One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. I was only interested in the word “Poems” that appeared in big, hot pink letters.
“Is it good ” I asked her.
“Yeah,” she answered. “There’s one I really like and you’ll like it, too.” I leaned forward.
“Patty Poem,” she read the title. *Who is Patty * I wondered. The poem began:
She never puts her toys away,
Just leaves them in a mess where they lay. ...
The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:
When she grows and gathers poise (稳重),
I’ll miss her harum-scarum (莽撞的) noise,
And look helplessly for scattered (散乱的) __________.
And I’ll be sad.
A terrible deep sadness washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.
“It’s you, honey,” My mother said sadly.
To my mother, the poem showed a parent’s love when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the “she” in the poem was horror. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible I burst out crying.
“What’s wrong ” my mother asked.
“Oh Mama,” I cried. “I don’t want to grow up ever!”
She smiled. “Honey, it’s okay. You’re not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I’ll still love you, okay ”
“Okay,” I was still weeping. My fear has gone. But I could not help thinking about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple I could clearly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now attracted by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.
I have since fallen in love with other poems, but “Patty Poem” remains my poem. After all, “Patty Poem” gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.

Many young Chinese people are crazy about guzi, and their spending on it is giving a big push to the country’s economy (经济).
Guzi sounds like “goods” in English. In Chinese, the word originally (最初) means “grain”, but here it refers to products related to ACGN, which stands for anime, comics, games, and novels. These products include cool badges, colorful cards, cute soft toys, and many other interesting things. When people buy these products, we say they are “eating grains”. It’s like a fun way to describe their shopping habits.
Most guzi lovers are young people. They buy guzi for different reasons. First, these things help them feel good. For example, a college student in Chongqing said, “Guzi helps me relax when I’m busy with schoolwork. It also makes me forget my study stress.” Second, many young people feel lonely these days. They want to make new friends. Guzi culture helps them a lot. In guzi stores, they can meet others who love the same anime, comics, games or novels. They can talk about their favorite characters, share stories, and become friends easily.
Guzi is not just popular among young people. It’s also bringing new life to Chinese businesses. In the past, many people liked shopping online, and some real stores had a hard time. But now, guzi draws young shoppers to physical stores. These stores are full of fun and colorful things, making shopping an exciting experience.
According to a report, the guzi economy is growing very fast. In 2023, it was worth a large amount of money. Then in 2024, it grew by 40% and reached 168.9 billion yuan! Experts think it will keep growing. By 2029, it may reach 308.9 billion yuan. Now, you can find guzi stores in almost every big shopping mall in major cities. Some stores are small but full of wonderful things. Others are very big, with different areas for different kinds of guzi. The rise of guzi culture shows that young people’s interests can not only bring them joy but also help the economy grow in a big way.
36.Does “eating guzi” mean eating real grains or buying goods here
37.According to the report, how much may the guzi economy reach by 2029
38.What makes guzi so popular with young people and Chinese businesses
39.Some people worry that overspending (过度花费) on guzi may lead to problems and a lack (缺乏) of focus on studies or work. If your friend Kevin is a super fan of guzi, what advice would you give

How much do you know about the Silk Road It is a historically important international trade route between China and the Mediter-ranean (地中海). It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2,000 years.

Before在……之前、After在……
be popular with是固定搭配,意为“受……
use sth. for sth. in在……里、with和……

36.Buying goods. 37.The guzi economy may reach 308.9 billion yuan by 2029. 38.For young people, guzi helps them feel good and make new friends. For Chinese businesses, guzi draws young shoppers to physical stores. 39.I would advise Kevin to make a budget first. He should decide how much money he can spend on guzi each month and stick to it to avoid overspending. Also, he needs to make a study-play schedule. For example, he can finish his study tasks first and then spend a fixed amount of time, like one hour a day, on guzi-related activities.
36.文章第二段明确说明:“In Chinese, the word originally means ‘grain’, but here it refers to products related to ACGN”并且提到“When people buy these products, we say they are ‘eating grains’”,所以“吃谷子”在这里指购买周边商品,而不是吃真正的谷物。
37.文章最后一段提到:“By 2029, it may reach 308.9 billion yuan.”
38.第三段说明了年轻人的原因“First, these things help them feel good…Second, many young people feel lonely these days. They want to make new friends. Guzi culture helps them a lot.”;第四段说明了商业方面的原因“But now, guzi draws young shoppers to physical stores.”,对于年轻人来说,谷子可以帮助他们感觉良好,结交新朋友,对于中国企业来说,谷子吸引了年轻购物者到实体店购物。

While AI tools like Deepseek provide instant answers, reading still plays an important role in our growth.
