Last Sunday, Mark’s grandma invited him to her pottery studio (陶艺工作室). He was excited, because Grandma never invited her other grandsons to her studio.
As soon as Mark stepped into the studio, he began to look forward to putting his hands into some wet clay (黏土) and placing his bowl into the hot kiln (窑). “Be careful with that,” Grandma said as Mark picked up one of her bowls. The boy carefully put the bowl back on the table. Then Grandma showed him some of her bowls and asked him to make one himself. Mark started happily.
However, five hours later, Mark was sad. His first bowl, a blue one, looked more like a rock. His second bowl, a red one, was hardly any better. “I’ll never make it,” Mark said angrily, looking at his works.
Hearing this, Grandma stopped what she was doing and went to Mark. After seeing what he had made, she said, “Don’t worry. You just need to be more patient.” She sat next to Mark and helped him with his work. About one and a half hours later, they finished making a beautiful yellow bowl together.

It is common knowledge that spiders use their webs to catch insects. However, some spiders have developed other uses for their webs. One such spider is the European water spider, which uses its web to breathe underwater.
The European water spider spends most of its life underwater. It mates (交配), cares for its young, and feeds on insects below the water’s surface. Since it needs to breathe, the spider carefully keeps the air inside its web. This is what allows it to stay underwater for a long time.
The web is shaped like a balloon with a hole in the bottom. This “balloon” keeps the air inside and allows the spider to get in and out through the bottom to catch nearby insects. In fact, the water spider’s web works much the same as a diving bell (潜水铃), an early kind of submarine (潜艇). Diving bells are large bells supplied with air from a hose (软管) running to the water’s surface. The air keeps the water from filling up the bell, and people can go in and out through the open bottom. Because of this similarity (相似性), water spiders are sometimes known as “diving bell spiders”.
Although the web allows water spiders to stay underwater for a long time, some trips to the surface are necessary. When the web needs more fresh air, the spider pushes the web and lets the old air go out. Then, it swims to the surface to collect small fresh air bubbles (气泡) and keeps them in the hair on its stomach and legs. Finally, it goes back down to refill the web.

Chinese cuisine(菜肴) is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. But there is one kind of Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored (忽视) by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of tonic food (滋补食物).
It is believed that tonic food can improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For example, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame (芝麻) oil hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. People believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation (血液循环), and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach (菠菜), are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes (小萝卜), are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared, what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of using tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines (草药), such as the wolfberry (枸杞子), can be found on many restaurants’ menus. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office workers in need of a cheer.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large bowl of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with some fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you are looking for.
What is the present situation of tonic food
A. It is catching less attention.
B. It is enjoyed by many young people.
C. It is well-known worldwide.
D. It is becoming increasingly popular.
What was believed to benefit new mothers
A. Chinese cabbage.
B. Goat meat.
C. Sesame oil hot pot.
D. Fish soup.
Which of the following best explains the underlined word “catering” in Paragraph 3
A. Medicine.
B. Restaurant.
C. Education.
D. Fashion.
What is the writer’s purpose of writing this text
A.To present the charm(魅力)of Chinese cuisine.
B. To show the popularity of tonic food.
C. To introduce Chinese tonic food.
D. To tell the differences between “hot” food and “cold” food.

One of the most important lessons in life is to be true to yourself. It’s important to know who you are, what you believe in, and what makes you happy. 17._________
Many of us can’t help trying to change others to fit our own expectations. We may try to control their actions or try to encourage them to follow our way of thinking. 18._________ Actually, this only creates conflict (冲突) and can make us lose our friends, or it may even make others stay away from us.
Instead, we should try to accept others as they are and allow them to express themselves freely. This doesn’t mean we have to agree with everything they say or do, but we should respect their personal choices and listen to their opinions. As everyone has his or her own ideas about what they see or hear, it is wrong to think of something as black or white.
Likewise, we should also do our best to be true to ourselves and not let others get to us. 19. _______ Sometimes it can be easy to fall into the trap of trying to please everyone, but in doing so, we can lose sight of our own values and desires (渴望).
Be true to yourself. 20._________ Just as you cannot love anyone else until you love yourself, you cannot be true to anyone else until you are true to yourself.

How do you like your school Have you ever written to your head teacher to express your idea What would you like to suggest Here are some posts by students from different schools.
Li Ming, 14, Liaoning Province
I will give some suggestions about our school uniform. In our school, we students have to wear uniforms every day. But the grey and blue sports kit (服装) looks really dark and old. It can’t stand for the lively spirit. We can add some red or orange colours and make a new type of uniform.
Wang Ping, 14, Zhejiang Province
I have a suggestion for my head teacher. I think we should have more classes in science, such as model-plane-making class and computer-programming class. It is really boring to study basic subjects all the time.
Liu Hua, 15, Shanxi Province
I’d like to give my thanks to my head teacher. About one week ago, I felt a bit uncomfortable after playing basketball. Our head teacher came to me after he knew about it. He took care of me until my parents came. I really want to thank him for that.
He Xiaolei, 14, Shandong Province
I want to talk about the possibility of personalised (个性化的) classes. Now many middle schools are using the “personalised class” system. Students can choose lessons they want to take. I think it is more effective.
