a restaurant, it is polite to finish all the food on your plate. This shows that you enjoy the meal very much.
In Brazil, people are very friendly. They often greet each other with a big hug, even for people they just meet. When you talk with a Brazilian, you should stand close to them. It is not polite to keep a long distance between you and them.
All in all, learning about different manners can help us have a nice trip in other countries. Just remember the old saying: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon. 12-year-old Jessica went to the city library with her best friend Lucy. They wanted to borrow some books for their weekend reading.
When they got to the library, there were many people there. Some were reading books quietly at the desks, some were looking for books on the shelves, and some were waiting in line to borrow books.
Jessica and Lucy first went to the storybook area. Jessica saw a very interesting storybook on the high shelf. She was not tall enough to reach it. She wanted to jump to get the book, but she remembered the library rules: no running, no jumping, and keep quiet.
Just at that time, a librarian walked by. Jessica went up to her quietly and said politely, "Excuse me, madam. Could you please help me get that book on the high shelf " The librarian smiled and said, "Of course, little girl. Here you are." Jessica said happily, "Thank you so much!"
Then they found a quiet desk to read the books. Lucy took out a snack from her bag and wanted to eat it. Jessica stopped her at once and said in a low voice, "Don't eat here. It's against the library rules. We should keep the library clean, and eating may disturb other readers." Lucy said sorry at once and put the snack back into her bag.
When they finished reading, they waited in line patiently to borrow the books they chose. They didn't jump the line, even though there were many people in front of them.

When the little prince arrived on the Earth, he was very lonely. He walked across the desert for a long time, and then he met a snake.
"Good morning," said the little prince politely.
"Good morning," said the snake.
"Where am I " asked the little prince.
"On the Earth, in Africa," the snake answered.
"Oh. Are there no people on the Earth " said the little prince.
"This is the desert. There are no people in the desert. The Earth is very big," said the snake.
Then the little prince sat down on a stone and looked up at the sky.
"I wonder," he said, "whether the stars are lit up so that each one of us can find his own star one day."
Just at that time, a fox came out from behind the tree.
"Good morning," said the fox politely.
"Good morning," the little prince turned around and said politely, even though he saw nothing but a fox.
"Who are you " said the little prince. "You are very pretty."
"I am a fox," said the fox.
"Come and play with me," said the little prince. "I am so lonely."
"I cannot play with you," the fox said. "I am not tamed."
"What does 'tamed' mean " asked the little prince.
"It is something that people have forgotten," said the fox. "It means 'to make a connection'."
The little prince listened carefully. The fox talked slowly and politely, and the little prince felt very comfortable. He learned that to make a friend, you need to be polite, patient and kind. You need to respect the other person, and then you can build a real friendship.
