Do you know Li Kui, Lin Chong, Song Jiang These are brave men from the novel Outlaws of the Marsh (《水浒传》). Every Spring Festival, they “come out” of the book and dance in the street. This is Yingge dance.

Do you know how well your country speaks English China’s English proficiency ranks (排名) 40th, according to a report from Swedish education company Education First (EF). China rose seven places from last year.
The company tested more than 2.3 million adults in 100 non-English-speaking countries and regions (地区). China scored 53.44 out of 100 points. For the first time, Chinese people’s English has reached a moderate level (中等水平) compared to other non-English-speaking countries.
People with this English level can read foreign literary (文学的) works and science articles in English. They can also express their views and discuss academic issues (学术问题) with others in English correctly, according to China’s Standards of English Language Ability, which was released by the Ministry of Education last year.
Among all non-English-speaking countries, adults from the Netherlands were the best English speakers with a score of 70.27. The country with the lowest score is Libya at 40.87.
There are a few reasons for China’s rise in the rankings, said Jesper Knutell, executive vice-president of EF. Chinese people have a strong desire (渴望) to see and understand the world, which pushes them to study English.
Also, they spend large amounts of time and money studying English in the long term (长期). Last year, 300 million people in China were learning English, according to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The market was worth as much as 500 billion yuan.
