The first time I went to Germany with my boyfriend, I was very young and hadn't been to many places. As soon as we arrived, I had this incredible revelation.“I know all about this area The food, the language. I know all about the Schwarzwald, the Black Forest,”I said to his German family.“How do you know about this ” they asked, in disbelief.
That was the first time it dawned on me how much I knew about the rest of the world, and how prepared I was for it, just from growing up in New York City —— that I had been everywhere before I'd ever actually gone anywhere.
I grew up in the Chelsea Projects, 288 10th Avenue at 26th Street. A lot of kids there were first generation Americans with immigrant parents who were still speaking Yiddish or Chinese orPortuguese, or just name a language, and they were speaking it. You ate every imaginable food from the rest of the world there. You were exposed to all different kinds of traditions.
It wasn't just that. The whole city was a classroom. All over town, you learned stuff you didn't even know you were learning. You didn't have to be rich to learn it, either. My mom was a teacher —— a great Head Start teacher —— and she made sure I partook of everything New York had to offer people who didn't have any money, because she knew it was the greatest education in the world.
We went to all the museums, which were free back then. We'd ride the bus to Lincoln Center, before it was Lincoln Center, and watch dancers dancing there. Or we'd take the train to Coney Island. Those trips are among my fondest memories.
New York City played a big part in making me who I am. It's where I learned that I could pursue whatever I loved, but that I couldn't be a slacker(偷懒的人). The city is everything you' ve heard it is. It's crazy, it's horrible, it's magnificent, it's beautiful. It's a real live wire, hard to leave.

In an oasis of green space sandwiched among Manhattan skyscrapers, one oddball stood out among the parkgoers Monday morning. It was a robot mower (割草机) named“Belawncé.”Looking like an oversize Roomba with heavy-duty wheels, it pilots itself with the help of an artificial intelligence camera system that resembles a pair of human eyes. After two to four hours of mowing, the robot navigates to a charging station.
For the past few months, the electric robot mower has taken over grass-clipping duties on the main lawn of Bryant Park, a small but heavily used public park. Toshi Yano, director of the park, said in an interview that the robot mower has proved effective, safe and more environmentally friendly than gas-powered, human-operated mowers.
Belawncé is a glimpse at the promise and the problems of using robots for tasks such as yard work. Bryant Park previously tried a couple of other robot mowers that were finicky. The prior robots would get stuck in certain parts of the park. To connect to satellites for navigation, at times the park needed one receiver on-site and another on a nearby office tower. Starting this spring, Bryant Park picked a model made by a company called Sunseeker. It has required less human intervention over time.
Unlike its pop star namesake, Belawncé and its fellow robot mowers aren't beloved by all.Nanci Fioravanti, landscape manager for Green-Wood, a popular green space in Brooklyn that uses two robot mowers, has had to reassure staff worried about job losses from automation.Fioravanti also said that the robot mowers aren't suited to steep areas of Green-Wood or where tree cover makes them lose signal.
Park officials made sure Belawncé navigated around or stopped for humans and wildlife.“Either the birds or the AI or some combination of both are doing what they' re supposed to do and avoiding one another,” Yano said.
28. What is a key feature of Belawncé
A. It is gas-powered. B. It looks human-like.
C. It is uniquely shaped. D. It operates autonomously.

A. Their adaptability. B. Their limitations.
C. Their environmental value. D. Their maintenance costs.
31. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To promote the use of robot mowers.
B. To call for a review of robot mowers.
C. To report on the adoption of a robot mower.
D. To present the development of a robot mower.

For some readers, a dictionary opens up a world. Dictionaries contain multiple pleasures, such as settling word-game wars by turning actual pages. For the rest, a dictionary is either outdated or strictly online. In 2012, Encyclopaedia Britannica stopped printing new editions, going digital-only.
In his book, Unabridged: The Thrill of(and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary, American journalist Stefan Fatsis writes of the shift brought about by our decade-old dependence on search engines:“Definitions, good and bad, were a click away, and most people didn't care or couldn't tell which was which: expert research, scraped data, zombie (僵尸) websites, whatever popped up in a search.”
When I was a child, I loved dictionaries, and so did every sensible parent in Calcutta. If your child was literate, one of the 20 volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary or an illustratedCollins was the surest way to keep them happily occupied, setting them off on hunts for lost or forgotten words.
Fatsis sees dictionary-making as“a human endeavor(努力) stretching back to the third millennium BCE”. From the Akkadians to Sanskrit scholars, what dictionary makers hoped to do went far beyond the already tricky task of writing definitions: their job was to explain and track“the endless shifts in language”.
Change is inevitable, though Fatsis also asks what we lose in the name of convenience. He writes, “the job of the dictionary was firmly established… By the time I finished this book, it wasn't clear how much longer flesh-bone-and-blood lexicographers would be needed to document the march of the English language. Between traditional search engines and AI-enhanced search through LLMs (large language models), the way we look up words, and find meaning in language itself, has changed.”
We can't claim that humanity still needs physical dictionaries. Like encyclopedias and atlases, the best of them have long moved online. Indeed, the starting point of most search engines were the encyclopedias and dictionaries compiled (编纂) by experts. But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries —— such priceless time capsules, one of the last paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content.
32. What has reduced people's reliance on physical dictionaries
A. The decline of the print media.
B. The convenience of online lookup.
C. People's indifference to accuracy.
D. Publishers' insistence on going digital.
33. What can we infer about the future of real-life lexicographers
A. Their workload will double.
B. They will remain in demand.
C. Their existence is threatened.
D. They need to upgrade their skills.
34. Why does the author stick to physical dictionaries
A. They boost long- term memory.
B. They last longer than digital files.
C. They offer an escape from screens.
D. They give more authoritative definitions.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Word in Favor of Dictionaries
B. My Love for Looking up Words
C. A Best- seller on the Theme of Change
D.. Human Endeavors in Dictionary- making

She reached a day earlier to settle into the guest house before her parents arrived. As she sat by the window, sipping her coffee and watching the mountains, the caretaker of the guest house arrived, worried. “Ma’ am, there's been heavy snowfall in all parts of the state. So, the flights to Himachal have been canceled. It's going to be difficult for anyone to get through for the next few days,” he said.
Siya's heart sank. She quickly grabbed her phone to call her mother when a message arrived:“Dear kiddo, our flight got cancelled because of the snow. We' re stuck here for five more days. Stay safe, and we' ll be there as soon as we can.”
“Well, what now ” Siya muttered to herself, feeling disappointed. “I was looking forward to seeing them. What will I do alone for so long !”
The next day, Siya spent her time at the guest house all by herself. The snow continued to fall heavily and the roads remained blocked. It was peaceful yet lonely. She spent her time reading books and watching snowflakes but felt downhearted about how her holiday had begun.
Then, on the second day, as she was lying on the couch of the living room, she heard a soft sound, like a tiny cry. She froze for a moment, wondering if her mind was playing tricks on her.She stood up and followed the sound to the porch (门廊).
